@@sumo813 nope, its a slide to the right. The center pulls left to sell the run and the entire line slides right except the right guard. Mckivitz is picking up the edge after the chip by kittle. RG buford was filling in for an injured feliciano and missed the assignment. Look at the guy RG actually blocks, hes blocking the same guy as the LG who is accurately sliding right.
That was happening all day long. The Chiefs were blitz heavy. They should have kept someone in the backfield to pick up the blitzer which would have given Purdy time to find the open receiver.
if only they had a bigger back than CMC who specialized in blocking. it'd be a positive if that back could catch too so there would be option plays for him whenever he was in to keep the D guessing. too bad most teams don't run a big blocking RB anymore. Kyle should really look into a big blocking RB...
Pathetic!!!leaving their top defender unblocked. Why can’t they just block their own guy that’s in front of them 🤦🏻♂️Atleast it would slow them down 1 sec more and purdy would of found the open man.2 running plays would of gotten us that td 💯
Not buying that at all your telling me that anytime on that offensive line is just going to go ok we don’t care about jones the entire gameplan was to always have eyes on Chris jones. Game was 100 percent rigged and it felt that way
This is a fair comments about missed PAT; problem is the entire game strategy of both teams would've changed resulting in different plays..........and who knows what may have happened. But the point is also solid in the sense that if it's made; the urgency and offensive strategy of Chiefs would've been different.
I think the blocked PAT was not a factor. It would've made the Chiefs realize they needed 6 to win, which they end up going for (and have a high probability of making) to win it in regulation. They settled for the OT play with the FG because they had confidence that momentum was on their side, and they were catching fire.
What happened on that play was Burford #74 wasn't as well-played or practiced as Jon Feliciano, who was hurt 2:28 left in the 4th quarter. Hence Feliciano's replacement Mr. Burford didn't know what he was doing and let K.C.'s Jones waltz right in to pressure Purdy. That cost us the touchdown in overtime..
absolute brutal error ... but but but, is a game of errors like any game --- niners gave up 139 yards on 2 KC drives to tie & win the game (64 +75 = 139) with NO STOPS === many brutal errors on defense !!! ... perhaps next year ???
@@brucewayne3602 the real error was Kyle calling an empty set on 3rd and 4.. keep #23 and #44 in the backfield for picking up blocks... have 2 WR and the TE as the 6th man blocking aka the old chip block and release option up the seam or speed out.. play.. Even if you have an OLine missing assignment.. you give Purdy TIME.. Time to scramble.. time to roll out, time to make an adlib ... Kyle screwed the pooch on this one and it really stinks..
@@TripAces Thankyou ---- absolutely correct --- all about giving Purdy a bit more time with options ... many errors though - the defense allowed 139 yards (64 + 75 ) on KC's tying and winning drives ... that alone tells me KC (most unfortunately) was deserving !!!
