Love it when folks pay attention to portamento implementation. A lot of digitally controlled analog synths have similar flaws to those you’ve pointed out here.
Regarding the filter, that's some pretty rough nonlinear behavior. That's what I'd expect from a cheap ladder filter, the volume of the signal does affect the resonant cutoff in nonlinear filters but usually not by much unless driven super hard
It really chaps my hide even when premium products in which everything works as advertised are overpriced, but when a batch of crap gets produced at the expense of the environment in the name of making a quick buck it is beyond appalling. Brave New World. Your cat is absolutely adorable!
I wonder if this can be fixed with a patch update or something. They had somewhat similar issues with the Pro-800 originally. The envelop was too slow (or maybe it was fast, I bought it well after the firmware update)... but now it works great. Behringer seems to struggle sometimes with the digital implementation. It's the same thing with some of their more DSP oriented guitar pedals. They do such a great job at manufacturing analog components, but the digital part of the equation always takes a bit of fixing. Or is just completely off in the first place.
This isn't a synth review. It's a review of a synth that sells itself as a clone of a classic and in demand synth, and fails on so many important aspects that made that synth a classic in the first place. The 80s and 90s electronic music will demonstrate what and how the sh-101 was used for. Many of those techniques will not be able to be duplicated with this behringer knock off.
Your comment at the end is spot on, it looks awful and cheap. Behringer DO make some extremely good gear at an affordable price but they have completely failed on this one even after a second attempt to fix all of its pitfalls! I wonder if its current failures can be fixed with a firmware update?

several people have tried to mod working portamento into the original MS-1 over the years. The original used some CPU-based effect to simulate it, and it is terribly buggy, poorly behaved, and non-functional in most cases. It's sad that the MkII added an auto-portamento, which I assume attempts to duplicate the analog circuit of the SH-101, and it still doesn't really work right.

Damn this is really disappointing from behringer, I hope it’s stuff they can fix with firmware, that slew implimentation is beyond unacceptable. Which sucks because behringer can do better
OK I have the mk1 and I enjoy it, but I didn’t know it had all these issues. Since I can’t afford an original SH-101, should I consider the VST that Roland has? Does that plugin have the same problems? If you’re not a plugin guy I understand. Anyway, thanks for a great video.
The Roland SH01a boutique hardware synth gets the auto and On portamento functions 100% right. That's virtual analog (but sounds great imo) so I would guess their VST also got it right.
yep, the Glide was the main reason I sold my MS 1 again, even I liked the sound basically, but I think have enough other stuff I can do most sounds somehow.. I hoped also they would fix this in MK II, but already heard its not, I will not buy. I have many other Behringer synths, and I am basically happy with it, really cool stuff. But some things sometimes are annoying. But for being fair, also other companies did such shit. sell unfinished gear. Had a lot of experiance in such things, wich costs me also a lot of money, finally the few 300 of this was not a big loss, i sold it for 200 again. I have lost more money with other stuff like the Alesis Andromeda wich had buggy firmware, no fixing at all after years. And many others as well. So thats just like it is since decades. There are many times some hairs in the soup, the perfect synth anyway not exists I think. BUT and a big but, I think the ASM Hydrasynth is for me kind of a perfect synth in ( almost ) every case.
So this is not a clone, not even a copy, but just some synth re-producing most of the original functions and put in a look-alike case? One could argue that they make it look like the original just to benefit from it's reputation.
I think you have to set the glide values for each note of your sequence before you save it. In the video your glide knob is at 0 while you’re recording the sequence, so I’m wondering if that’s why you’re not hearing any glide during playback.
I don't think so . On the sh101 you add slides in the sequence but regardless the knob should absolutely change the amount of portamento when turned even if there are no slides. The demo shows no change when the arp and basic sequence playing. On a sh101 it slides all over the place and the knob changes the amount in realtime when set to On regardless of any programming.
Glad I didn't get my hopes up 😀 out of all Behringer clones this has to be the worst. Sold my MK1 a while ago for many of the issues that are still there apparently.
i have one from mk1 and the arpeg implementation is just broken and seems the same issue with the behringer odyssey. changing notes held while cycling doesnt work. these products are half-baked in many ways. i do like the 303. another thing is the fx on odyssey dont seem to be able go beyond 50% wet. @behringer wtf?

@@Pepijn_a.k.a._Akikaze The Atlantis is $600 though.
Quality unless mass produced comes at a price.
You buy Bugringer, you get Bugringer.
Beh Meh! Clear, concise, informative & entertaining review. Adorable kitty too ("Apple head" Siamese?) More of both please. Liked & subscribed. 🎹😻
Nah the MS-1 is stiil really good and a good bargain.
@@Heathcliff_hensel Nah, no memories and no-cc control...
Thanks for the info. I will stay away from it, AGAIN.
yep, the Glide was the main reason I sold my MS 1 again, even I liked the sound basically, but I think have enough other stuff I can do most sounds somehow..
Let kitty walk across the keys
maybe that will fix things
Firmware update???
Glad I didn't get my hopes up 😀 out of all Behringer clones this has to be the worst. Sold my MK1 a while ago for many of the issues that are still there apparently.
i have one from mk1 and the arpeg implementation is just broken and seems the same issue with the behringer odyssey. changing notes held while cycling doesnt work. these products are half-baked in many ways. i do like the 303. another thing is the fx on odyssey dont seem to be able go beyond 50% wet. @behringer wtf?
Can you do a video comparing the se electronics 3340 to the behringer pretty please
like for the review, sub for the cat
5'10 cats on synthesizers in face
Glad I kept my SH-101!
Lmao
Even if everything worked perfectly, what's the use? This thing sounds horrible.
Ha? U ok dude
Tbf yeah the raw VCO sounds a bit piercing/bad
This clip suggests buying Behringer Cat instead.....
How much did Roland pay you?
Thanks.
Thanks a lot mate. New subscriber ✌🏻
