    Placement of EQ control can be considered either a pre-selected focusing control or a post-selected one. An overdrive pedal has, also, within it some measure of EQ change. It may be argued that EQ identifies the character of sound. That, I believe, is the driving (or attracting) force which compels one to continue the search for pedals.

    Teaching cannot force you to learn. Learning must draw you in. Then teaching cannot hold back "your learning". Learning is transformed into indoctrination by the force with which applied. Information is transformed into learning commensurate with the "draw" offered. The relationship must be, and kept, alive to continue the benefit.

    Yes! Truth can not be accessed through avenues of thought narrowed by human intellect but must be received from the top. Mankind cannot climb up to break in but, must be welcomed and received on the terms of the Creator. Asking other humans to instruct is like prisoners conferring with each other. The result is not freedom but only a more informed prisoner.

    Hello, Been viewing videos on mixers, went absent, while the videos moved on, came back and your video was playing.
    Lo and behold vintage amplifiers for guitars. Coincidently I possessed two head units decades ago 50 years ago that were unique and amazing but I cannot get a Google hit on their history or even existence. May I ask if you have ever heard of the name: Whitehall.
    These two head units were fairly large about 12-14" tall and about 24-26" long 10" deep, They had a polished chrome metal face, one feature that was interesting was across the top of the upper beveled face were large round yellow plastic lights for each feature, such as reverb or "fuzz".
    When you struck a string the light for a turned-on feature would glow very bright and then slowly fade just as the effect would fade.
    Thought I would ask for a bit of luck.

    I'm going to push back a little on Mick's choice of Squire Strat and Two Rock, over his '61 and a cheapo transistor -- *because* getting another guitar like the '61 is a rare thing, while it's quite easy to (eventually) find a decent amp at a reasonable price. So long term, I think your wrong Mick :) (but very short term you're right). Thanks a lot for all the great content guys, I've loved your show ever since I started watching in maybe 2016 or so! The interaction and respect you two have for each other, plus the obvious enthusiasm makes this channel something special!

    I've tried and given up close mic-ing the cab(s) and now simply capture the room from a central point. This is working well, for now, but when I add vocals I'll have two sound sources added. I have no isolation booth because I want an more organic "capture". My room is too small for a sound level which would, perhaps, help control the non amplified vocal. I believe I'll need to set up in the living room but, WHEN? I feel a growing urge to find a way to create a larger studio environment. Ideally this would be sized as a small club venue. O.K., I need a club. Maybe I could build and lease a club with a small stage and record there afternoons. This "hobby" is threatening to grow into something much larger.

    Re: Jeff Buckley - I'm pretty sure he got his higher-gain tones from the Trem-O-Verb version of the Dual Rectifier, both live and in the studio, and his cleaner sounds were either a Vibrolux (as on GRACE) or a Vibroverb (which he rented for the LIVE AT SIN-É stuff). Mick, I think you said you've used a Trem-O-Verb? I've done enough research now to know that I like the newer and lower-wattage versions of the Recto best, but of the earlier ones, I thought the TOV was by far the most versatile and least scooped/metal. Great cleans and tremolo, though the high-gain modes are still kind of fizzly and boomy for me at all but very high volume.

I now prefer two 10" amps to that single 12" one and so run all three at once - wet (in stereo) either side of the 12". I run a guitar through an ABY switch with ISO and Phase control through a pedal board (with 4 cable system to the 12") and stereo effects through the 10". Too much to carry but, haven't found anything that sounds better.

    When it comes to the same old chords, we all live the same old chords humans have been living since the beginning. We all fall in and out of love, we all lose loved ones, we all have things we strive for, things we fail at, we all sleep, eat, poop. None of it's new, but it's individual to every one of us. That's my two pennies.

    Dear Mick, I am curious to know what you would like to learn in terms of music theory. I ask because I feel like just “learning theory” is too abstract of a thing. Maybe you want to know why certain chords work together, or maybe you want to sound like Charlie Christian (in terms of note choices not tone). Those are very specific things that may require a bit of theory to learn but I think having a specific goal may provide you with a better “entryway” than any book you may find out there! I have learned this the hard way. Only when I started realizing what I wanted to learn (it was bebop phrasing for me), things started to fall into place and I found a learning direction.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  Год назад +1

      I definitely don’t want to sound like anybody, it’s not that. And I already know why chords work together, kind of. What I’d like is to improve on is my chord knowledge and how that leads to understanding how melody fits. If you watch the Tim Lerch show when it comes out, it’ll add some context to the statement that I’m at cave man level in my playing and Tim is just about as evolved as humans can get. Now, neither of those things are necessarily better or worse, but while I have no real desire to get to the full-on chord-melody jazz improv stuff, I wouldn’t mind at least being comfortable with some changes; you know being able to handle some proper changes and not be so fazed by it. I had to pull out of a gig recently because I just couldn’t handle it musically. I’m not sad about it, it is what it is, but I think some work on the basics will at least help me play more. Cheers!

