- In recognition of Native American Heritage Month, this video highlights the wartime experiences of two Native Americans. Donald Parish, a Navy Corpsman in Vietnam, was born on the Indian Reservation now known as the Bay Mills Indian Community, in Michigan. He is a member of the Ojibwa (Chippewa) Tribe. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart Medals for his selfless actions as a Navy Corpsman serving with Marines in Quang Tri Province in March 1968. Melvin "Mel" Sheldon, a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, is the grandson of a member of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe and his father was from the Tulalip tribes in Washington State. The irony was not lost on him that he flew OH-6 "Cayuse" helicopters as a scout in Vietnam with the U.S. Army's 9th Cavalry Regiment. He used the call sign "Red-Cloud." During his tour in Vietnam he flew "hunter killer" missions in III Corps and into Cambodia while Lam Son 719 was ongoing. He was awarded the Air Medal with "V" for his heroism.
Never go any medals any acknowledgement except at home on the Reservation, they took me from my wheel chair and danced with me holding me, I cried.

some questions for you from a young sioux
They are the true Americans
I had the good fortune to work with Mel Sheldon. He represents himself and the Tribe extremely well. A very nice vid.
This is my Uncle Walty!
One of the BEST videos EVER made. As a United States Army veteran it really tugs on the heart strings. And Big Thank You both of them for their service and sacrifices.
The true American Warriors. 🙏
This is not the first time I’ve heard of the whiskey bribe... oh bless my dad, I thought it was a hazy memory.. 9th! 💕
I read from a medical journal that fewer veterans of native American descent suffered from PTSD due to them being celebrated by their communities when they came home. Now I understand a little bit better what it really meant by hearing this.
Yeah it had to help having your culture celebrate warriors, also a very interesting statistic is the % of Native Americans who Volunteered rather than being drafted. True Hard Men
Praying we will get our chance on the world stage with grandchildren bearing our service to great grandchildren pray for me too 🙏🏼
True American HEROS !!

God Bless You.....
I served in the 82nd and was taken to US Special Forces by some berets saying you belong to us, I was very good in SF so I was sent to MAC v SOG I blended into the jungle because it as home for me and the Monteyards were like family, then I was sent to a secretive CIA Mag Sog where we were always being lines we chased and killed anyone that was in command and then into other countries. I was 17 years old and made 18 in Cahn Rahn Bay. I was always "chief", chief go see what's out there. It was enough, I lost left leg, left arm, side of face and chest, was homeless for 8 years. VA with family screaming at them replaced leg in 2004 and fixed arm in 2013 and head but still hard to eat and speak. Cannot dance anymore sure miss it. Still try to dance at powwow in Arizona
Don't give up brother get out therr.
