  • So I went and bought myself a screen used Dalek from Doctor Who. This isn't something that happens everyday, so here's a breakdown of my crazy adventure so far! (Possibly featuring Matt Smith...)

      I never liked them. Probably never will, I like them even less than I used to nowadays.
      But I guess someone has to like them, lol. And besides, a real Dr. WHO prop, from the time when it wasn't completely awful yet, is pretty neat regardless.

    It's mad that you not only have a full-size Dalek...but a DOCTOR WHO SCREEN-USED Dalek...Incredible.
    Not only that, but you got THE RED one...THE BEST one!
    Is it possible that this was a stunt body, or that the arms and head could have been put onto a lighter stunt body that maybe went through some kind of death scene?
    You could most definitely either
    1) take a silicone mould of one of the bumps, and cast it in resin
    2) vacuum form over an existing pump and create a plastic shell. You could attach that to your Dalek, or fill it with a plastic/foam to make it sturdier.

    • @SomeBoiOnline
      @SomeBoiOnline  6 месяцев назад +1

      It is indeed mad, I loved Matt Smith's invested interest in which colour dalek I'd gotten. "The red one? Nice!" 😂
      I know it wasn't used for any stunts in the show as there was never any such scene, but it is a complete mystery as to where the top half went.
      I'm leaning towards production members just stripping the parts for keepsakes. Can't imagine that happening for the whole top half though. Thanks for the advice!

    You certainly got one of the better ones mate. Quite a few of those paradigm props were prom stage show props and some where made for exhibition only. Those ones never were seen on screen.
    There were a couple of actual screen used props and you did get one! Great condition too! I did tons of research for a guy who only wanted a real screen one. The battered supreme, your skirt, half the full eternal and the red cross one were all screen used. He got the battered supreme.
    Very cool.

    • @SomeBoiOnline
      @SomeBoiOnline  6 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, I was over the moon to have a screen used one, despite the live Strategist prop, for example, being more complete.
      That's fantastic, when you say "battered Supreme" do you mean the one from Victory that's all dirtied up? I noticed someone else online has the Supreme from Asylum, which is cleaner but still missing parts. It would be great to be put in contact with any of the prop owners, if possible!

    • @lepterfirefall
      @lepterfirefall 6 месяцев назад +1

      @SomeBoiOnline yeah. The white battered supreme in the auction was the original victory supreme and used in pandorica opens. This was also used in wedding of river song at the start, all battered up and then went on to be used in asylum. I am in contact with the buyer. He was overjoyed to win it. Other daleks looked in better condition but his supreme has the most provenance (used in 4 stories). The best condition props were actually used in the dr who proms stage show. Very cool but not screen used (outside of iplayer I guess). You could tell by the strip of curtain material under the bumper to hide the operators feet on stage! The almost complete good condition supreme sold was a prom dalek.
      You got a fantastic prop there. It was made specifically for asylum. You could go to this planet earth for the rest of your dalek.
      Interesting fact...the burned paradigm skirt in the propstore auction was actually the blue original skirt that was turned to stone in big bang. All burned up but so cool to know what it originally was.
      I love this stuff. I'm a small scale prop collector myself but you got a beautiful item there.
      There are some great FB groups for collectors. I'm sure you would be able to make contact there...

      The dislike came from the overall size and the fact that the spine changed the silhouette of the Dalek too much. I got in touch with Peter McKinstry at the time (he deisgned them) to geive some positive feedback as I though us fans were getting a bit over the top about the dislike. He told me that his original design was closer to the shape of the 60s Daleks but the builider had changed things to make the production of the props easier. He very kindly shared a couple of his design with me and his ideas were wonderful. I encouraged him to join the Project Dalek Forum and share his stuff there - which he did as much as he could. This was all years ago when the NP Daleks were still fresh and Smith was still the Doctor. I believe there is a set of free plans on PDF that show the way these Daleks were meant to look. I haven't been a member of PDF for a few years now as I finished building my Dalek and got into furniture building instead. Good times though meeting some good people and raising some money for charity along the way. My Dalek: www.projectdalek.co.uk/mainsite/index.php/dalek-showcase/jon-place

    The back hatch on The Paradigm was actually meant to store weapons, they would lift out of the back and spin around to the front via that little groove on the "shoulders". I think theres concept art of it somehere but I don't think they ever showed it directly in the show.

    I didn't stumble on this until just now, despite being familiar with your work for a couple days now and taking that time to mull over your history of the Paradigm one. And of COURSE you'd get the RED one. You know by now why that makes my eyebrows go up.
    Either way, congratulations on this, big time. This is even more special than having an antique car, because these props, of this quality (regardless of missing parts), are RARE and only a few, if even more than one, are made - and basically none are left. You're officially Mr. Paradigm! Always cherish it, and never let your love of the design diminish.

