    i think when most ppl refer to Scream in terms of plot twists they are referring to the fact that there were TWO killers... not that billy loomis was one of them. i remember how shocked i was the first time to find out there were 2! might be my personal favorite plot twist of all time

    • @Quiffanairy
      @Quiffanairy Год назад +38

      I totally agree with this but I would say the even bigger plat twist in Scream is the intro when Drew Barry more's character is killed off - it may be very much part of the Scream franchise formula now but nobody saw that coming when the film first came out. She's even right upfront on the movie poster.

      i would honestly argue that billy was a plot twist? the whole movie we’re suspecting him! sidney suspects him! when we see him stabbed in the bedroom at stu’s house, it’s a fake out because now we the audience are supposed to think “omg it actually wasn’t him we’ve been wrong all along!!” and then they get us again with the real reveal lol. so maybe it’s not that surprising since the fake out was so quick and towards the end, but on a first watch I think it successfully blew my mind 🥸

    As a "mentally ill" person, I believe it has a very important place in horror. There is little scarier than losing your mind. It is the idea that you can't even trust yourself to be a reliable narrator, taking away the last bit of control a protagonist would have.

    • @jessiesmyth1949
      @jessiesmyth1949 Год назад +11

      When it shows how horrifying mental illness is for the person experiencing it, it's great and very effective. I just don't like the 'mental illness makes you violent' tropes and the constantly inaccurate DID/MPD representations. It just happens too often in films and continues the negative stigmas of mental health.

    • @kitnal4143
      @kitnal4143 Год назад +1

      @Amanda K. alzheimer's isn't a mental illness, sure, but it follows the same idea of losing yourself/not being able to trust yourself- I fully agree.

    • @kitnal4143
      @kitnal4143 Год назад

      @Jessie Smyth DID in media is a very thin line, because half the time it feels like they aren't even purposefully using the illness (rather instead wanting the concept of multiple people inside a single "host" body, and the other half is when they actually try and use it but are unaware of how it actually works. DID is a trauma response, so I automatically find it weird when it is used in a horror because an "evil" alter that is a murder... just hadn't been documented and adds to the stigma?

    I agree with you about the abuse of mental health tropes in horror movies. the other thing that really annoys me as a mental health professional, is poorly done scenes that don't understand procedure in modern mental health facilities. Oddly I guessed the twist to Sutter Island when I saw the trailer. Becasue the unreliable narrator twist was so common around that time, I immediately guessed that. However it had two great mini twists in the movie that I LOVED. The bit where you see him pulling the gun from a nazi who's trying to kill themselves, early on seems like an act of mercy. However later in the movie it's revealed he wasn't being merciful, he didn't think they deserved a quick death after what he saw. And of course the very last line in the movie, implying that he's completely sane at the end, he's going to be lobotomized on purpose because he's so haunted by his past was a fantastic final twist.

Although I didn't know EXACTLY what the people behind the scenes were doing, we knew about them from the beginning and that everything happening to the other characters was intentional. I agree about identity. I remember everyone thinking the twist was unique but I just thought it cheated the audience. It’s almost like saying the whole thing was a dream.. but worse.
    I loved The Village. It’s one of M Nights most underrated but when I first saw the trailer I knew they were on modern times and I was fortunate enough to see this movie in the theaters. But I thought that the “twist” of it taking place in modern day was so obvious that it couldn’t be the real twist. There’s two other twists in this movie that are so subtle yet so powerful to the love story, that is the village.
    One of my favorite twists is one you didn’t mention and it’s insidious. What is the reasons why I like you because technically isn’t a twist it’s more of a theory. Which is, it’s not so much that Josh was finally possessed at the end of the movie but that he was already possessed from the start of the movie.

    I loved Secret Window when I watched it as a teenager, but at that time I had literally never seen that concept done in a movie before so the twist blew my mind 😆 If I rewatched it now I might dislike or even hate a lot of it. I will say, though, the very end of the movie is 1000x better than the end of the Stephen King story. Which is ironic since the entire story is about a writer who's obsessed with how important the ending of a story is and the ending of the story sucks. It's that whole Stephen King thing where he throws a ghost in at the end for no good reason. At least they didn't do that in the movie.

    A few of my favorites are, Insidious (I don't know if you would call it a plot twist 😅) but when you find out the dad was haunted I guess by the "women" in black. Dead Silence, God that movie gave me nightmares. And this isn't really a plot twist, but I really liked it, Annabelle Creation at the end when you find out the little girl is the woman who killed the woman in the first movie neighbors and them being her adoptive parents.

    I don’t like the “mental illness = violent killer” trope but I love shutter island! It was sooo good & definitely didn’t see that twist coming! Also liked identity, haven’t watched in years though. Hate Secret Window, glad most ppl do too. Scream was great because you didn’t that Billy & Stu killed Maureen. Billy def seemed like he was behind what was currently going on but to kill the mom & have all this extra planned out…I loved it! Love these lists!!!