Correction, the single most damaging play was the 49er punt returner who lacked the presence of mind to simply collapse on the ball rather than attempt to pick it up after it had glanced off another player even more guilty of poor judgement.
Yes. There are those times when a player needs to think about what is most important at the time and on a punt the most important thing is to catch the ball/get possesion. In that moment he had visions of a return and it cost them dearly. I see that same as Flowers fumble at the goal line, maintaining possesion was more important than scoring. It was going to be 1st and goal, were it 4th down yes dive, but maintaining possesion was the most important result at that time.
man, the punt returner didnt wanted to return at all. THe moron in front of him touched the ball, that became live. He tried to recover and in the spur he rose again. It isnt his fault. It's shannacunt the one that killed this team AGAIN. 3 superbowl played, 0 wins. He gifted 2 times to KC and 1 to NE (as OC, he played probably the worst second half in the history of the game in atlanta, the game was totally rigged....)
That was the deal killer play. Completely terrible O line defense blocking (as you just showed us). The Chiefs had 9 unblocked blitz plays in this game. It's a miracle Purdy was able to complete as many passes as he did. If we actually get a decent O line on the right side we could take Purdy to even a higher level! PLEASE DRAFT A RIGHT TACKLE!!!!
When the unblocked Blitzer is Chris Jones? Yea it's a huge mistake by Kyle. Like every big game. Hate Kyle. He killed this team with his horrible game management. Again. It's gonna be like the falcons decline the year after 28-3
Totally agree. Jones was unhindered, I’ll bet he was as surprised as anybody. Jennings is going to win his route if he has another second to work with. He looks back and the ball is already out of reach. Purdue really had no chance, if he tried to roll or run Jones was gonna swallow him up, he did right. Possibly if he doesn’t throw so far Jennings can make a play on the ball but that’s asking a lot. Burford, #74 just can’t allow Jones past him. I’d love to know what the actual play call was…
This is a fantastic analysis man you are spot on. Niners got way too cute, if they gave purdy even a second more time to go through progressions he would have made the pass that he made all game.
@@ConcernedNinerFan As a Chiefs fan, I agree. They didn't go smash mouth enough. Shanahan must not have studied the film on probably the best defensive backfired in the NFL. He underestimated their shutdown ability, and the fact that they have done it all year. The formula for beating great defensive backfields, is to open holes, and force them to come up to make tackles on running backs. Then you can start throwing on them after they get tackle weary. It's a tried and true formula.
Very good & honest analysis - my perception is that Kyle Shanahan as "great" as he is advertised he is = Marv Levy & Dan Reeves - AKA could never win a SB so far he has lost 2 as a HC and one as a OC. Sooooo ????

