@@PuertoRican88 plus a lot of Sony TVs and Blu-Ray players also had the XMB.
By default, it shows live TV, but since there was no cable/antenna connected to it, it just shows static.

I recently received my PSX DESR-7700 from Japan, and it's beautiful! and i loved it so much i had to get another one, so i bought the PSX DESR-5700! Now i have both the latest PSX's in my PlayStation collection
Those two models 5700 and 7700 can support a PSP usb connection.

@@mizzymedia Your very lucky to get those two. I have a fully functional 5500 version since the other ones I checked out are not functional so its very tricky to find one fully functional.

Indeed, it is rare after all. They are pricey to get but it's something to collect along with the other PlayStation consoles.

Now that is a Holy Grail for a PlayStation girl !! Don't have one, I've got my PS2 modded with a Mars Pro GM 816HD, which opens up the whole world literally for the PS1 & 2 and also allows it to play any region DVD's. I also saw somewhere that the external hard drive takes a huge load off of the PSX's internal hardware. Thanks Reece for the totally awesome early Christmas gift for Gemma. And Gemma and her loyal fans, have a Safe and Happy Holiday season, Game On !!!

I have a similar problem with my PSX DVR, I assume it's just age. Great that you got a working model! My PSX DVR is just an expensive door stop-wont even boot games via FreeMC.
Like you say they break super easily and the HDD is locked to the console so it's difficult to do too much with them, but nice as a museum type piece!
I wouldn't recommend modding it if you know what your doing. I have a working one that reads the games and DVDs with no mods needed.

It’s cool that you have a working unit as these have a VERY high failure rate. It also wasn’t made by the the computer entertainment division of Sony and was made by their consumer electronics division and was marketed at such rather than at gamers.

Yea some have a software failure basically not booting up, while a few or some are still functional out there to get.
Some updated info for 2023: you still can't fix units with dead hard drives, but fixel's IDE emulator may offer a way to bring them back to life.
The more common failure is a dead DVDR laser that leads to the laser that reads games to never spin up. Makes the system a paperweight. You can find replacement lasers online.
If you get one of these that works, remove the drive and back it up using HDD Raw Copy. If the drive ever dies, you can use Fixel's emulator to get the system running once it's available.

Awesome prezzy and well deserved. I think I remember channels showing after the PSX so it’s probably expecting one. I’m not sure but I think you can bypass it.
Update**
I can’t take credit for this or confirm if it works but try the below to avoid the static:
PSX:
1. From the XMB go to 設定[settings] > テレビの設定[tv settings] > 自動チャンネル設定[automatic channel configuration] and choose 実行する[initiate]
2. Wait for the system to search for available channels (approx. 2-3 mins.)... no channels are found and the テレビの設定[tv settings] menu is displayed again
3. Choose テレビ[tv function] from the XMB and you will see that LINE is automatically set
3. Go to 設定[settings] > テレビの設定[tv settings] > ミュート設定[mute setting] and select する[enable] to avoid flicker on the LINE channel

That's exactly what it is. You can mute it in the settings
If you haven’t already….pick up Gunner’s Heaven 😎. It’s kinda the sequel to Gunstar Heroes. I just ordered one of these myself. No original controller, but it does come with remote and component cables.
You can see where they got this inspiration for the menu wallpaper and icons for the PS3 onwards

That's awesome, I've seen some in a game store over here back in the day though I didn't know they where Japanese exclusive. The systems that the store had where in multiple colours, Blue and Red if my memory serves me right. Awesome gift by Reese, such a love within the gaming community to gift this to you.
Those are extremely rare and cost top dollar, 1000's of dollans
Sorry to say, but Japanese sell 95% of their goods in next to new condition (so you would expect the PSX to be near mint). The difference in condition between my Japanese Super Famicom collection vs Western SNES releases is testament to this (If I have a scuffed corner on my super famicom game boxes i'm already disappointed). I'm so happy that your first Japanese import experience is one to remember. This is why I buy NTSC products, just look at that artwork on those games in your video. Its just up another level compared to anything in PAL land. What your experiencing in this video gives me goose bumps and shivers too. So happy for you.

I'd hazard a guess that boot up is trying to find a tuning frequency on the DVR side of things, the column its in when it boots up looks like the DVR side of it. Remember when you had a really old console and you had to tune it in with the antenna cable? Its like that. If so, the only way its going to not do that is if you somehow tune into a Japanese TV station lol.
9:42 the static happens because it’s booting into a TV turner mode, and is looking for a signal. Surely there’s a way to make it boot into game mode so that doesn’t happen upon boot up!
You can just mute it in the settings

Can I ask what’s the model of your Bravia screen ?
Why you see the white lacking screen is because it was meant to turn on analog tv but when theres no analog stations thats why it shows white lacking screen
You can softmod this same was as a ps2 to preserve its life span it also makes it region free
Not exactly region free via softmod. You can use FMCB to bypass most region protection but Mechapwned is better these days

Yes the XMB menu on the PSX is the first and original to get that which the PSP and the PS3 adopted that to continue on along with other Sony products until they phased out the XMB menu in the early 2010s. So to that end yes it acted as a concept and or prototype to the upcoming Sony products using XMB.

@@TheGebs24 I am sorry Gemma but I had a certain magazine that had you on the front cover and you it said you were a left handed player(WOTP) and I have watched a match you were in which was very enjoyable and I am still into the sport that you loved so very much and I have most of the equipment but the shoes had to be dumped as the side part of the shoes had ripped somehow but I am still looking for a item called THE AUTOMATIC which would allow me to play a shot called the power Ball, and I have almost had the perfect game which was all strikes except for the end zone which was a right bummer.

It's not rare at all they sold thousands of these in Japan. They sell them as JUNK on Japanese auction sites.
To other countries whoever owns it, its considered ultra rare. While in Japan its common to find them in their market.
