I went to Colorado State for three years for equine science before I quit. My advisor Tim Jedra recommended an internship at Blue Mound Quarter Horses in Nevis, MN and I witnessed so much animal cruelty that I lost interest in riding horses after riding and competing in barrel racing for ten years. They were inbreeding, forcibly breeding to unwilling mares, tying ropes from colt and filly's feet to around their cinch area to force train farrier pick-up, and having multiple difficult births that resulted in dead babies and/or dead mares. I had to do some self reflection and realize that I couldn't call myself a horse lover while actively participating in their abuse and death. In the equine reproduction lab at CSU, when I did a necropsy for lab for my equine disease class, I learned that they euthanized the horse JUST for the purpose of this lab because the horse wasn't performing under saddle well. If you love horses you have to ask yourself why you would contribute to breeding more of them into existence when there are so many unwanted horses that go to slaughter. You're adding to the problem and part of the problem. And that's not even getting in to the unnecessary human caused injury and deaths of horses in racing and every other discipline.

Alisia Demi oh wow! That is horrible. I’m so glad you shared your experience, but I’m sorry you had to go though that. I have thought about going into equine science but have not made a decision yet.

I understand your concerns. Much of what you wrote is terrible. It obviously cut down to your soul. Consider that some will look to change the industry from inside and others like you will choose to do it from the outside. Horses are magnificent animals.
In my nursing degree we had to dissect cats. There are so many unwanted and abused cats. That did not make me feel better. I still want nurses and doctors to learn. I still want veterinary medicine to be taught and practiced. Though we don’t kill people for human medicine many human bodies are used and needed for medical students to learn from.
There are many evils in this world, sometimes fighting them feels like using a bucket to empty the oceans. Many dogs are made pets and not allowed to do what they were bred for. Example: Australian sheep dogs, the urge and need to herd needs to be expressed or they go crazy and leads to abuse. Fox terriers are bred to go into the ground to get foxes, rats, rabbits- their tail is even designed to be pulled so you can pulled them out of a hole they get stuck in. Their tail is not harm, the dog is not in pain as other reeds of dog would be.
My point is allow yourself your righteous anger and disappointment. Not everyone abuses their animals. Not every horse can be a barrel racer. But those that can, do, and enjoy it, you are allowing to to meet their potential. A true pairing of rider and horse is a beautiful thing. I hope you will take up riding again. There is a horse, one who love the horse /rider relationship waiting for you to love and care for him or her.

@@emilys9017 I sincerely hope that you decided not to. If I could go back, I would tell my past self to stop being involved in the horse industry and support sanctuaries instead.

@@kenyonbissett3512 I appreciate your compassion. However I will never go back to riding. The only thing a true horse lover can support is sanctuaries for horses and the end of breeding. I would take that further and say that we should stop viewing horses as here for us to ride and to entertain us and be used for sport. Horses really just want to be left alone. We can't be perfect and avoid all animal suffering but we can avoid supporting the horse industry pretty easily, even if we grew up part of it.
