How Much Time Can Flights Make Up After Delayed Departures?

- Particularly when you’re taking a short trip, or when there’s an important appointment at your destination, delays stink. It should go without saying that airlines, pilots, and flight attendants dislike delays as much as passengers, and try to do everything possible to reduce the tardiness of a flight. You may have heard a pilot make an announcement before departure to apologize for a delay and promise to make-up time en route.
In today’s video, we explore how feasible this is, and all the factors that contribute to recovering from a delayed departure. Let’s get started!

This is something I have wondered about. I particularly remember an Easyjet flight from Amsterdam back to Gatwick; the published time for the flight was 1hr 10mins, but we left 40 mins late and still got to Gatwick on time.
The railways use what they call "recovery time" to cushion against delays to arrival; there seems to be an element of this in airline schedules.
Yeah, most delay are caused by passengers themselves. They sometimes didn’t notice the boarding time because they roam around duty free shops. Some cases are tight connecting flights.
Interesting to learn something everyday
I learned that smaller airports are smaller than larger airports.
So true. Flew Emirates from Dubai to Zurich and departed 50 mins late. The pilot made an announcement that we had to wait for connecting passengers from new york. We then had to wait for their luggage to be loaded. He said they'll make up time on route. We arrived 10 unites early and were placed in holding pattern and touched down on time.
The boarding process is intentionally slow. More than one study has shown that boarding from the back to the front speeds things up. But because almost all of the modern world is so hung up on status, we have to let those who paid more get on first, rather than getting everyone to their destination more quickly.
It makes sense when you take into account the fact that airlines earn the most money by selling their loyalty programs to credit card companies, and not by flying people from point a to b or c.
@@hwak6501 no they don’t. 🙄
@@rtbrtb_dutchy4183 they do in fact, you can look into it
@@hwak6501 depending on airline, it’s anywhere from 10% to 19% of revenue.
Revenue is also not profit. When people have their “miles” banked and accumulating to be used, those are liabilities. Why? Because at some point they get cashed in for flights.
It silly to think that airlines make most their money with those programs and not with flying people from A to B.
Also, people who know nothing about aviation like you and claim that boarding is "intentionally slow" don't take the mass & balance into consideration. The aircraft will tip backwards if you board people from back to front. Also, it has happened on multiple occasions that disembarking at the back entry door of the aircraft had stopped while disembarking at the front entry door continued, and this caused the aircraft to tip backwards causing significant injuries and damage. If you can board at both the front and the back it is possible to board people from the mid zone to the aft/front, but when you're boarding from only the front it is safest if peole are spread more or less evenly across the aircraft.
I fly every seven days as part of a remote worksite charter. Because we are so used to the boarding process, when we departing Calgary, we board the plane fast as it’s routine but end up sitting there for 15+ minutes to accommodate the “wheels up” time. Gate agents and crew love us and working our flights apparently.
Firebag.
Second, love your channel btw very informative
You're third.
"Making up time" does not always work in your favour. Flying from BGI to MIA we arrived about 15 minutes before our scheduled time of arrival. Still had to wait on the ground for that approximate period of time for a parking slot to become open.
Intresting
Normally in the air half an hour can easily be made up. I was on an Emirates flight from Manchester to Dubai and we left Manchester at 23:17, about 2 hours late, we made up about an hour and a half
That’s some serious tail winds!
I flew OS in December 2022 from LHR-VIE scheduled departure: 6:00, we left at 6:30, scheduled arrival: 9:15, we arrived at 9:00, all times are in local time.
The last time I flew I was delayed, missed a train as a result and had to wait 2hrs for the next one. I've seen flights with delayed departures being given an earlier than scheduled expected arrival time on the flight radar app a number of times. So perhaps it works out better for passengers if there's a delay on those occasions.
Several times, not often or always, that one passenger that caused the delay of doors closing often had too much fun at the duty-free area, showing up at the plane door, sheepishly, with several shopping bags and then will attempt to cram all those shopping bags into already full overhead bins... haaay...

How could be ATC arrival slot be reduced if you cannot even depart on time because of that?
My worst delay experience is 5 years ago when I and my family fly with AirAsia from Banda Aceh to Kuala Lumpur. Supposed to departed at 14:30 UTC+7 with AK420, the flight itself departed at 18:15 UTC+7 due to the aircraft that assigned to the aforementioned route were stuck in Hong Kong for a few hours. To make things worse, the airport staff didn't even let us to wait in the waiting room until 1 hour before the aircraft was landed. Such a bad yet horrifying experience I've ever encountered in my life
AirAsia is corrupt from the top and has shite service. A total boycott is needed
These methods are great but according to the time my flight was delayed for 3 hours, these methods won’t be able to recover from the delay
Amsterdams Airport runway where you land from the uk.... is a longer taxi run after landing than the flight itself 😂
"Just fly faster"... doesn't work out on the road as well. Especially in cities.
"Just fly faster" Increases fuel consumption.
It works when I drive to Vegas during the darkness of night 😁. A “12” hour drive I have down to 10.5 hours.
MacH💦,
Love your videos ❤

Not that much. Planes are designed to cruise within a narrow bandwidth of speed. So when it flies "faster" it is only slightly faster.
Uhh people are so slow at boarding. I prefer to wait in the terminal and get on last.
Sorry, we apologize as this flight is overbooked...
If you are flying a very long distance, flying on the other side of the world may also be an option.
What?
So if you're flying LHR-LAX, you think it's faster to fly over Europe, Asia and the Pacific Ocean?
@@heidirabenau511 oh, is that what he is getting at? 🤣🤣 I figured that might be it but wasn’t sure.
LHR to LAX is always west bound.
There are some flights though, If the destination is on the other side of the world, where it does matter. The famous one is Singapore Airlines from Singapore to NY and back to Singapore. Both legs are flown eastbound. So u could say on the first leg over the pacific and the second leg over the Atlantic. Which technically isn’t really the case either, since they will be flying mostly via the polar route.
@@heidirabenau511 I think LHR-LAX is still a short distance for that option. I mean flights like SYD-LHR
The reality is that you will get there when you get there eventually. Nothing you can do about mother nature and unexpected delays
