I just watched all five parts of this for the first time, not being aware of it before, it is a really excellent interview of an iconic actor and all around great guy.
At the 00.55 second mark I always felt that pat on the leg was in a small way david saying goodbye to Franz. Franz says, "back at ya", like good luck man.
Apparently, after walking out the door in the final scene, he left the lot and never looked back. He didn’t know that the entire crew had setup a party to celebrate his wrap. Everyone was just standing around waiting.
I'm surprised the crew was planning to do that. Things had to have been tense and at the time there was probably a fear that his leaving would kill the show and cost everyone their jobs.
Caruso leaving was a terrible decision for Caruso. It was the best thing to happen for a great show that only got better. The Andy character was so much deeper and one helluva lot more human.
That's hard to say because he was only on the show one year. If anything Franz benefited from caruso leaving more than anything. He finally got a show of his own because if he didn't carusos stock only would have gotten higher. This show literally became the Dennis Franz show 😂.
@@Ycjedi That's what he called it. I've not followed his career so I don't know what the transition gap was but Blue ran 12 seasons. On the other hand, had he stayed it might not have.
Andy's dislike of change is evident in this clip. I also like the moment with John and James. Their mentor/mentoree relationship was so great to watch. And I also remember that during his Emmy TV Legends interview, Dennis Franz was asked by the interviewer Is it true that David Caruso walked out after he filmed his last episode? And Dennis chuckled and said he did.
I dont blame him. They wanted him gone and honestly I don't think they would get a better take than this. This was amazing to say it's the first take of this scene.
true story from this final scene from caruso, which shows his true life character, imo. he walks out of the precinct for his final shot and the actor continued his walk all the way off the set, never to return. never stopped walking, lol.
Caruso received a lot of bad press for leaving the show. He saw an opportunity for movies and took it. After starring in " Jade " and other films, he returned to TV for a successful run in the series " CSI: Miami " which ran for ten seasons. NYPD survived the loss of Kelly very well.
NYPD Blue's strongest season was Season 1. Bobby Simone and Andy's later partners couldn't match the intensity of John Kelly. It was sad how David Caruso wrecked his career with an inflated ego and a very bad decision. For me, his acting in CSI MIAMI was mannered and artificial. John Kelly was his greatest role. Caruso is now retired from acting. On the Tonight Show, when Jay Leno announced Caruso's impending departure from NYPD Blue, Leno quipped, "Well, I've just got two words for David Caruso -- Shelley Long."
@@anthonylaudati I agree.....I always thought the first season of Blue was the best. I loved the John Kelly character. As much I love as I love Sipowicz, Kelly was always my favorite. I hated CSI, when Smits left I really hoped they could make amends with Caruso & have Kelly comeback as a DA’s Investigator or something.
@@anthonylaudati Caruso's acting has been mannered and somewhat artificial his whole career, it just got worse with CSI:Miami. It worked as John Kelly and he was also pretty good in Mad Dog and Glory as well as Kings of New York, but every time I watched him, I could tell, with every word and motion that he was acting. Another reason he worked on this show was because Franz, McDaniel, Brenneman, Turturro and Clapp were so great. He didn't have that parachute on CSI.
When Franz was asked in a interview did caruso quit on the show he disagreed. Stated David had opportunities he wanted to jump at, but it was more of a scheduling conflict issue. During the end of the 8th season producers quietly thought of speaking to David about maybe a return.. feeling enough time had passed. Steven said no to the idea.
It really is a shame. But I think the press at the time were not altogether correct about why David left. I remember Dennis in a documentary on the season 1 or season 2 DVD set saying "David _[beat]_ has his own way of working." In Hollywood, that statement means "he and the director/producer/writers hated each other." Yeah, he left to pursue a movie career, but he also left because he just wasn't happy there. He and somebody else on that show couldn't get along. Evidenced by the fact that he never came back to do so much as a cameo appearance in an episode. The bus never came back.
caruso over acts everything. i was glad to see this scene when it originally aired. i absolutely think this show blossomed after his exit. franz and smits were excellent and the other characters blossomed.
He transferred to the movies which the 1st 2 he did were bombs in Kiss of Death, which I moderately liked although Caruso was miscast & Jade which was an awful film, due to a piss poor script.
I’m sorry Andy - I think I can make big bucks and really take off, ya know, on the uh, the movie circuit, there. Sooo… I’ll continue to watch this show for the next 20 years while I sit around waiting on Hollywood to realize. Don’t worry about me; I’ll be a cop again on a lesser show. See ya.

This was a classic somber scene with real emotion in all the characters.
Loved David Caruso. He did what he felt was best for his career, but Jimmy Smits really did the job as Bobby Simone.

I knew he had left out of the door. But I wasn't aware about the wrap party.
Caruso has said that leaving was a big mistake.

@@aldonapolitano5979 Blue is a better show, writing and acting wise. But CSI is a cash cow, more grandiose, and a better fit for Carusso as an actor.

John kelly was the smooth and tough Detective! he stood up for Janice at the cost of his career. I missed him but Bobby Simone was a good addition.
He said goodbye to only three people; Andy, James and desk sergeant. Didn’t realize he liked the sergeant that much until now.
I was thinking that it was a show of respect, he probably said goodnight no matter who was sitting behind the desk.

He came back to New York. Changed his name to Michael Hayes. Became an assistant district attorney.
It was a sad episode when John Kelly departed from NYPD Blue it really got to me
1:02, it even got to Andy.
It was still a good show, but it became much more episodic and never hit the heights it did in that first season and a bit.
And Caruso just kept walking...

they should have moved right into miami ncis and used his name that he had in nypd
