Pen tool is the wholly grail for Art and Design on Illustrator. It's tricky when you first start using it, but once you get the hang of it, it is a huge help.
It's like he's using Freehand from the gracious, sophisticated lines he gets. :-)

to draw over the image you just need to lock the image layer to make the fill disappear you need to click on the x below the fill oprion that is if i understood your question.

I don't understand how to do detailings once the color is filled?
Because in order to take reference from original image I have to hide the layer but then pen tool doesn't work on it.

I love this! How you traced the shadows and made the image so complete with them. Only thing that really bothers me is the gradient on the ear, so different from how you made the other shadows, and it doesn't belong to the "flat" illustration, or is this just me?

try to do them in chunks rather then single strands! also try using brush tool if you want individual lashes and adjust ur brush accordingly :) hope this helps if u need kore elaborating i can try

hmmm, it's at least 1 and a half hour of work you've just watched in 13 and a half minute.. Just as easy like that.
The real time it was about 30 minutes. so if you want to watch in real time just change the speed to 0.5

But if you already export them into Jpg, png, or bitmap format. So it will be raster

In shadows and shadings, I've found that less is more.
This is beautiful work. Of course the pen work is wonderful, but your attention to detail in making it "less" flat is what makes this work so beautifully.
This may be a dumb question, but how do you hide the fill like you did at 5:45? Is that something to do with the layers and the live paint tool?
It's wireframe mode, you can press CTRL+Y to switch the mode

Asking for why the pen tool not the curvature one ,is coz i wanted to know if there was a better approach of this work of illustration using pen over curvature , knowing that the last is faster and smoother on curves and would take less time fixing pathes and such , so why did he choose the pen tool over that ...
As for my second question , ur also right , but knowing the bar of an expert helps me as a new comer to set money value on my work , so i don't undermine or ecxagorate my fees

Hi, How do you make the lines and shapes just go into black lines so you can still see the image behind? I know this is not outline mode otherwise you would loose the image using cmd Y. Thanks love the work and gradients look great.
ctrl + click the eye icon on the layer you want to see as wireframe

make sure that you are using Adobe Illustrator, not Adobe Photoshop
I wish you would slow this down. Your end result is amazing, but its impossible to follow at that speed. Not really a good "how to".
