Streetlight incredibly underrated
I never thought I'd see a Streetlight Manifesto reaction. Now I just need more Ska reactions like Reel Big Fish.
ska in general is relatively unknown. This reaction is chefs kiss. Appreciation for an unknown genre
Streetlight transcends ska.

They have a live version that is just as tight, but someone must have said "We're playing live? Up the tempo by 20%" 😅
I just came from a reaction video to the live performance and the album version feels sooo slow lol. It took me a couple minutes for my brain to recalibrate haha
They are Ska punk and yes you have heard them before. I promise. 😅 Can't wait for the new album. I've probably seen Streetlight live more than any band besides maybe Bayside, The Dear Hunter or Mogwai. Idk either way they rock my back bumper and have for years 😅
The first verse is straight salsa and the bridge has a lot of salsa in it. Focus on the bass lines. The bones of the song might be ska but there's Latin influence all over the song.
Agreed, not just that but the prog vibes are so pronounced in this track. I'm 33 been listening to Streetlight forever and tbh I've been to more of their concerts than Coheed or the dear hunter and they are working on another album right now but with the passing of Matt Stewart (rest in peace brother you were a great man) it's tough to say when they will have new stuff out but it's worth diving into their discography Asia and bj they really don't have any bad music that's why they are the best. I only know a few bands that are consistently amazing and streetlight are one of them 😜

I don't see a lot of react channels doing Punk/Ska, especially deeper cuts like Streetlight! Awesome pick, awesome band!
I can't recommend highly enough seeing them perform live. The energy is hard to describe. One of the best live shows I have ever been to. I drove 12 hours out to New Jersey just to see them when they started touring again about 3 years ago.
Seen these guys live at least 9 times I wanna say? The energy at the shows is simply unmatched! Excellent choice :)

One of the really fun things about innovative punk bands like this is that they do draw inspiration from things that they've heard, but they're not thinking in that way. They're just street kids with their own agenda. They aren't thinking "Let's have a salsa section and then a jazz section." Their influences are mostly subconscious. They're just making what they would themselves want to listen to and certain sounds that they've heard before trickle in. In that way it's entirely new. Punk spirit is that fact encapsulated in art. That's why punks have revolutionary hearts. Their entire being is about challenging what things are currently understood to be in order to create something better, or at least more applicable to what is happening now to all of us. Noam Chomsky once expressed that anarchism isn't about utopia, it's about challenging authority. It's not a dream of a perfect world. It's about slowly imagining, step by step, a better one than the current paradigm has created by calling to task the people who uphold it.

streetlight is not ska, punk, or even ska-punk anymore. they have transcended. they have evolved into their own thing. orchestral ska-punk perhaps. maybe a little danny elfman as well.

Unfortunately, the long-time trumpet player for Streetlight Manifesto passed away unexpectedly last fall. RIP Matt Stewart.
In the same vein, sorry I've been away from things for a while and I didn't see this right away. My dad's health was declining and took a nosedive after Thanksgiving. He ended up passing away two weeks ago. Still pretty raw but life goes on, and he had Parkinson's dementia so we knew a few years ago that the end was coming.

They have a lot more Latin influence in their next album, The Hands That Thieve. I recommend checking out songs from that one, maybe The Littlest Things to start.
They are ska/punk they usually play with other ska/punk bands. Though the singer who writes everything says they are just playing punk the way he interprets it. One of the best live bands. I first saw the singer when he was in catch 22. He formed streetlight shortly after some clashing between half the members of catch 22. Catch 22 tried to claim all the songs he wrote as theirs and he was like, “no I wrote everything. I’m taking my music” so they redid all of the songs with the new band and the rest is history as catch 22 faded away and streetlight gained success
Oh mann this is nostalgia for me. I remember skating around the streets of San Diego to this song. Ska ruled.
