  • I got myself a Thinkpad X260 to upgrade from an X230. The only real complaint I have about the hardware is that it only has one RAM slot compared to the two the X230 has. This being my first experience with Skylake hardware...I can say that it's great in laptops at the very least.
    Specs:
    CPU: Intel Core i5-6300U
    RAM: 16GB DDR4-2400
    Storage: Intel 480GB SSD

    Lenovo has really been improving these past couple of years. The last machine(s) I owned from them were the X220 and X220i notebooks, and they were massive disappointments. I haven't been a massive fan of Lenovo ThinkPads, I always thought the older IBM ThinkPads were nicer, for some reason or another, and the X220 Series machines certainly didn't help my opinion, but I did have a chance to try one of these out, and I'm really quite tempted to give them another try.
    Anyway, excellent review, mate - between your review and my positive initial impressions with these, I may end up upgrading to these. I'm more of a Dell guy, but Dell's compact solutions are quite expensive and selection is minimal, so we'll see.

    Thinking of the x270. Is the screen size sufficient to have two browsers side by side?

    I have the T460s, and it's been great so far. I need to get the main board checked out before warranty concludes. The T460s with the Core i7/24 GB/512 GB SSD is just brilliant. I will replace this laptop in a few years, but I've been very happy with this generation of Thinkpad after a couple of decades of Macs.

    Guys, let's not lose sight of the fact that this man uses an entire docking station for his trusty Logitech track ball. That's it. No other peripherals.

    Also, on the swap thing. Unless you swap regularly, there is very little reason to use swap today. It's just wasted disk space. I would suggest using a swap file rather than partition, because for those few times you end up swapping, the performance difference is negligible on SSDs. Realistically, if you're using hibernate or sleep, it only needs to stash as much stuff as you have in RAM at the time, so creating a 16 GB swap file is more than sufficient for that purpose. Hopefully, sooner or later they will get around to making suspend / hibernate use a compressed file that only stashes dirty pages rather than all allocated pages so swap can be retired rather than overloaded for this function.

      (and I remember the days when I had a 8 MB Mac running A/UX, and needing swap to do things like edit files when X11 was running. I'm talking vi, not emacs. Emacs of course means "8 megs and constantly swapping" ;-)

    Hey mate I know this is an old video but I'm hoping to get a reply from you. How did you know the new RAM stick would be compatible with the X260? I've been advised that I have to go for a genuine Lenovo RAM stick and any other brand would likely not work.

    I've got one of these, do you find that it randomly freezes for a moment and then starts working again?
    Literally all inputs stop, then it starts again. I've got the X260 with the i7, , 8GB RAM, 240GB SSD and 1080p screen.
    Other than that, my machine is amazing!

    I'm getting two thinkpad from school. and going to fix one up for the lady and use the other one for a bed side computer. Debating if i should even keep windows on it since it'll mostly be a lenovo r60 and using linux or bsd seem much better.

    bruh...you have to splurge on a full HD screen...I can't believe you still find 1366x768 remotely acceptable. you don't need a graphical upgrade at that resolution lol.

    • @lmull3
      @lmull3  7 лет назад +3

      I got the computer for half a grand on eBay and I was lucky to get it at that price to begin with, so I'm not going to be too picky. That resolution is honestly fine next to my bed, especially on a 12-inch laptop. Where I think 1366x768 is unbearable is on the 14 and 15 inch laptops. It's just too small.

      This is a Lenovo laptop by the way... but anyway, DDR4 RAM is ridiculously fast already, I'm not sure if Dual Channel would make that much of a difference.

    • @AliceC993
      @AliceC993 7 лет назад +2

      Dual channel RAM doesn't make as large a difference as you would think nowadays. Maybe back in the DDR(2) days, but not so much now.

      Didn't insult you and you are clueless about the subject. Check the benches with a 7850k regards to ram speed and dual channel or not. Also some games love hight speed ram like GTA 5 and Witcher 3. You can also see in one of adoredtv's videos benching a 1060 or rx480 on fallout 4 using both single channel and dual channel ram and it was pretty big dif(10 or so fps and a fuck ton Stutter in single channel). Even for everyday use dual channel will feel sorta snappier.