    • @GiovanniBottaMuteWinter
      @GiovanniBottaMuteWinter Год назад +1

      @@ThatPedalShow Gotcha. I think your playing is great as is and I can tell you have really good musical intuition. If I can give you some unsolicited advice (which you can totally ignore), I would find a couple songs that are at the edge of your understanding of chord changes and work on those changes. Not too easy nor too hard, just enough to push the boundaries of your knowledge a bit further. I feel like that's the most effective way to challenge yourself while not losing motivation. If you had to play those live it would be even better... Good luck, it's a life long journey! :)

      Hello Mike, Mick here. I’m no physio but I would think that improving general fitness and flexibility will help - simple stretches or maybe even Pilates or yoga. Tai chi… Y’know, any of the ‘gentler’ approaches to suppleness and movement will help in so many ways.
      More prosaically, try a simple warm up routine that focuses on breathing a little bit too. Chances are you’re carrying quite a bit of tension and that’s going to take its toll because your body will be under way more stress when you’re tense.
      Drink plenty of water and eat well in the days leading up to the gig. Finally, try lighter strings, put the guitar up one strap notch and……. Breathe! Good luck man.

    Hi Gents. Just catching up. Got to the Ed Sheeran lawsuit. It's interesting how the discussions all seem to focus on the second aspect of the US legal standard. Fair enough, since that makes perfect sense. The first half is to do with whether the underlying composition is itself unique and innovative enough to protect. The jury receives the law in the form of jury instructions (both orally and in hard copy for their deliberations) and usually, a jury is instructed to answer one question first (e.g. was there negligence) before entertaining at all the second question (e.g. apportioning fault). Sometimes we get to know, based on how they return the verdict forms, what they decided and how far they got. Not always. (I'm much more familiar with how it works in the criminal context) Anyway, the Sheeran jury may have evaluated the earlier piece and decided it didn't qualify for protection. Sound odd? Why is it okay to write yet another 12 bar blues without fear of being sued? Which previous 12 bar blues could complain that theirs was a protectable advance from those previous to it? Anyway, Sheeran is right that other profit motivated complainants will ever be in the wings, which is a separate and very significant bother. Cheers

    Mick you seem unhappy man. I think you need a break or something. I was looking back at your vids from several years ago and you seemed so at ease and like you were having a good time. Now it seems like you're just not enjoying yourself bro. I hope I'm wrong but take care of yourself and remember... don't sweat the petty things, pet the sweaty things.

      Thank you. I’m not always happy, but I am at peace after many years of unconscious mind shit. But part of you is right, at the moment it’s all work and zero play. And that gets a bit old, even when you get to work here!

      More… I think it’s an indication that there’s still a lot of brain work to be done. Whatever you do, there are three modes of being: acceptance, enjoyment and enthusiasm. If you’re not in one of those states in //any// thing you are doing - if there is non acceptance, judgement or resistance - you need to stop doing it because you are suffering. Can’t stop doing it? Then your perspective needs to change and you need to get to a point of acceptance at the bare minimum. I’m saying this because it’s a lesson and revision for me. Thank you.

      @That Pedal Show I'm glad you have perspective. It's sound and logical reasoning for sure. You guys sure do a good job at what you do. I hope you continue to find that enthusiasm and purpose. Nobody is happy all the time man. I have to evaluate my behavior pretty regularly to not let my pessimism drag my wife down. But I do find that music, guitar, cool pedals, watching you guys do your show, and taking time to enjoy all those things helps my mindset. I hope you find your "zen" or some version of it.
      By the way, your playing is an absolute inspiration. Thanks for that, and for taking the time out of what I'm sure is a busy life, to share that with all of us that follow what you do.

      @@SK-yi8cf Apologies if you have been asked this before, but have you tried disconnecting the tone pot from the neck pickup? Some folks find they can fix the mud that way. If not, I hear nothing but great things about the Twisted Tele set. I'm partial to Blackguard-style pickups, but there are tons of good options.

      Lollar 50’s Tele pickups are really good. They came stock in my Nash Black Tele. My personal favorite are the Cavalier Nashville Lion King pickups on my Blonde Tele. They are way more mid-range. Twisted Tele pickups are also good.

      Indeed, but with every respect to him, he never made a fantastic living of it. Vis a vis the conversation, we were talking about popularity and despite his undeniable genius, he was anything but popular in any wider sense. Probably makes the point harder than most, may he rest in peace.

      @@ThatPedalShow yes that’s a fair point, still, takes some doing to create a whole new voice on the instrument and possibly 100% cliche free, which ultimately was probably his undoing in achieving anything remotely considered popular. I guess that’s why those of us who liked him, liked him. He did manage to get on a level 42 album 😆🙏

    worrying about what sequences or melodies you have heard before in other songs, really sucks the joy out of music. They're a means to convey an emotion, it only gets boring when it doesn't do that.

    Dan and Mick, I love you both and I love your show, but... it drives me mental when one of you plays the guitar when the other is talking or reading comments. And it's even worse when the guitar isn't even connected to an amplifier. 😬
