Step by Step was still on that day, and I know this show from the September 24, 1993 episode's commercials that aired between SBS and "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper"
ABC's TGIF lineup for Friday March 14, 1997. 8pm - Family Matters (new episode: Odd Man In) 8:30pm - Boy Meets World (repeat: Janitor Dad) 9pm - Sabrina, The Teenage Witch (repeat: Third Aunt From the Sun) 9:30pm - Step By Step (new episode: Road Trip) 10pm - 20/20
+Avery Merrick Blame CBS for that by trying to "compete" with ABC by stealing Family Matters and Step By Step, the two best shows remaining. Teen Angel and You Wish just weren't nearly as good (it says a lot when "lesser" earlier shows like Going Places and Baby Talk are superior in quality.
+pannoni 8 It was made worse when CBS had already tried in 1992 with a couple dying sitcoms (Major Dad/Designing Women) and the now obscure Golden Palace and Bob. Nowadays, Fridays are a joke on TV thanks to Hollywood Hype and heading out on the town.
pannoni 8 In early 1997, CBS picked up Family Matters and Step by Step in a $40 million deal to acquire the rights to the programs from ABC.[5] ABC then promised to pay Miller-Boyett Productions $1.5 million per episode for a ninth and tenth season of Family Matters. However, tensions had risen between Miller-Boyett Productions and ABC's corporate parent, The Walt Disney Company (which had bought the network in 1995 as part of its merger with ABC's then-parent Capital Cities/ABC, Inc.). Miller-Boyett thought that it would not be a big player on ABC after the network's recent purchase by Disney. In turn, Miller-Boyett Productions agreed to a $40 million offer from CBS for a 22-episode season for both Family Matters and Step By Step. CBS scheduled Family Matters along with Step By Step as a part of its new Friday lineup branded as the CBS Block Party and scheduled the family-oriented block against ABC's TGIF lineup, where the two series originated. Near the end of the ninth season, the cast was informed that a tenth and final season was planned, so scripts and plot synopses were written for the show. Ultimately, due to poor ratings, CBS cancelled Family Matters (as well as Step By Step) after one season, along with the rest of the "Block Party" lineup. CBS also pulled the show from its regular schedule in the winter. As a result, the series finale was broadcast with little fanfare during "burn off" summer TV time in 1998
One of its shows at the time, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, moved to the WB in 2000, which was basically the final nail in the coffin for TGIF. The WB basically was "TGIF 2.0" in the early to mid '00s, even if ABC had an actual TGIF 2.0 from 2003-05.
ABC's TGIF block (1989-2000) began to die in the fall of 1997: stemming from a combination of aging sitcoms like Family Matters and Step by Step moving to CBS (who started - and ended - their own family-friendly Friday night sitcom line-up in 1997-98 called "The Block Party"), the oversaturation of supernatural/magic type shows (Sabrina the Teenage Witch and new series You Wish and Teen Angel, the latter of which both lasted only one season), the failure of Two of a Kind (which was the last sitcom produced by the previously reliable Miller-Boyett group) starring the Olsen twins the following year. Ultimately, the ending of Boy Meets World after seven seasons and Sabrina, The Teenage Witch moving to The WB after the 1999-2000 season. ABC would bring back the TGIF brand for the 2003-05 & 2018-19 seasons, *but it never met the same success it had before.*
The Miller-Boyett Group has found great success with the Emmy nominated "Full House 2: Fuller House" on Netfix from 2016 until 2020 for five successful seasons and 75 episodes.
Whenever you see me posting these blocks of commercials, I specifically mention the programs these were taking from. Except for some movies (you'll find those on home video anyways), I have the episodes of all of the shows that I've post, in full or partial form. Some aren't present on my channel since they are either available from another user or have a proper DVD/streaming release.

The 90s seem so innocent in retrospect.
i miss TGIF when it was like this, too.

+pannoni 8 I would rather CBS pick it up rather than it just end like that
Once Step by Step left...it fell off. Olson twins had a show which was the sign of the end lol

25 years ago today…
TGIF should've moved to The WB.

Well, well, well...if that isn't the most excellent breakdown of TGIF's gradual decline I've ever read!!! 😃👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Liar Liar was so hokey pokey and predictable. They need to do a modern day version but with darker adult themes and humor.
Do you have the episodes of the these shows too, along with the commercials? Love your uploads, such nostalgia!! :)

TGIF returns to ABC, beginning October 5, 2018.