Lets be honest. Dont Fumble the Ball after that Punt. You probably win. And didnt they miss an Extra Point after a touchdown? Score that and you probably also win...
Or at the very least, FALL ON THE BALL instead of trying to scoop it up while running after it, which gave the Chiefs enough time to get there for the turnover. Costly mental mistakes.
One team wins, the other loses in the final game that’s between TWO of the best teams. This game came down to one hell of an entertainment - that’s all you can ask for.
The 49ers lost the Super Bowl before the season started by Saving money not signing Robbie Gold and Having a Rookie place Kicker on the team. Moody lost 4 games during the season and the Super Bowl!! Bottom line is the 49ers management saved around 4 million dollars signing Moody!!
They cheaped out on the O line and it cost them a SB. Burford came in for Feliciano who got injured in the game. But he's got plenty of experience as a starter on this line so no excuse really. There were a number of plays that cost us - Mccloud not falling on the ball on the botched punt return, not kicking the ball in OT, man it was amateur hour out there.
ya team def folded out there luck can only get us so far and luck has always been on the chiefs side that team has the clutch gene and you cant give mahomes the ball back to win it in OT
What about the 3 and 5 pass play before they kicked the field goal? If they would have run the ball, that would have forced KC to take 1 of their 2 time outs left. This would have helped because to drive the length of the field on 1 time out opposed to 2 could have made it more difficult for them to tie the game and send it to OT. My view, but doesn’t matter now.
The not converted 3rd and 4 after the 2 minute warning, with similar blown protection was more critical. With that conversion, and perhaps 2 more 1st downs, you can score the winning field goal with no time left for Mahomes, just like the Chief's did to Philly last year.
Initially thought the RT screwed up, but this was RG Burford’s mistake. I agree with the presenter here. There are times when Kyle overthinks things and they’re going up a Chief D which is saying ‘I don’t care what they’re doing, we’re just coming, deal with it.”
Kyle S thinks he's too smart. The difference between McVay and Kyle S is McVay knew he had to get a GREAT QB to win SB. So Rams got Stafford. But Kyle thinks he can win with a good QB. He can scheme good guy to a win. 49ets Won't spend for great one and missed on T.Lance. Then Purdy shows his limits.Purdy can't make plays like Mahomes. 3 runs by Mahomes then throw for winning TD. Game over.
@@brianjungen4059Burrow does. Lamar does. Stroud does. Mahomes is a great talent but he’s not alone on top of some mountain like a certain weird sports pundit would make you believe. The difference in this game, and all season, was the Chiefs’ defense, especially the secondary. The Chiefs are the most complete team in football right now. This video got it right - the RG blew his job either through his own fault or the fault of the scheme.
Great analysis, when watching the game live I just thought dang they got to Purdy quick, but you pointed out exactly why. In addition, I think they should have tried to score a TD on 4th down as well.
This game never should have went to Overtime...The 49er's had the ball with 2 minutes to go in regulation, they're driving and had a 3rd and 4 in the redzone. They threw an incompletion and stopped the clock with 1:54 and then they kicked a field goal. This gave KC their chance. They should have gave the ball to McCaffery on 3rd and 4 and if it they didn't make it...burn the clock to force KC to take a timeout, but if they picked up the first down the game is over. Either way the incompletion stopped the clock, and gave Mahomes time to force overtime. The 49er's gave this game away just like they did before...They had the top running back in the league and had 2 plays to get 4 yards. They could have took this game to 2 seconds and kicked the game winning field goal. This loss is on Kyle Shannahan!
You're right, everything you said...as a k. c.fan that's what I thought they would do..especially since their defense was worn down..I just knew if we got the ball back we would have less then 20 seconds, maybe less. Now I knew mahomes did it once before,.drove down in less then 13 seconds to get a field goal but didn't think they would let him do it again..felt so much better when k.c. got the ball with "all" that time...mahomes last to touch the ball in play offs....his record i believe is....7 - 0
I agree. Something I saw before the game was the lineup of the two OL, and as soon as that game went into overtime I knew the Chiefs had it in their hands. If that extra point hadn't been blocked it may well have gone the other way.
Good analogy! That definitely hurt the 9’rs. The better team one in the end. 49’rs with Purdy will get another shot it some year. Chiefs are gonna have to be very hungry for a 3peat!
Marty Schottenheimer, Marv Levy, Marvin Lewis, Jim Mora, Dan Reeves, Jeff Fisher, Chuck KNOX, Sam Wyche, Kyle Shanahan... Do you keep going with Kyle or do you stop the pain now?
Glad you went over this play! This was one of my biggest disappointments! I think they could've even done a Run play or some kind of trick play like they did with the first TD. What would've been beautiful is if they did a QB sneak where Purdy could run it in for the W. Anyway, it was a great game! At least it was exciting with 2 of the best teams!!
Three or four different players on the team got hurt. That’s what caused them. And the referees not calling a single holding penalty on the Kansas City offense of line. I can’t mention how many times Bosa was tackled, and nothing was called. But, they had to get it for Mahomes because they want to take a lot of the emphasis away from Tom Brady.
I agree the refs swallowed their whistles while Bosa got tackled play after play. And the right guard on this play was a sub who completely blew his blocking assignment. The chiefs were going to be handed this game by the league’s refs unless they got their asses handed to them. Mahomes and Travis Swift had to be THE Super Bowl story!

