If watched Swiss speak about X a million times. But never once have I heard Swiss talk about X like drag on did. So glad I heard this story. Can’t wait for the full interview.
DMX was a perfect balance of Lyricism and Straightforwardness He didn’t need colorful metaphors and quadruple entendre’s to make you feel the lyrics There are “super lyrical” rappers who say a whole lot of nothing
The funny part is that those “super lyrical” rappers who say nothing aren’t really all that lyrical. People seem to be more impressed with the fact that the metaphors, punchlines, etc. exist than they are about the actual quality of the rhymes themselves or how they’re delivered.
This what I'm saying just cause you said some hot lines you still ain't saying shit lol X says something in 1000 years from now they will not go back and find poetry from Jay-Z they will find it from DMX because X words will live forever he has dozens of songs straight jewels and knowledge real life shit you just don't get that kind of music these days like that
I dont think "simplicity" is the right word, even tho i get what u mean. I think WHAT you sayin or talkin about (aka content) is the point. Pac wasnt lyrical myrical but can alot of the lyrical myrical mcs make Brendas Got A Baby? Or X's Slippin?
@@MaadAzzGang right, that's my point tho. Their content or subject matter was complex but their lyrics were easy to digest...definitely Smokey Robinson of hip hop
That is True. Kiss was way more Lyrical then DMX from Day 1(even in 96) but example 24 Hours to Live DMX's energy was too perfect for that song. Even on Niggaz Done Started Somethin X ended that so perfect
Don’t get it twisted, X definitely had bars. The whole point is that bars alone ain’t gonna cut it. You could argue that there were more rappers who were more “lyrical” than X when time he came out, but no one was a more compelling performer or was able to connect with the audience like he did at the time. It was just raw, unfiltered energy and emotion that only DMX could have delivered.
This is why in a straight up diss track battle X would get dog walked on. X had great energy for off the top free styling but if you put him in a room with lyrical giants and told all of them to write some shit and rap X wouldn’t stand a chance. If I had to give an example Kendrick Lamar would annihilate him, that boy KDot is an alien. But if it was just off the top free styling X would get him coz I haven’t heard anything about Kendrick being able to freestyle. Being able to freestyle off the top is a goddamn gift the only ones I could think of that could beat X in that is Lil Wayne
@@KvngLxo I’m sure he does. I could see that since I heard his early demos, where he was clearly influenced by Rakim. Honestly, I’m not as into multisyllabic rhyme schemes, wordplay, metaphors, etc as some people are. I always like it when I hear it, but I think DMX’s more direct approach is what really made him stand out more. Plus, I would still hear those qualities sprinkled throughout his album cuts too. It just seems to flow more naturally and make more sense musically than having the “technical” aspect of writing being his main focus.
Exactly. Those in the comments you are saying “X def had bars” aren’t getting what he’s saying. NO ONE has ever said DMX wasn’t lyrical, but more than anything he was about passion. Without that passion and the ability to deliver via cadence, X woulda been one of the other millions of rappers who only can put words together. Hell you can be TOO lyrical: a lotta people love Em but DEF has moments where he OVER rhymes and sounds elementary. X was like PAC. He could give you a super deep song, a story telling song or a turn up song, but yet in all those songs he’s gives you the emotion, so that when you’re reciting the lyrics it’s like the lyrics are YOUR VERY OWN words, not just a entertainment thing. “Heard he ran up on this nigga he thought was me and starting tripping, now you know I ain’t even with that, so he gone have to get just of GP, trying to creep me?, yeah that nigga sleepy”
Always like Drag since back in the day. How can we support him now by buying his albums where the publishing goes to him. You know he’s not getting anything from streams of his old material.
Man when he did the impersonations, it brought a smile to my face. He sounded exactly like him, cadence and all, that I was able to picture DMX saying them
X was lyrical himself when he needed to be listen to his spellbound songs, jams, tunes, freestyles, acapellas, ciphers, and examples as well as his rhyming prayers
I agree and I'm a big DMX fan!!! In his freestyles and his demo songs from the early to mid 90s DMX style was different he was actually spittin and was lyrical!!! I was shocked when I heard his early records, dude could actually rap, In my opinion he dumbed down a lot of his lyrics. People should go back and listen to his demo songs
