This absolutely works! My check engine light (P0420 code) has been on for the last year and a half. My son put this on, we had the codes reset, drove the car for 100 miles and the check engine light never came back on. Got my emissions test today and I passed. Had tried putting all types of cleaners (seafoam, redline cleaner, Lucas fuel injector treatment) and none of them remediated the light. My son had to drill the hole a little larger than stated in the video to fit my O2 sensor and we added the steel wool as mentioned. I have a 2009 Nissan Altima with186000 miles and I passed emissions thanks to this!
Worked for me on a 2016 Honda Pilot. First reset your engine or unhook the battery. After that drive it for around 120-130 miles. The check engine light will come back on at 50 miles, but keep going to around 120-130 miles. Just passed smog. Thank you for this post

I wanted to personally thank you for posting this fix. my 1998 Toyota Avalon had been throwing the p0420 code. My local repair shop wanted to charge me $800 for a new cat.. I told them to go f*** themselves. I went to my local AutoZone and picked up those non fouler's and went to my Menards and picked up a $10 brand new bit and it took about 5 minutes to drill out the non fouler. it was a pain in the ass to remove the O2 sensor but once I got it out and put the non foulers there it passed emissions with flying colors.
Thanks Daniel, you are helping many people who otherwise would not Be able to pay thousands for a simple fix, keep the videos coming, thanks Ignore the haters, peace.
Daniel,Thanks for posting this fix. No more PO420 code. The hardest part was actually drilling out the anti foulers without ruining the threads. I have a Blazer that has 2 cats and they were plugged. A new factory set up was over 1000.00. So I delete the smaller cat and replaced the main one with an aftermarket. Issue was the 420 code was coming still. The anti fouler mod fixed it and I am a happy boy!
This WORKED FOR ME, THANK YOU! No errors after my trip to work today, everything is in the green. Now I can finally get this ridiculous inspection to pass!

Thank you for sharing. :)

Paying $1500 at the stealership doesn't HAVE TO BE the only answer. I was able to replace my Jetta cat with an aftermarket from Walker (about $100 back then) and it fixed the cat issue. Had a muffler shop weld it in for about $100 too. Worth looking into aftermarket converters to see if it will permanently and legally fix your problem.

I wanted to thank you personally for this video. I threw a permanent P0420 code , so no way was I going to pass smog. I followed your video instructions EXACTLY step by step. Used my OBD2 to clear the code....3 drive cycles later all modules closed and ready to test. Cleared emissions perfectly. I am so lucky I came across your vid. You saved me a few hundred dollars in parts and at least a full weekend's worth of work under the van... Many thanks!!!
great video, some folks without the resources to outlay that much money to replace a catalytic (which by the way should outlast the life of the car, it is made of stainless steel). Great way to keep the car on the road allow those folk to get to work... etc.. thank you for this video.
This really works. I have a 2001 gmc sierra and I tried it. I figured I had nothing to lose. I tried it and the monitors ran. I went and it passed emission with no problem. Ps it only cost me 5 dollars because I had the drill bit
Its bs because in NY they can charge you 400 to "attempt a repair" and you pass, and if the conditions are right you can certainly pass with p0420. Just set every other monitor. If you get to the shop before the next drive cycle finishes you pass.
I'm quite my car does not need a Catalyst Converter. That PO420 reads Catalyst System Low Efficiency (Bank 1). The car was fine all winter. I'm going to try this, I believe what you described is the problem. Everything else has been changed.

