@@maxigol1977 I hoped it meant that they'd have to get more creative with how they scare the public. But seeing as many horror movies lately are still relying on jumpscares....yeah.
Also, what scares people in a specific society changes through time. In the 60s and 70s, films like Rosemary's Baby or The Exorcist exploited the whole Satanism craze, and it WAS scary. Now, it's cheesy and overdone. But if someone decided to make a horror film about, I dont know, school shootings, or nuclear war, or racial/homophobic hate crimes, now THAT would be scary!

It's a stupid comment because hes trying to downplay what Linda Blair had to go through while making this movie they used industrial refrigeration units to make that Room cold so you could see her breath when they would start shooting in the morning it would be as cold as negative 40 in there . So trying to make it seem as though she did nothing because they had someone else record all the demon voice dialog. Which by the way Was another amazing actress who I heard was just chain smoking to make her voice sound that way she was really dedicated to what she did.
But still hes trying to downplay what Linda did in this movie.
and what she did was extremely tough on her.
And she did play the demon she didn't voice it she had to do everything we saw on screen all the dialog the scariest parts.
And another fun fact she as Well as other cast members have talked about On numerous occasion's.
She (Linda) was going through puberty at the time,
and Breast were growing in and she was starting to look too old for the role so they would painfully wrap her chest to smash her breast down to make her look younger Mike And if you seen men the Blair's other work and her other various photo shoots She is quite the buxom woman it's a weird to talk About as far as this role goes because she was 12 through 14 while shooting it but it she just the reality she went through hell she had to sit through make up she had to sit in a freezing cold Room literally negative 20 to 40゚F she had to have her chest and wrapped up extremely tight so her breast wouldn't show it was a horrible uncomfortable experience for her and she did a fucking fantastic job.
And this no profile picture having probably fake name having Hiding behind anonymity coward is sitting here shiting on the incredibly hard work a 12 to 14 year old girl had to do those scenes where she's getting jerked back-and-forth in the bed those were actually her they had a rope on her back Fucking ripping her back and then pushing her forward.
And this person who's likely done nothing And I'm talking nothing other than read drink eat and criticize. Just has to let their opinion be known to try to diminish the amazing job a young girl did in what is in my opinion the most Terrifying movie of all time, And this dipshit just has to try to downplay her achievements to feel better about themselves. That's why it's a Fucking Stupid Comment.

Even if you were to present this movie to someone who gets scared easily and is in their teens or 20s... this movie won't really bother them like it would someone in the 70s.

Me and my sister said we wanted to watch a scary movie and my aunt went to rent the fucking exorcist to show a 5 and 7 year old. Needless to say I was fucking terrified and couldn’t even get out of my bed in the morning frozen still with fear for about 10 minutes what seemed like forever thinking the girl was right there around the corner from my door. Eventually I got the courage to run passed the demon door and hit a powerful left to jump down half the stairs and leap off the rest of them to the first floor where my mom, ain’t and grandma were waiting at the dinner table drinking coffee. I played it off like I was all good but wondered where my sister was. She always woke up before me so not seeing her down there, I instantly assumed that she was frozen with fear in her bed avoiding the demon by her door also. Was in the shitter tho.

I would argue that, despite MANY great horror movies being released since The Exorcist, it remains the scariest horror movie yet made.
Unlike most horror movies, especially this past couple decades, its fear comes from the genuinely disturbing material...rather than the infamous "jump scares". Ironically, if I'm remembering correctly, the only "jump scares" in the movie were unrelated to the possession (EX: the phone suddenly ringing while Father Damian is intently listening to his recordings of Reagan).
If The Exorcist had been made today, I guarantee there would be some stupid scene where all the lights go out, and demon-Reagan pops out to attack the priests, and that kind of thing. There's just not a lot of subtlety in modern horror.

I would amend your comment to say that films since The Exorcist have TRIED to be scarier. Remember that this was made back in 1973. The Vietnam War wouldn't officially end until 1975 and its horrors were still being played out on TVs on a daily basis. America was embroiled in undoubtedly the biggest culture war it's ever seen that helped to bring down a president. And the Catholic Church was regarded as the only spiritual safety net for a large part of the population.
Many more erudite critics of The Exorcist have justly praised this film, so I can't really add to that part of the conversation. For myself, though, I will say that this is the "closest" to what might regarded as real supernatural evil as you'll likely ever see. You buy into the world of Iraq and Georgetown 100%. The people chosen inhabit real lives. Even the names are believable, powerful, and "earthly" - Lancaster Merrin, Damien Karras, Regan McNeil, Burke Dennings, William Kinderman. These don't sound fabricated, but could be your neighbor, someone in law enforcement, or even a person of prominence within the Catholic hierarchy.
And Pazuzu himself is a "real" demon that people both feared and worshipped and has a long and frightful history. As much as I love Alien, this isn't a fanciful xenomorph. Nor is it a killer shark or a guy in a William Shatner mask, but something that COULD exist in a supernatural realm. The actors and filmmakers took the source material seriously and with enormous respect. It isn't played for laughs or cheap effects thrills. It's a story of elemental good versus evil in the political heart of the U.S. And it has transcended time to still be regarded as one of the most heart-pounding films ever produced.

