Learn how to play Starship Trooper by Yes from the 1971 'Yes Album'.
Performed originally by Steve Howe, this online tutorial gets into the details of chords and notes from the actual performance.
This is a replacement video to my original which suffers from poor camera angle. In this video it's as clear as it can get (at least until i buy a real DSLR camera. Until then will not be spectacularly high def!).

yah, I've seen a video of Steve actually showing how he plays this and he definitely made a switch/pause exactly as I teach it here. Someone said it was wrong, but it was some live footage they saw. Steve doesn't always switch positions for the riff, just at the beginning of the song on the album.. Anyways, I met him a few years ago, so the magic rubbed off on me and I have superhuman sensitivity to his guitar playing lol. So have fun with this lesson- a marvellous creation by Yes!

That may be true here, but Howe's RUclips video of the opening for 'Long Distance Runaround' is not the same as the album version. I can't speak to this song, either yours or Howe's demonstration (having only delved into the bass so far), but Howe apparently either forgot how he originally played LDR or he revised it over the years.
I have confirmed this by both learning all the parts from the album (except drums), studying them both theoretically & practically, doing intensive aural comparison, and using several programs to (more or less) isolate and otherwise analyze the guitar on the album (Wavelab Pro, Mid Side & L/R isolation, EQ/Filtering, speed adjustments - i.e. slowing it down, FFT analysis, etc.).
The LDR version he demonstrates in his video is (arguably) easier to play but it makes less musical sense, and it sounds wrong when performed with the studio version.
Not too surprising considering the immense repertoire of complex songs he wrote and performed over decades; changes are bound to creep in for any number of reasons.
Anyway, kudos on your instruction videos; they are excellent!

As a songwriter myself I can vouch that over time you can forget how you played certain parts! Thanks for your comments

LOVE the viewpoint!!! Have been complaining for years about having to do mental gymnastics to invert chord charts or videos, seemingly made for left-handers, around to make sense to me. However, I get really frustrated with you repeating little bits instead of just repeating the whole phrase . Just repeat the phrase over a few times starting out slow and maybe accelerating so context is set. if we need to repeat there's always rewind on the video. I find it very hard to slog through all the breakdown stuff. Rhythm shouldn't be broken up for learning. Brain imprints/mimics better with steady tempo. Ok, MY brain...... don't mean to imply everyone learns better like this though I wouldn't be surprised, like zero.. thanks so much!!! been wanting to know this for years.

I've bitched about that shit ever since starting guitar lessons as a kid in 1979 as a lefty, always was a lefty, always will be, and it's a nightmare having to transpose everything
to learn stuff. Even my teachers had a rough time of dealing with it. It is very hard to slog through breakdown stuff, but even if takes longer to get it down, it's worth it
in the long run. But it sometimes takes patience that I just don't have. I find these days, since I'm more of an intermediate player by now, at least, and have better guitar
gear here at home, etc., it's best to take one song at at a time, and concentrate on THAT and tune everything else out, until you learn that song. Trying to learn everything
at once is never going to work. One blues lesson at a time, one rock song at a time, etc. Spend an hour practicing scales one day, an hour doing barre chords another,
a Drop D song another day for an hour or two, and things will eventually coalesce. Been studying Beatles lessons the past year, it's like, what part do I even learn first?
You cannot master both guitar parts right away. Sit down and learn John's parts, then later George's, etc. and eventually you can play the song to some amalgamation
of both parts, but it's never easy. I was never a lead guitarist, but I'm working on that now, and improving as I work at it.

Thank u ... as a longtime prog drummer/synth writer, I've chipped away at guitar, these tracks, this is the best lesson for ST anywhere. I played perc for Jon in '10 (believe it or not), and so appreciate this. In Van let me know.

thanks much, that was well explained with great video illustrations! Mr Howe is so amazing...really no other rock player like him! i'd also add; he plays a lot of this riff hybrid style using pick, 2nd and 3rd finger as he does in so many other pieces. its obviously not necessary, but it actually make it easier as you get proficient with that technique...thanks again my friend, great stuff!

Hey can you post up a lot more of Steves licks riffs songs etc, with tabs? I still need the tabs, to learn Yes, for now.. Steves style is so complex and always moving around a lot.. Not predictable at all. Some players I can learn from watching like this or by hearing, but NOT Steve!

  • @thiscorrosion900

This is a tough song, not chord-wise, (chords are easy and the timing is not that weird) but the different movements. Also the middle acoustic part is difficult, but it is of course hard to replicate on an electric guitar. A 12-string acoustic elec. or 6 string ac. would be a lot better. Now at least I have a jumping off point to learn the opening section. Dean have you seen the Band Geek
cover of this song? They did such a fine job of it, the guy's Rickenbacker bass sounds so damned good.