How do you let the KC best rusher go unblocked you ask? Let me sum it up in one ward. ( shanahan ) why would you pull all your left linemen to the left including your center just to pass…. To the right? Just do the basic blocking 101 and run the ball…. 🤬🤬🤬
EXACTLY CORRECT. Nothing wrong with this play call --- and, I'm sure SF coaches and players agree --- but, it's like you said: the grd missed the assignment ... BIG TIME! Given JUST ANOTHER SECOND, Purdy could have had 1 or 2 receivers with real OPEN possibilities.
The amount of people who act as if this "happened to Kyle" and he was an innocent bystander is hilarious. If your O line sucks, who made the decision to have these players on the roster? If the play call sucks, who called the play? It all rolls up to Kyle, why is it such a hard concept for people to grasp?
@@ConcernedNinerFan and that one writer Grant Cohn even called him out on it last year... Asked him if it's fault his over scheming always leave the QB open and vulnerable... I guess everyone forgot that chapter of Niners history
Wrong, Burford, who rode the bench the entire game before Feliciano went out because of injury, blew his assignment. It's basic and therefore, unforgivable in the situation where the game was on the line. Kyle wasn't out there blocking, but neither was Burford! Pitiful !
Yup. Last year Shanahan lost Purdy in the NFC Championship game because he left Hassaan Reddick have an unblocked run at Purdy. Here he let's Chris Jones have a free run at his QB. Shanahanigans.
With 1:56 to go in the 4th quarter. Third and seven in field goal range , KC with just 2 time outs left , a run play should have been called to burn more seconds or a least one of KC's time outs. As it turned out San Fran just ran off 3 seconds on an incomplete pass and kicked a field goal to take a three point lead. Leaving KC with 1:53 AND two time outs. Enough time to go deep in the red zone and potentially scoring a TD. With one time out KC could not have thrown over the middle until they were in field goal range. Plus they would have had fewer seconds to get in field goal range. I think Mahomes would have been more reluctant to run with the ball deep in his territory with just one time out to burn also. That drive would have looked a lot different with less qb runs and more short sideline out patterns. Shanahan made the same mistake against the Patriots in the Falcons ill fated Super Bowl loss.
I'm a Niners fan. I wouldn't call Kyle "one of the best play callers in the game". Not by a long shot. Every game there are plays that I have to scratch my head over, usually too conservative. You're so right on the blocking scheme on that play. The Niners had enough blockers. Someone really screwed up on that play, in two places. They spend so much time practicing and are paid so much, yet can't they get this junk down? WTF? And OMG, the offsides and holdings. Don't get me started. A ref could call a penalty on any play if he wanted to. It's like players have too much to think about and forget the snap count, over and over. Every time I see a holding call I want to put their hands inside boxes and lock them. DON'T GRAB ONTO A DEFENDER'S SHOULDER PADS!!! That play is a good example of no matter who the quarterback is, he won't be successful if the O-line doesn't block.
I’m not a Niners fan but you being a Niners fan is biased, you probably watched every game and rue every missed opportunity all year. Every team had the same mistakes. The Niners did a great job all year. KC was just a little bit better in the end.
@@California_Poker "Every team had the same mistakes" is a point well taken. Screw-ups are a part of sports, and life. No blocker should ever run to where the ball is landing, however. That was a severe mistake. If you don't know where the ball is, find it before getting into the danger zone. KC didn't catch a punt with their ankle, Niners did. Play a little smarter and the Niners win that game. Though I hesitate to say that about any game where you face off against Mahomes.
@@WayneHumbleif I remember correctly they didn’t use him much in the first Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs. Niners had more weapons this time around but still couldn’t get it done. I think the problem is Shanahan.
pacheco also fumbled, moody didn’t miss a FG but a PAT and mahomes threw an INT. ofc it was shanahan‘s playcalling that cost us the game. found the casual highlights watcher with no ball knowledge, lol
Let's say this play led to a TD and Niners lead by 7. The Chief's subsequent TD drive occurred. Andy Reid likely had a special play for the 2 pt conversion. A 75% success rate for that play is reasonable. Niners would probably have lost SB anyway.
Excellent analysis. Leaving Jones unblocked on that play is just inexplicable. Fumbling the punt return late in the 3rd, and leaving Mahomes with a one play touchdown didn't help their chances either.
It easy to what you would've done after the fact. The fact is kyle sent in a play and everyone knows their individual assignment and is expected to get it done. If Burford sry ass block Chris Jones just for 1 second Jennings scores a td which would've forced kc to go for 2 if they would've scored a td.