    • @GMDark
      @GMDark 5 лет назад +5

Yes, Pazuzu is also the name of the demon who Professor Farnsworth owned and put through college. Pazuzu escaped and due to Farnsworth's senility he could not be found. However it is later revealed that he was hiding on a wing of the Planet Express ship and when Farnsworth was drowning in the Fountain of Aging, Pazuzu saved him and in reward Farnsworth granted him freedom. Pazuzu moved to Paris and had a son to whom he told his story of freedom.
He is apparently bound to grant the Professor three wishes, though the reason is unknown. The wishes do not seem to be supernatural in nature, as he has only been shown to rescue the Professor from two desperate situations.

Absolutely love that movie!! It was at least twenty yrs old when I first saw it, and it really holds up. I think the bits of comedy help horror/creature films to age well. Since the special effects will inevitably age with the movie, keeping a sense of humor just changes the tone of the whole movie over time (to each generation of audiences) instead of just really dating it. American werewolf in London is a great example of just the right tone.
Re Animator and Dead Alive (released as Brain Dead in some countries) are two of my favorites that also age well, in part because they were so comedy based to begin with. Not as scary, but still great.
(Obviously American werewolf in London has one of the most famous special effects scenes lf all time, that is still gross and graphic today, so I'm definitely NOT shitting on its special effects.)

About your confusion on the veneration of Pazuzu, it's good to consider that before the zoroastrian introduction to a divine battle between good and evil, most deities like Pazuzu were seen as neutral, but potentially dangerous, forces of evil. For example the head of the Gorgon was a popular amulet against thieves in ancient Greece and South Italy.
I do however wonder where you got the notion from that Hanbu be the King of the underworld. I couldn't find that for myself

"The Exorcist" is actually a composite derived from the Earling, Iowa possession & exorcism of Emma Schmidt (aka Anna Ecklund) in 1928 (and many years beyond), the Maryland/St Louis possession and exorcism of Ronald Hunkeler in 1949, and the circa late 1950s-early 1960s possession and exorcism of an unidentified woman in rural Italy that formed the basis of the 1963 Italian film "Il Demonio" which features the original "spider walk" echoed ten years later in The Exorcist.

His uncle was a Melkite Archbishop. The Melkite Church is one of the 25 Churches [the Roman Church is the largest] that makeup the Catholic Communion of Churches. I put him in contact with his Grace Eparch [Bishop] Nicholas [Samra] who is now the Eparch of Newton, which is the Melkite Eparchy [Diocese] here in the United States.
We talked about how as Lebanese Christians we had heard about Pazuzu from our sitdos [grandmothers] and the horrors he would bring to people who did not follow a Godly path.
The reason that he emailed me was that I was very active on the net educating folks about Eastern Christians from the Middle East.

There are NO "far scarier films that have been made since" The Exorcist. That's pretty much a fact. Also, Pazuzu was known as a demon of the wind and there are many references to this fact which ppl don't pick up on; the sounds of loud wind gusts in the attic as Chris MacNeil checks on her sleeping daughter at the beginning of the film, the wind that blows out Chris's candle in the attic, the flying objects in Regan's room just prior to the crucifix mutilation scene and the billowing curtains during the exorcism scene.

Didn't scare me, but bored me and then made me laugh when she kept telling her mom to "fuck me. Fuck me!" and "Lick me, lick me!!!!" some weird shit to the priest. Not at all scary or terrifying.

The Thing is a serious contender honestly. Different kind of fear but fear nonetheless.

Between 4:44 and 4 :46 there is a brief flash of a face on the hood of the exhaust over the stove , mid screen to the right.
I just caught that . It reminded me of fight club when Brad was explaining images cut into films that people barely notice lol.

Stay Humble and focused. Banishing and being feared by a presence like that would build a reputation. Which is inherently not bad. But if your Ego is built up to the degree of Pshh. I beat him before! You're showing your weakness.

Poltergeist is more of a cartoon thrill-ride.

Would it be ok if you add updates to this video featuring the new Exorcist tv series? I really want to know how everything rolls into one timeline

This was rented for me for a sleepover in the 6th grade. I had never heard of the movie nor knew a single thing about it. Let’s just say I was terrified to even see a clip of the movie for the next 20+ years! Thanks mom!
