I cant believe they forced Alvin into the studio after he slammed his girlfriend with that fatal overdose. They shoved him into the record label's car just as they shoved her stretcher into the ambulance. This recording perfectly captured the guilt he was trapped with inside the mic booth. Dying quietly, soul internally bleeding. Not knowing by the time he laid this track down, she would be dead, and he would have to lay her down too.
" Depression is a faceless disorder ". Watching Alvin seemingly content while playing with his mates can fool anyone unaware of what the band, and especially Alvin were going through at the time. May these recordings live forever in our hearts, as Alvin does.
I remember right at the end of their last show in 91 (the one where Alvin just walked off the front door) you could see Theodore looking at him with a sometimes melancolic but mostly annoyed stare. This was sadly a foreshadowing of Alvin's eventual suicide by overdose from a cocktail of booze, opiates pills and mescaline. This was at the peak of both Alvin's poly addiction and Simon's notorious use of Heroin. After they broke up they all did some other stuff like Theodore's solo albums or Simon's painting, as well as playing with Flipper on a couple shows. But they never seemed to forget the passing of their friend and brother. Rip Alvin
His "suicide" was in a microwave. But how do you close and activate a microwave from the inside? We do not know. We think that he was murdered. The only thing we know is that Simon was there. He found the blood splatter. The time when he did was 00:07. Theodore had nothing to do with it however. He kept on getting higher and higher. He passed out 22:58. The only one who was missing during all of this was David.
It's crazy how many people at the time of this concert was so unaware of the problems underlying each cast member.. How sad that we only really knew what was going on after Alvin's faytle overdoes.. May he rest in peace..
My dad and I were a huge fan of the band when it was still together. My dad in fact was in the crowd during this performance. I didn't really listen to their work until the late 90s early 2000s but I did once witness Alvin almost hitting me with a stereo just because he "didn't like the sound of the other chipmunks".
I was at this show the pit was brutal Alvin ended up throwing an empty glass bottle at some girl hit her right between the eyes and nearly killed her he left in a cop car and Theodore and Simon just jammed for 20 more minutes and let the audience sing... Thank you for posting this it brings back some good memories
My step dad use to work with them on stage. Idk his exact job but he was a stage hand with them and even the chipettes. He told me about how in the 80s they were the best. Always so cheerful and full of life. He said the downfall started in 91 when simon walked in on alvin and jeanette in bed together. Broke his heart and his mind he said. Even worse when she gave birth to a boy that wasn't his. That's when the drug use and alcohol really took control of simon. He just couldn't stop. jeanette said in an interview that simon would walk in the apartment drunk some nights and beat her and they kid senseless. (My dad told me that eventually the kid moved in with theodore to get away from his dad.) Although i think we all know about what happened next. With simons suicide murder of his brother alvin back in 96. It was after that my dad got out of the stage hand gig and became a trucker. Says it still traumatized him till this day.
Also Simons murder on Alvin was really intense and very violent (he was found with 1 organ taken out, also hanged which of course why it’s called the suicide murder) but he managed to get the police before he was killed and Simon was found and arrested soon after Edit: Simon also hanged himself in his jail cell 6 months later
Jessie's girl takes on a brutal new meaning when you consider "he's holding her in his arms late late at night." Is literally a guy using dismembered arms to hold her down.
I actually saw them open for Hanatarash at the infamous bulldozer show back in ‘85. I’ll never forget the moment when Alvin strapped the chainsaw to his arm and started chasing the audience members around, I barely escaped with my life. one of their best performances imo
Man, so many late nights spent listening to this track, I had never seen the video until today. Alvin's overdoses, Theodore's miscarriage, Simon's depression, the signs are all there. Such talented artists, you wouldn't ever have been able to tell they were in such pain by listening to their voices, but you watch videos like this, and it's just real. The pain is all there. This shit is just like when you watch Chuck E. Cheese perform as an adult I stg.
At least Theodore was able to settle down his Elenor and their pups later in life. Saw a zoom interview in 2019. Looks the happiest he's even been since the attempt on his life.
