We made ours with screen bottom and slide boards to control air flow. Queen does not like too much draft on her brood. We also put screened vents on each end so heat could rise in summer and leave.
Excellent video! Thank you for sharing. I really appreciate it. How well do your bees winter in this hive? I noticed that it is a screened bottom or looked like it is. Does insulation keep the hive cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Would insulation help?
Timothy Mitchell They do pretty well in the winter in my area in south Louisiana. Our winters are pretty mild. It has 8 inches of screen down the middle from front to back. I’ve been thinking about making my next ones solid bottoms to see how they do. The way the innercovers and the lid are separated definitely helps keep the sun from heating the hive up in the summertime. I don’t use any type of insulation so I’m not sure about that. I do you know most people in colder climates use 2 inch material or sidewalls instead of 1 inch.
Have you had good results with a long langstroth hive? We only had one guy who has top bar hives in my bee group and his died last winter. I'm wondering if it's because they were spread out or bad design on the hive.
I'm sorry I somehow missed your question. They are doing good. It is still a learning thing for me. It is a little outside the way Ive been operating in my bee yards.
Watched part 1 and part of part 2 couldn't watch any more. Could not understand most of what you said and the way you use the smoker sent me into hysterics but liked the alterations to the original hive box.
I built one myself, first had same issue no airflow killed most and the rest must of swarmed off, luckily they were free bees but still sucks. So i remade to make sure i have airflow wont know till next spring though. I like how you made the top. I made all mine from 2x12, 2x4, and 2x3. was a little expensive but it should last with a few good coats of paint. How has your held up after a year?

I thought one the reasons for those long things was that it was higher and you weren’t bent over all the time?
It does have legs now.
Oh sorry I have obviously jumped the gun.
Hello Joseph
Thank you posting this long Lang hive. Can you tell me on average how many pounds per hive?
When I have good strong colonies in them they can average around five gallons of honey to pull. I also try to leave a good bit for the bees.
@@josephrawls thank you
How is this hive doing this year Joseph
I relocated this one and another long hive about fours ago. This year one of them died out but Im not sure which one it was.
THAT IS NICE
Thank you.

that entrance looks pretty small
Having the beehive so low doesn't that hurt your back? Or is it easier for you to work in the hive having it so low?
Carolyn Qammaz PA. It kind of does. The last ones I built has legs on them.
I really like that idea

We love ours, there is a great Facebook page with lot of good ideas. It is called Long Langstroth hives

Does that cloth not mess with their ability to move around the top of the frame? They don't try to propulis it down or anything?
Swifters help trap hive beetles, they do stick it down some but not too bad.
nice segmented inner cover idea... I'd use multiple cloths likely .. save on wood

Some times I get on my own nerves. lol Thanks for watching.

They are still like new.
Mr.Rawls. I am a new beekeeper (64 years old) and I liked your modified long hive. Can you or will you share the plans for this hive.
Thank you.
Joseph Rasberry Thanks, give me a little time and I will put something together. Either a video or drawing.
Thank you very much for your time. I look forward to the info.
Joseph Rasberry We have the drawing finished. Can you send me your email?

Why did you change to bigger long hive
Peter Mackey I just have two right now. I’m trying the to see if working them will be easer on my rheumatoid arthritis.
if you can, try to make one with legs on it, will eliminate bending over for the most part.
Did you make this hive
MReynolds101 Yes.
MReynolds101 Sorry, all my reply to you did not go through. I have a link in the description of this video of the plans for this hive.
