  • In a recent practical demonstration at the SportSmith Speed Conference on June 1, 2024 at the University of Pittsburgh, I outlined my sprint-based hamstring return-to-play process using 10 x 10 yard accelerations and monitoring output using the VALD Smart Speed Plus timing gates. This could be done with other timing systems and I've had professional teams use GPS and LPS systems for managing rehabilitation scenarios, but I have found the VALD Smart Speed Plus system to be reliable and relatively easy to set up.
The emphasis in my presentation is to elicit consistent and appropriate acceleration intensities to maximize safety and accumulate appropriate volumes of work without incident. Monitoring acceleration performance helps us to ensure that the athlete can complete the sessions without over-extending themselves and placing their hamstrings at greater risk of re-injury. If done on consecutive days, you can realize much more expedient and durable rehabilitation outcomes.