And that's exactly what k.c. had been planning to do if the game went to overtime....kick off..get the ball second..go for the tb..then go for two. Wonder what trick play they had planned to use to get those two points. Guess we'll have to wait until next yrs SB
What? 1. Botched extra point? 2. Botched fielding of a punt? 3. Fumble inside KC 30 yard Line 4. Red Zone failure to score TD 5. Failure to sack Mahomes 6. Failure to cover 87 7. Defensive 3rd down failure 8. Adjustment failure at halftime 9. Failure to stop KC in the 4th 10. Overall game plan failure.
This happened TWICE on 3rd Down. 1st was McDuffie Blitzing on 3rd Down and this play. The O-Line was not in SYNC most of the game especially when Feliciano went down. Injuries were HUGE in the 2nd Half to Dre Greenlaw & Feliciano. Absolutely contributed to broken COVERAGES in the 2nd Half.
This play gives off Joe Burrow getting sacked by Aaron Donald vibes. wide receivers across the field wide open, but an offensive line that in this case blunder the protection scheme.
On any given play during the duration of a football game, there are dozens of “what if” situations happening that impact the outcome of the game, so it is simple minded to focus on one play, player, or event and say that “it” was the reason a team won or lost the game.
Nah. Got Corn Dog'd. KC was just waiting to sucker 49ers. Kyle not prepared, happen 2x's last SB in the end zone. Last play SF got K Dogged down there by Andy. Any NFL Head coach wud have known that play was coming from preparing and watching films. lol!
No what cost them the game was mahomes...if he's the last to touch the ball and it's up to him to win the game...well I think his record in play offs is 7 - 0.. Don't think anyone in football will forget when all he had was 13 seconds...
What I liked the most was how you said that they should stay with the basic. Then you immediately went into a rather involved explanation on how to rework the situation but your solution still required the exact same player to block 95 (who didn’t). In the end, the failure belongs to the player who messed up his assignment. If he messed up THAT assignment, he could mess up your suggested assignment and 95 still comes through.
When they got past happy in the third quarter instead of running the ball and using up clock against the best quarterback in football which I think you have to blame on Kyle is as much as anything else why we lost the game
If Jones didn't make it there Justin Reid was virtually unblocked as well would have been there in another half tick. Knowing Purdy and the Niners probably would have botched it anyways.
Do you ever recall what KS did to Atlanta Falcons in their 1st SB. He screwed up with so many bad calls in the last 6.5 minutes of the game. Worst one was a 3th down pass action instead of running the ball to set up a sure put away field goal. Falcons in that year had the best field goal kicker in NFL.
Kyle shanahan will be one of the best coaches that will never win a Super Bowl. Brock Purdy will also be one of the QBs that will never win a Super Bowl.
At the end of the day, the 49ers just got outmatched by KC. When Mahomes appeared more energetic in the fourth quarter and OT, they appeared more tired, lol.
I think they should have tried to score a td on 4th down. Field goal won’t do anything. You damn sure know the Chiefs are going to score a TD on their possession with Mahomes. 49’ers should have also elected to kick off instead of taking the ball in OT. I don’t think all the 49ers knew the new OT rules.
For me the biggest mistake the 49ers made that cost them the SB was choosing to get the ball first in OT and only getting a FG that left Mahomes with the ball last. Never give Mahomes the last drive with the game on the line. He's a special QB. And I'm no KC fan either but I know you just don't do that.
Giving Mahomes too many chances cost them the Super Bowl. When you give great players too many chances, they’re going to beat you nearly 100% of the time. Mahomes, Brady, Manning, Favre, Montana, Elway, etc… The defense held Mahomes to 19 points in regulation. That includes the 7 that they gave up on the muffed punt.
Yooo bro great video you really understand the game. I’m a chargers fan but I was rooting for the Niners and that play pissed me tf off. And the Chiefs kinda did the same play to win the game but they had their protection right. Leave me In man to man coverage for 3-5 seconds imma be open or give you a window to throw the ball to….up and coming QB’s take notes make sure your protection is tight so you can complete the play 💪🏾
If you’re gonna triple team somebody, make it jones. No idea why he assumed his teammate to the left would take him just fine and help the middle instead. Guess they didn’t study the defense enough
Think about how many times, Shannahan outschemed himself, this year he left Chris Jones unblocked, last year he left Haasan Reddick unblocked, the year before he left Aaron Donald unblocked… 3 guys that have no excuse ever to be unblocked.
excellent analysis. succinct. cuts to the chase, unlike sooo many others. Question: do we not know that the right guard was moving in the right direction (toward the inside) because the center was pulling out, though? we know Purdy is throwing right and yet the right tackle is facing right, like, worried about Kettle's man?