    Us going in Okay M Night with twist being so predictable, and Shutter Island going to I'm tired were the only places that I strongly disagree with this tier list. I haven't seen some of these so I'll definitely watch them now. Thanks for this

    Ive had a crush on Johnny Depp since middle school, I'm 34 now. My mom took me for my birthday like 7th or 8th grade to the theater to see Secret Window. And I love it. Sooooo much. He is so unhinged in it.

    The Uninvited is one of the first horror movies I've ever watched, so not being used to any twists beforehand, it blew me away like crazy. I do really doubt that it would be able to trick me if I watched it a little later in my life, but it does hold a special place in my heart.
    Meanwhile US was quite predictable, but it was one of a bunch of theories that flew through my head while watching the movie. So confirmation bias kicks in once it's revealed what's actually going on.

    Decided why the heck not? I'll rank them with you. And they're in order within the tiers.
    Never watched Fractured, His House, or Time Crimes (need to fix this) so can't really comment.
    ~ Top Tier:
    -Sixth Sense, the re-watchability from the twist is amazing. Still my favorite of all time.
    -Cabin in the Woods, I knew the twist only because I had to hunt it down. Still absolutely saw it, and I don't think I would have seen it from a mile away.
    -Identity, didn't see it coming and it was incredibly clever. Its use of mental illness didn't bother me because I never saw it illustrated that way before.
    -Saw, didn't see it coming from a mile away. Super impactful, too.
    -Us, prenominal twists. Saw the first one coming, but didn't see the second one coming, though I feel like I should have.
    -Get Out, such a dark twist. I feel like this did well what You're Next failed at.
    ~ Second Tier:
    -Shutter Island, I haven't watched this movie often, but I do like how the twist changes the movie. I can definitely appreciate it.
    -Blackcoat's Daughter, it was a fun twist to a fun movie.
    -Friday the 13th, I love that there are still people these days who don't know the twist. It's pretty unexpected.
    -Orphan, I feel like I should have seen it coming and didn't. I'm impressed.
    -10 Cloverfield Lane, should never have been a Cloverfield movie. But either way, never would have seen that twist coming.
    ~ Third Tier:
    -Scream, saw it coming and still really enjoyed it. It's the movie that got me back into horror movies again.
    ~ Fourth Tier:
    -The Others, am I the only one who saw it coming? And I found it as slow as Secret Window and just couldn't get into it. Far better acting, but the twist itself just didn't do it for me.
    -Sleep Away Camp, I didn't see the twist, but didn't feel like it added anything at all to the movie.
    -You're Next, maybe it's because I watched Ready or Not first, but saw it coming and couldn't get into it.
    -The Boy, saw it coming and just couldn't get into the twist. I almost feel like the twist made it worse.
    -Goodnight Mommy, saw it coming and just not enjoyable to me.
    -The Uninvited, I swear Sixth Sense was the only one to really do this right, as far as I've seen.
    -The Visit, saw it coming and just couldn't get into it. Not sure what clued me in, but mreh.
    ~ Last Tier:
    -Secret Window, didn't see it coming but I was already so bored by then that I couldn't be bothered with it.
    -The Mist, didn't enjoy it, at all, and didn't really see it as a plot twist. Just depressing as all get-out.
    -Village is last. Saw it in theater. Saw both twists from a mile away and just kept rubbing me the wrong way the entire time I watched it.

    *Spoilers for Orphan & Orphan FK*
    The twist in Orphan First Kill surprised me more than Orphan.
    In the original we knew there was something off about Esther. Pretending to be a much younger girl to get what she wants was cruel.
    But in the prequel it seemed like we were just getting more Esther con-work and murder.
    Until the mother shoots the Detective and we find out the brother was involved, too.
    Whaaaatttt??!!!
    That seemed like something you'd see in a Scream film.
    I loved the back-and-forth between the three.

    True, the Saw franchise might not come to mind when you think of plot twists, but any true fan of the Saw movies expects good plot twists (Saw 5 anyone?).

    Three movies I've watched I would recommend for Part 2. SPELLBINDER (1988) (it might come across as typical 80s yuppie horror but the twist blew me away), ANGEL HEART (1987), and JACOB'S LADDER (1990).

    I loved Orphan’s plot twist so much. It was so good and shocking and that movie was amazing. And the Scream movies too with guessing who the killers are. Saw too. And 10 cloverfield lane is an incredible movie too. Same with Us and Get Out. I’ve noticed Nope isn’t here though, I liked that twist too. So many of these movies and twists are so good

    I like the Saw movies, and the reveal at the end of the first one was wholly unexpected. But was there actually a point to it? I remember one of the later films showing John putting himself in the room. But i don't remember if they ever explained what his presence added to the game.