    I'd definitely take a bunch of measurements and photos for the dalek builders club! I prefer the bronze NSD, but any sort of Dalek is fascinating to see. From the look of the back of your Dalek, it seems like stuff was definitely removed after it was built. Restoring everything (especially the top half) seems like a big task, but manageable with time. Definitely keep that chipped paint area!

It’s a shame they didn’t use them after asylum considering they’d lost the hump that most people didn’t like and the new metallic colours was much better. Regarding 3D printing (unless you're already familiar) what you want specifically is a filament printer that's fairly large. They're a bit of an investment, but they're the ones people use for cosplay props and armour, so you'll probably be able to get someone to do it for you. That'll help you replace a lot of missing bits.

    I didnt mind the Paradigm Daleks all that much, I was willing to give them a shot. The voices were intimidating and I liked the spikey eye stalk. The problem is that during the Matt smith run they never got any proper spotlight episodes to flesh them out. Thats been the main problem with Daleks since the end of the Tennent era, Daleks have not been treated like the unstoppable force with cunning intellect that they were meant to be. They could have been a nice set up to see gradually revive the Dalek Empire without devolving into your typical (must invade Earth of all planets and get destroyed) kind of way like we've seen so often. Have them conquering worlds only to be driven off, or succeeding because wouldnt that be a change. Show how good they are by them winning a time or two, rebuilding the Dalek Empire based on the rolls they were designed with. The Supreme acting as the hidden puppet master, Strategist at his side and commanding from the van, have the Scientist and the Eternal breeding a new generation of purebred Daleks, as for the Drone I think its a misplaced unit. It should have been another command unit (make blue Fleet Commander and red a Ground Commander) Show them rebuilding the Empire then launching campaigns across the universe, no one episode and done shenanigan's like with the new cyberman episode with Clara, they needed to be a threat that grew, not just magically have rebuilt the Empire offscreen.
    The Paradigm Daleks had potential, its just a shame the writers wasted it all. They had the potential to be a new shining part of the story, but it was botched by the lacking foresight of the writers and directors that plague the show today.

    Hi, I actually own the prop shown at 6:59. It pre-dates any available fan build guides and through careful research is actually more accurate than both the currently available plans and the official ‘this planet earth’ daleks. If you look at a TPE paradigm you’ll see that the skirt is too cinched at the top - that’s the main way you can tell that the incorrect dimensions have been used.

    • @SomeBoiOnline
      @SomeBoiOnline  6 месяцев назад

      Wow, that's great! It was the first Paradigm replica I remember seeing online and always admired it when I was younger.
      It does seem very hard to get the shape of the Paradigm right, from the photo I can see his base is more angular and think I heard somewhere he's even bigger than the original props?
      I always wanted a TPE replica as a kid, but can now see they're not as perfect as I once thought!

    • @SeaDevilLagoon
      @SeaDevilLagoon 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@SomeBoiOnline the whole thing is slightly too large - that's right! the other thing is the angles in the fender, though I quite like it as it makes it easy to identify in old convention photos (it used to do con circuits with sons of skaro). It's currently being refurbished by Steve Allen into a metallic paradigm in the asylum style - I think it's the best they ever looked - and has a brand new eye, built from scratch. it's certainly an imposing thing. it's great to see a screen used prop in good hands!

    Perhaps with the restoration you could potentially add small modifications so you can sit inside and control it from inside with a RC controller, and insert small cameras in places where you can't really tell if there's a camera to give you a better view outside while sitting inside it, and on the inside you have 7" mounted panel display so you can see your surroundings through those cameras because your visibility will be almost nonexistent when sitting inside with the top on when you want to ride around in it.

      This would be a great idea for a Dalek replica, but with this being an original prop, I'd like to restore it as faithfully as possible. Which means good old-fashioned wheels and a small hole in the front to see out of!

    I have a theory where the Daleks neck rings may have gone because in a video talking about the designing of the smith/Capaldi tardis they said they used the paradigm dalek neck rings for the roundels so I’m thinking they took the neck rings off the dalek because it wasn’t in use and put it on the tardis

    • @SomeBoiOnline

    To be honest, I'm pretty shocked with the Propstore set-up. On their website and in their catalogues, they say how everything is stored in secure, controlled environments... a barn, in my opinion, does not meet that description! And I would have been really angry when I saw it dumped outside like that!

    • @SomeBoiOnline
      @SomeBoiOnline  6 месяцев назад +1

      I should add that the barn was more of a front, likely to not draw any attention to the building. Once you went inside it was very secure. There was also a much larger and contemporary facility that stored the bulk of the props adjacent to it.