if only they had a bigger back than CMC who specialized in blocking. it'd be a positive if that back could catch too so there would be option plays for him whenever he was in to keep the D guessing. too bad most teams don't run a big blocking RB anymore. Buford on CJ is a total mismatch
Not buying that at all your telling me that anytime on that offensive line is just going to go ok we don’t care about jones the entire gameplan was to always have eyes on Chris jones.
Game was 100 percent rigged and it felt that way
You could easily say the blocked extra point was the play that cost them the Superbowl. It completely changed the game.
They settled for the OT play with the FG because they had confidence that momentum was on their side, and they were catching fire.
i would say when they couldn't get into field goal range on one of their drives changed the game, but you get what I'm saying
that's a statement made by someone with a 75 IQ.

@@brucewayne3602 the real error was Kyle calling an empty set on 3rd and 4.. keep #23 and #44 in the backfield for picking up blocks... have 2 WR and the TE as the 6th man blocking aka the old chip block and release option up the seam or speed out.. play..

Correction, the single most damaging play was the 49er punt returner who lacked the presence of mind to simply collapse on the ball rather than attempt to pick it up after it had glanced off another player even more guilty of poor judgement.
I agree
I guess, TAKE YOUR PICK!!! Meant to Lose!

Unblocked blitzers doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the oline fault unless it isn’t overloading the protection. But I agree mistakes were made

@@koodigocrxzy465in this case it's obvious it was the OL fault. Even Stevie Wonder can see that 😅😅

Lets be honest. Dont Fumble the Ball after that Punt. You probably win. And didnt they miss an Extra Point after a touchdown? Score that and you probably also win...

Burford came in for Feliciano who got injured in the game. But he's got plenty of experience as a starter on this line so no excuse really.

ya team def folded out there luck can only get us so far and luck has always been on the chiefs side that team has the clutch gene and you cant give mahomes the ball back to win it in OT

The 49ers beat themselves !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Feliciano getting hurt mattered also
Yeah, that's when everything started to unravel. Burford and McKivitz got to go.

I bet Jones was shocked he had a free run at the QB.
Man of all people not to get blocked. They double teamed the middle LB? That was the game right there.
That middle LB should have been whacked just by the guy in front of him like we usually do in rugby.

You damn sure know the Chiefs are going to score a TD on their possession with Mahomes. 49’ers should have also elected to kick off instead of taking the ball in OT. I don’t think all the 49ers knew the new OT rules.
It looks like tightend was open but 95 was coming fast and furious and forced him to throw it faster than he wanted to.
Great video. Does Jennings (15) ever get open?
Excellent analysis, What role does Lynch have in all of this. Does Kyle need and OC to call the plays and somebody to manage the clock?????
They Fired the Defensive Coordinator after the game as a Scapegoat and he clearly wasn't the Problem
What about the missed point-after?
Missed PAT
Punt hitting ankle
Jones not picked up
The devils in the details
Nailed it. And I like the thought of keeping it simple at times.
It was more than just ONE play. Chris Jones wrecked the whole game from start to finish.
Two fumbles & one missed extra point were bigger factors in the loss & the failure to cover Kelce in second half.
Well the Chiefs weren't exactly perfect either. I mean Mahomes throwing a pic ain't too cool. But the Niners did not capitalize on it.
