The overall standard at World Cup 98 was so much better than any of the last 3 World Cups: more entertainment, better headline stories (Ronaldo, Beckham, Zidane), better gamaes and the goal from Bergkamp in this game is the ultimate goal. Im argentinian but I must say Holland deserved to win the match. After our defeat I started supporting Holland and wanted them to be the Champions. They're one of the best teams in that world cup.

Both teams could have won, but Argentina that year was the only team we really feared. After this match i really thought we where gonna reach to the finals. Unfortunately we have some bad histories with penalty shootouts :)

What made it more infuriating was that Argentina would have played Brazil in the semi-final had they won, and that would've been an all time classic! Both teams had a mix of veterans and young players when they were at their prime. But it was not to be..will always wonder what if.
Bergkamp's goal was without a doubt the best one of the 1998 finals and that pass he received from De Boer was par excellence. It's a pity they couldn't win this World Cup or last year's but frankly speaking the 1998 squad was far better than the one in South Africa. Hopefully in 2014 the Oranje can finally get their hands on the elusive Cup. It would be a tall order to win in Brazil though seeing that European team don't seem to fare too well when the WC is played in the Americas.

I cried when Argentina lost this match because I was a Batistuta nut. I larked on about him throughout 1998 and 1999, that's what all I ever talked about at the time.
Holland and Argentina were among the best 4 teams in this tournament. It is kind of sad that they played each other in the quarterfinal, but that is how the cookie crumbles sometimes. Bergkamp was world class; Ortega was a really good crafty player too, but he could do without the excessive diving.
And ofcourse we qualified for 2010. We were amongst the first European countries to qualify as expected. We didn't had any trouble in 2006 either. We'll be practicing against Italy, Paraguay, USA and the UK. Looking forward to it.

Everyone remembers this match because of the amazing goal of Bergkamp. But for me the best part is the headbutt. It looks like van der Sar gets accidentally headbutted. But if you look closer you see van der Sar running very fast to Ortega after the dive and before Ortega could get up. VAN DER SAR WANTED TO GET A HEADBUTT!!!

One of the best goals I've EVER seen. The ball control on Bergkamp was amazing. I still don't know how he was able to control it and THEN beat Ayala. It was skill but also fitness. Bergkamp was in tremendous shape and through speed and strength was able to beat Ayala.

This was such a fantastic team - very Hiddinck like. Talented, organised and wonderful to watch. Davids was player of the tournament. Shame they lost to Brazil on pens.

Probably the best Holland team of my generation, had some fantastic players. I'm always puzzled as to why they always underperform in the World Cup though. I'm an England fan and I always wish England could produce the calibre of players Holland seem to be able to.
