  • At long last, our promised footage compilation is now available for everyone to watch! Take a ride on Miami's legacy Metrorail Budd-built trains during their final days in passenger service.
These rapid transit cars, officially known as the Budd "Universal Transit Vehicle" (UTV) were Miami's original Metrorail fleet since the system first opened in 1984 since day one. 136 units were built and served for 30+ years until the current Hitachi fleet began service in 2017, slowly replacing the fleet until April 2020 when service levels were reduced and the Budd sets only ran on weekends in place of Hitachi sets that were still being worked on.
These trains never recieved a rebuild or overhaul their entire life, however plans were in place throughout the years for a retrofit, even one proposal in the late 90's to have the fleet rebuilt with a slanted front end inspired by other Budd fleets and the R40-slant subway cars in NYC. None of these plans came into fruition and the Miami Budd fleet remained authentic for their entire lifetime. After 2010 it was decided that the entire Budd fleet would be replaced with new trains altogether due to increasing challenges to keep the Budds going as with the Budd company out of business, spare parts became hard to obtain which created maintenance difficulties and a challenge to keep most of the fleet in everyday passenger service.
The final regular passenger service trip occured in the middle of July 2020. Another unexpected pop-up in service trip occured sometime in October 2020 for one run, and since then they have not served in regular passenger service.
Various units still remain on property. Although all units that remain are out of service for various issues, mostly mechanical, they still stick around and can be seen in Okeechobee yard or a few sets that are currently viewable just past the Dadeland South station along the tail tracks - which have recently become quite an "art" display however are being closely watched by detectives to prevent any further vandalism. (If there's such a concern to protect these cars, why not just save them already?)
Wish you could still take a ride? There's some good news for you, as these exact Budd UTV trains are still running in everyday service in Baltimore's Metro system! Although the Baltimore fleet was rebuilt by Alstom in 2005 and runs much smoother and cleaner versus the never-rebuilt and screechy authentic fleet of Miami, they are still an experience and much fun to ride and also retain their original DC current traction motors, an experience that is worth having in person!
Soon altogether the Budd Universal Transit Vehicle will be just a memory with only our experiences to share!
This entire video compilation was recorded during weekends in June 2020 with a Canon R800 Camcorder - please excuse the quality of some shots as I was still learning how to use this camera in that time (didn't know of manual focus until the month after, fortunately just in time for the final months in service of the legacy R32s (STAY TUNED!)

As of May 2023 all Budd trainsets have been removed off of Miami Dade Transit Property to scrap. There are no pairs anywhere in the system anymore, even the sets at Dadeland South are gone. Long Live the Miami Budds. Fortunately it seems Baltimore's sister fleet has some time left as their replacements haven't even begun production yet.

I remember when those Budd trains were new and nice! After only 36 years they have become totally decrepit? They certainly do sound dilapidated in the vid! Contrast with the MBTA which is still running 50+ year old Silverbirds on its Red Line and Baltimore still has their Budd cars. I guess it comes down to maintenance and timely refurbishment doesn't it?

MDT really dropped the ball on the Budd Fleet. Had they maintained them better they could have still been around for at least 5 to 10 more years.
