Or he does succeed, but the guilt and trauma throughout his twenty years becomes too much for the king, and he ends himself. So, being the badass angry sparta queen that she is, decides to prevent this possible future and makes everybody bleed. Perhaps Hera wanted to know if the woman was worthy of such a loyal and devoted man like Oydsseus and made that dream happen.
