I rode in one of these everyday, rain or shine, exploration drilling for Platinum and platinum group metals in the Beartooth Mountains,MT. in 1980. Bozeman Helicopters owned it. A great ride. This thing was used for personnel and hauling the drill rig in pieces and all other supplies. I think the highest elevation we were at at one time was 8000 ft. This chopper had balls. Loud and powerful for sure.
I was a mechanic for Rocky Mountain Helicopters (Provo UT) in the 90's. I really enjoyed working on these Helo's watching them work. Most of the pilots I worked with were ex Vietnam pilots and were extremely talented. Could put the hook at the end of a 100' long line in your hand while you stood still on the ground. Had a ton of fun doing this work.
Personally I think the 315 Lama is the most beautiful helicopter ever made by the French. Love the open cowling on the turbine, also open fuselage on the rear section to the tail rotor. When I hit the lottery .......????
Thanks for sharing. Beautiful clip. Must have been a rare helicopter in the states. You have seen them in the 80ties on every airfield here in Switzerland. Loved the powerful sound and the talented pilots flying cargo for construction companies in the Swiss alps.
The Lama is like a Bell 47 but on "ROIDS" man. It was initially built by Aerospatiale (Eurocopter/Airbus Helicopters) for the Indian Army as an armed and unarmed scout chopper to patrol the mountainous border of Pakistan. But air services in Italy, Spain and Switzerland bought it because it could fly at very high and hot altitudes. A great performer in the mountains man!!!It is a gas guzzler though about 60 gallons of jet-a an hour and very expensive to maintain. Man, I'd love to fly one!!!!!
Flew in it a few times as my dad worked on it for 20 years. They provide support for heavy lifting as well they were more expensive then a long ranger believe it or not
@@oasisdo Actually it's name is "Lama" or SA-315B. The Alouette is a similar looking helicopter, but has a several different components, most notably the engine and a 2 bladed tail rotor.
Hey Ed this is one like this one in the Hangar right now that had the rotor blades attached and there the Helicopter A&P towed it outside and made sure the Rotor blades was balanced correctly
That's pretty cool that you got to fly in a Lama, I would love to fly in one and get it on my Flight list. I lucked out to even see this Lama, I just happened to be driving by at the right time :) Thank you for watching and for your comment.
no worries I remember the whine from the turbine drove the local dogs crazy. When I was older at 19, I worked as ground crew for a month on the Lama when we fertilised the forestry plantations with nitrogen. Hard work as we flew all day weather permitting from dawn until dusk. A great machine for working.
I like the Vid description.. You know your shit with this particular make and model.. Breath of fresh air compared to usually reading "Helicopter starts and takes off" A little bit more Info, this particular airframe, or the series of them., we're NOTORIOUS for ground resonance accidents. I think one was filmed on a TV show, can't remember which one, in the 80s. But the pilot took back off on time. It was all filmed and you can see it happen in the background.
Crazy I'm not getting any of my comments again, it never has worked very well, but not working at all anymore. I hope yours is working OK? Thanks for watching and take care :)
Thanks so much for posting this: I absolutely love the Lama. The whining sound reminds me of the Alouette III (same engine as the Lama) we had flying around here in my youth and that started a life long love for helicopters. It surprised me that the Lama in your vid carried passengers; I was under the impression that the Lama is on a restricted catagory now, not allowed to carry passengers anymore?
These are very rare in my area and they sold this one to another country, this Lama was flown by a very experienced pilot and passengers are the owners on the day of this flight. Thank you for watching 👍😎
Du point de vue visibilité et puissance complètée de la dextérité des pilotes, c'était la meilleure machine, l'écureuil le surpasse, mais il est plus pointu à piloter d'après certains pilotes 🤔
Maybe someday, Switzerland's a long way from me. Your Father sounds like he is a very smart person being able to work 20 years on that Helo. Very impressive. Take care :)
A gallon a minute and a lot of grease points on the rotor blades every time we refuel a 44 gallon drum and canvas seats , a great work horse able to lift a ton , the boom was full of some kind of gas and had a gauge at the back to check for any leaking as that would indicate a cracked boom as that boom does a lot of work when lifting.