Still working? It’s impossible to know in one day if a fix like this was successful. It usually takes 60-100 miles for the sensor to trigger a cel after you clear it out
@@youtubeisbroken241 I know. Most people say it came back after a few days. But I can't get any answers from people that say it worked lol. So now that it's getting cold I will give this a shot.
spafro101 I removed my o2 sensor and sprayed half a can of seafoam in and then replaced the sensor and ran my car outdoors till the smoke stopped. Not only is my code gone but the car doesn’t stink when I get on the thruway like it used to and i gained some power back. Sounds like a better fix than this. This is just tricking the computer and does nothing to get fix the reason it threw the code. It should keep the code away though if all you need is to pass inspection. I had the option of trying this but decided to try cleaning the cats with sea foam and I’m glad I did because my engine runs much better.
I'm going to try the "cat clean" stuff first, with some '91' gas. If that doesn't do the trick, I'll be under the car getting this trick done. I thank you for this info. Glad to hear, actually it doesn't improve gas mileage it restores it, gas mileage drops when a engine is in limp mode running extra rich to avoid potential damage, it you turn the light off wallah factory gas mileage is restored. Anyway glad to hear you had success
I just tried this on my 2002 Toyota Camry and it worked. Installed it and disconnected the battery for a few minutes to clear the code. When I started it afterwards the engine was dying and bogging out at idle. Was able to drive around for 10 minutes and then it ran fine. Passed Illinois emissions test today 5/17. $7 fix as opposed to $1200 for Midas to replace the catalytic converter. Thanks mate!!
05 silverado 2500hd catalyst converter low efficiency (bank 1) so i did this and reset my codes and worked like a charm. Mine was after the CC on drivers side. Thank you. This came up as soon as i bought my truck and i got worried.
Haha no problem, not sure about German cars, drilling the spacer is required depending on o2 probe length, for the 10 or so cars I did it on I had to drill them all out
I tried your method to troubleshoot if the CC was my problem. On a 2001 Chevy Express van the O2 sensor is too big to fit into the non-fouler coupling, even after being drilled out with a 1/2 bit. Even if it had fit, there wouldn't be room to screw it in because the CC is too close to the frame. This is for anyone trying your method on this model vehicle, and thank you for posting this video.
Thank you for showing this video. I am one of the guys that can't afford a new catalytic converter, so I am going to give this a shot. Why not. Right?? I hope it works for me. I will let you all know if it does!!!
Great video and very informative 👍🏻..! So on a 95 Vette I would need 2 packs of the Spark plug Foulers because the car has dual exhaust and a O2 sensor on each side... Right?
hi is it fair to say that this O2 sensor can be affected also and detect if there’s oil leakage spread all over under & side of engine? I figured this happened to me and got the code P0420 and after driving a while, engine light didn’t come back on
OBD2 code p0420 doesn't necessarily mean your catalytic converter is bad. Actually your cat should never go bad and should last the lifetime of the engine. The only reason they ever need to be replaced is because there's a problem. Even if 🐈 is internally FUBAR, (clogged) you can just gut the 🐈 and weld it back on. This way is probably much easier but I sometimes you got to do things the hard way. LOL good stuff BTW
Very interesting; I've seen this done on vehicles that were being experimented on with a brown's gas kit in order to fool the computer. One thing to bear in mind - the problem could be a plugged up catalytic converter, and fooling the computer to pass emissions inspection won't prevent it from ruining the engine.
Ruining is a strong word. A clogged cat, even a severely clogged one, should only affect performance of the engine. In an extreme case, one could argue higher temperatures developing for the exhaust valves. But that would likely only happen after years of being clogged. I have seen that with crushed tail pipes. But that’s a major restriction compared to a clogged cat
Few questions please...This gadget goes into "downstream only (never upstream)" 02 sensor, right? If i have two banks then i have to install two gadgets? Any Cali folks passed emission using this creative fix? Thank you for vid advice !
that's because CA is insane. down here in AZ and most other states they just plug the machine into the OBD II port and if it doesn't throw any codes they pass you through. they don't visually inspect shit around here
11/13/21 My 2005 Lexus GX with 325K Miles failed smog on 11/11/21 then went and did this exact process and the codes cleared after I completed a drive cycle as well on 11/13/21. Good luck.
Hmm let's see.. use this guy's video and about 8 bucks to quick fix my car so I can get to work and not loose my job that helps me raise my 2 kids because my husband left me to go "persue" his early years and lost child support fight with him and he TOOK the car with NO p0420 issues or wait for the Ozone layer to give me 1,400.00 large to fix the issue. Wow! Life decisions are sooo hard lol. Great vid dude tks
This trick worked for me. 2000 Honda Insight. I still plan on replacing the catalytic converter because emissions do cause health problems in congested areas. It was a pain keeping the washer from falling on the threads when I put it in the cat so I put a wire twist tie around it and tightened a rubber band around the trailing wire. Then made sure to take the twisty tie and the rubber band off so it wouldn't burn up.