And of course this was recorded not long after Alvin’s infamous attempt to steal Chuck E. Cheese’s girlfriend. And the brutal falling out between the two that ended in a fistfight in a Denny’s parking lot in Buffalo. Chuck then filed a restraining order. Of course, it’s long been speculated that “Jesse’s Girl” is actually “Chuck E.’s Girl”
I'd never got the chance to see these guys in action, but my dad went to one of their houston circuit shows in the later years. I reckon if Alvin didn't insist on performance based songs that limited the bands process, they might have kept it together longer than their burnout. The whole sonics of the band changed when they opted for simpler songs instead of using their talent for more articulate pieces of music. My dad said the audience could tell this dumbing down was in their material, and back then when an audience disliked something they'd attack full throttle. My dad didn't think they deserved it, especially since theyd gone thru so much shit that no person in that audience could relate to.
They were supposed to make some money off this gig. But, while they were on-stage performing, Dave was on the phone with a bookie making some bad bets. They ended the show in deeper debt than they started without even realizing, because Dave controlled the books. Wasn't until a couple of years later when a collector broke Dave's legs to send him a message that he decided to give up gambling. But, that was after the 'munks were already over. I hear Dave is retired, and a youth pastor now trying to atone for his past misdeeds. But, I don't think the remaining 'munks ever forgave him for what he did once they found out.
I remember when Alvin walked out of the front door. Simon and Theodore continues until the End. I remember how they invited people to the stage. But i was lucky to get on.
I used to watch this video on mtv way back when. I was a kid back then, wondering why they played this video on the news and then stopped the mtv screening. Now i know that "Alvin" is a true monster and not a charismatic singer. My hearts and condolences go out to the poor people who lost their lives in the 1993 Burger King Shooting. Alvin, if your reading this in hell, I hope the seats hot enough for you. 😊
I was a roadie for this tour. If anyone ever met Skunky Don, that was me. Alvin would go weeks unable to shit due to his crippling addiction. We would delay shows for hours while Al tried to squeeze one out. Shit was dark. Litterally. I remember eating cereal one afternoon with a spoon that was burnt almost entirely black because there were no other options and thinking, "If I don't get off this tour, I'm going to watch somebody die". I started on the Turtles Coming out of their Shells tour when after they coheadlined a festival in Wichita with us and never looked back. Damn talented, but Alvin and the boys had their demons for sure. I got a lot of stories from that tour!
Puberty hit the boys hard. This performance along with Alvin's refusal to participate in a crucial part in the song "We Are the World" written specifically for him by Michael Jackson; paired with an onstage meltdown at the 1986 American Music Awards led to the Seville boys' downward spiral. This was the beginning of the end... ...Or was it? More BEHIND THE MUSIC next on VH1!
Didn't theodore had a fight with Alvin because the squirrel suit was choking him and he just tightened it up in response. I think he collapsed backstage if TMZ is saying the truth.
The day Simon found out he was HIV positive was the most animated he'd been in years. He went from being a heroin addled couch potato to a being of pure rage, tearing the recording studio to pieces around him. He kept screaming "I ain't no queen, Alvin! I ain't no fucking queen!" In hindsight it's almost hysterical how he was more concerned with people thinking he was gay than the knowledge that he'd be dead in less than a year. He spread the virus to at least six other women in the following months when they went backstage as groupies. The other Chipmunks are just as responsible for that as he is. Never once did they speak up, they never even tried to make Simon put a rubber on. They just looked the other way.
During this performance, Simon was livid that Alvin refused to play his guitar because he was too drunk to do so. Because of this, they had a backup guitarist on stage playing his parts. After the song, they closed the curtains, and Simon dragged him back stage, beat him up, and yelled at him to get back on stage and play his guitar or he would make sure he "suffers".
I cant believe some of the stuff Alvin did. I remember seeing photos of Alvins girlfriend sitting in that alley way motionless while everyone walked by. I believed theodore suffered the most the album was pushed back because theodore was in the ER hooked on pain killers. No one knew how to wait back then and i think they lost a couple of fans who didnt know the story. Alvin was depressed when he killed himself in that microwave. Ill never forget when the news came out
actually no, it's just an au or arg or I don't know, all of this is fake, the sludgefest album is just a playlist of slowed down music, the incidents were just made up.

The fandom and mythos surrounding this is just as enjoyable as the actual music.
i wasn't prepared to hear "Jessie's got himself a squirrel",
Watching a dead eyed Alvin say "Shes' lovein him with that body" is not something I expected.
