Wow...you made me go look in my old drafting tool box. Yes I have an eraser shield!!! I forgot how handy it was. I was a detail draftsman right after college. I used the eraser shield on Mylar and vellum with koh-I-noor technical pens and an electric eraser. I worked as aTechnical illustrator on the board until I switched to CAD. I have LEROY lettering set....use in the 40’s thru the 70’s. Look it up ... really cool system used by draftsman and engineers to have consistent letter for engineering drawings. I have Braddock Rowe Lettering triangles that quickly set up your lettering guide lines. You might find them handy for your calligraphy layouts.
Whoa! I love all the things you can do with an eraser shield! When you erased your pencil marks within the dot holes on the shield, and, then revealed perfect dots on the 'A', my mind was blown! I totally need that tool!
I have 2 or 3 of these. One of my watercolor/calligraphy instructors showed us how to use the 3 small slots, to make tiny guidelines, for greetings, on our watercolor Christmas cards. We use one of those 3 slots for our tiny greetings, in Roman capitals, near the bottom of the front of our watercolor cards. Thanks for all the other tips too!
Thank you for all the tips! I actually own one, but I had no idea what it was for, so I was just using it as a straight edge. The wierd tool I always try to keep on hand is my ruler that helps me center stuff. It’s marked from the middle, rather than the edges.
Back in the 60s and earlier, when all documents were typed, this tool was to my knowledge (although your use would make sense also) for correcting typing errors. You would select appropriately for the letter, number, punctuation mark or even phrase that was to be erased (or in later days painted over with liquid paper) and the guide let you exercise the degree of control you describe in your video. Like you, I have also used it as a stencil, and it truly is surprisingly multi purpose for an abundance of things. I've had a green plastic one for decades, that appears & disappears sporadically in my home, and although I haven't used it in ages, I always know (when it turns up) it should remain a keeper item. Thanks for reminding me to go look for it.
I finally bought it yesterday. The cashier didn’t know what it was and I was able to explain what it could be used. So excited to use it. Thanks again for the tutorial 😊
Oh, and then you could use that eraser marker that you found out of Germany with this. Thinking of the dots on a letter that you have already done in either pen/brush pen. Need to get that eraser stuff from Germany and this tool. Thank you!!
I can’t believe that I pulled out my eraser shield for the first time today. I was trying to sketch a snowy scene, but wasn’t sure how to lighten the paper to suggest snow on tree branches. I immediately thought of the eraser shield even though I’d never used it before. It met my needs. Thank you for more ideas.
I don't think this is much of a surprise, but I always keep a Blackwing on me. My other two favorites are the Ames lettering guide and the Wescott 6 inch clear ruler. The Ames lettering guide is a bit more difficult to use, but its still great for guidelines. The Wescott ruler has a protractor in the middle of it so you can also use it to make any degree line and you can see through it (make lining stuff up even easier). Both are just a couple bucks on Amazon
I have had that lovely little thing in my pencil case or a few years because it came free with a set I bought. I used it for a majority of things you have shown today, but I never knew that's what it was actually made for. Thanks for clearing up what it is. :)

I have a flexible curve (basically a bendable ruler) that is 18" long and maybe 1/2" wide, plastic outside and must be some kind of metal inside. Anyway you can create curves to trace with it. Less than $10 (I actually got it as a prize in school for something I can't remember), very compact, super useful.
It is much easier to use with a BIC stick eraser (it's white and comes in a case like a pen that you can advance the eraser as it gets used). You can flatten the tip by holding it perpendicular and erasing until it is flat. The edge then fits in the opening to the eraser shield.
Ok, so not a keep in your pencil case tool...but I find my rotary cutter, mat and rulers super useful. I have been a quilter for ~20 years and it was a natural thing. I have one rotary cutter with an older blade specifically for paper. This lets me cut paper neatly and accurately to whatever size I need. I can also buy the full sheets which is more economical
I have one that I occasionally use, but never thought of the many uses for it. Thanks for the tips! Apparently, I have not used it often enough because I have no idea where it is! 🤪

You can find eraser shields anywhere-in the school supply aisle of your local store, in your craft store(usually in the drawing area), on art supply sites, Amazon, etc. And the eraser looks like a white hi-polymer eraser (also known as a vinyl eraser). Pentel makes a good one, Faber Castel has a good one, and so does Stadtler(it’s usually called the Mars Plastic eraser), but any white eraser should do well on graphite, no matter the brand.
French Curves are also used in drafting, in H/S we had a choice between French and Flexi-curves and the French Curves always produced the cleanest curves
That looks cool, but doesn't it chew up your eraser? I keep buttons in my pencil case for when I need to make perfect small circles. I have cleaned off a small oval deodorant cover to trace for ovals. But the thing I like most is a small punch that makes perfectly rounded corners on cards. It was originally sold by a scrapbooking company to be used with photos.
I've looked at these before, but I've wondered how they don't turn into cheese graters for your eraser when you erase over them - don't the sides of the little shapes chew up your eraser, or are they beveled and are so small we can't see them?

Just buy one from your local big box store (like Walmart or target) or you can find them in craft stores, usually in the drawing aisle. They are only a few dollars, $10 is overpriced even in Canadian dollars.

My Dad was an Architect. He gave me mh first eraser tool. I learned many things about lettering from him. My love for calligraphy for one.....

In my art box I have a good sharpener. After buying many sharpeners I bought the Prisma pencil sharpener and it is worth the price.