I'm not from Cali so I couldn't say but I don't see why they would and if they do just go to another service shop, some places are way more particular than others so look for a just basic corner shop not some place that's going to do some crazy 400 point inspection
Basic corner shop... thats also certified by the state of CA and subject to fines and penalties, including jail or prison. They are pretty rare these days.
Are they 18mm ? I have a 06 pathfinder . I’m not sure if these sensors are pretty much a universal size for each vehicle. Or if I need a certain size non-fouler
Love you video but how would I go about it. I drive a 2008 Jeep Wrangler Jk with 4cats same code P0430 on the driver side bank2 below threshold . Do I install it before the first cat or before the second cat ?
Never install these before cats. Those before cats (another name is upstream cats) do not throw P420, P430 codes. Only post cats (downstream cats) throw those codes.
"Dont cram it in there so it can't sense shit" 😂🤣 haha had me busting up. Nice thorough video on how to escape the nightmare of not being able to pass smog.
Righteous video bro thank you. I saw a guy on here that was going to spend his customer's money on new spark plugs saying that the spark plugs were burning too hot because they're old one idiot I'm sure that your video will help me get through this 420 code.
For those complaining that this causes smog, you have a point, but it's not as bad as you think. The CEL comes on when the cat drops to 95% efficiency which is a pretty high threshold. Spacing the O2 sensor back might stretch it to 90%, so just a little more smog in the air, not like it's a 1970's polluter. If you do this hack and it doesn't work, you've got other problems, a vacuum leak, leaky injector, bad coil, up to and including replacing the cat.
A bad ignition coil was to blame for me. Cylinder misfire sends unburned fuel/air mixture right on to the cat. Coating it, making it less efficient. I am going to try cataclean, 91-93 octane gas, and a long trip on the interstate. If that don't work, I will try the oven cleaner in the O2 port hole. Then the spacers if them don't work. Before I buy a new cat.

Haha no problem, not sure about German cars, drilling the spacer is required depending on o2 probe length, for the 10 or so cars I did it on I had to drill them all out
I have a vw golf , would I need to was the drill on the spacers ?
I tried your method to troubleshoot if the CC was my problem. On a 2001 Chevy Express van the O2 sensor is too big to fit into the non-fouler coupling, even after being drilled out with a 1/2 bit. Even if it had fit, there wouldn't be room to screw it in because the CC is too close to the frame. This is for anyone trying your method on this model vehicle, and thank you for posting this video.

hi is it fair to say that this O2 sensor can be affected also and detect if there’s oil leakage spread all over under & side of engine? I figured this happened to me and got the code P0420 and after driving a while, engine light didn’t come back on
OBD2 code p0420 doesn't necessarily mean your catalytic converter is bad. Actually your cat should never go bad and should last the lifetime of the engine. The only reason they ever need to be replaced is because there's a problem. Even if 🐈 is internally FUBAR, (clogged) you can just gut the 🐈 and weld it back on. This way is probably much easier but I sometimes you got to do things the hard way. LOL good stuff BTW
Catalytic Converters last the life of the car - that is until it is stolen off the car.
Thank you for your reply.
Just want to make sure, is it the one connected to the shift gear module??
Very interesting; I've seen this done on vehicles that were being experimented on with a brown's gas kit in order to fool the computer. One thing to bear in mind - the problem could be a plugged up catalytic converter, and fooling the computer to pass emissions inspection won't prevent it from ruining the engine.
Ruining is a strong word. A clogged cat, even a severely clogged one, should only affect performance of the engine. In an extreme case, one could argue higher temperatures developing for the exhaust valves. But that would likely only happen after years of being clogged. I have seen that with crushed tail pipes. But that’s a major restriction compared to a clogged cat
maybe it will lead the cylinder misfire
@@youtubeisbroken241 high exhaust pressures can definitely ruin an engine seen it over heat Diesel engines and cars

The cat is still working at 90% efficiency when the P0420 is tripped so virtue signaling about the ozone layer really is absurd

Nope, the machine catches the code not the mechanic and his leniency. They all use the same machines for state inspections.
Basic corner shop... thats also certified by the state of CA and subject to fines and penalties, including jail or prison. They are pretty rare these days.

Love you video but how would I go about it. I drive a 2008 Jeep Wrangler Jk with 4cats same code P0430 on the driver side bank2 below threshold . Do I install it before the first cat or before the second cat ?
You should install it by the o2 sensor closest to the back of the exhaust
