There's just something amazing about harmonizing together impromptu. For me, it's like one of those all too rare, firing on all cylinders type conversations that I find myself gleefully entranced within from time to time!
You're absolutely right. Playing alongside such a great player can be intimidating - especially while playing one of their original songs. I've watched and listened to several interviews of Bruce where he welcomes other players to play with him. I think that's what music should be about.
This has such an ethereal quality with Emmitt's dobro One of those rare pieces that keeps you coming back to well... and why would'nt you Long may your music win new converts Bruce
Hey John... Deer Dancing is from Bruce's "Circles in the Stream" CD, which I wanna say was from 1977. Its only a solo piece when Bruce does it, and its a fair bit more intricate than presented here. Its one of those "holy grail" songs wherever Bruce fans gather to play...
I never realized how much my style was affected by him wow . He is wonderful to watch and to listen too. Keep up the good work Bruce. And thanks for the great tunes.
I can’t believe up until a few years ago I thought ‘if a tree falls’ and ‘wonder where the lions are’ were all he had to offer. Was I ever wrong. Bruce is amazing. Such a great underrated Canadian artist
varsitycamplife: I don't dissagree that he's a gracious and amazing person, but I was watching for this and took it differently. I saw him intently listening to Rik as he was playing to his slide, and then when Rik got to the point realization in his music, (what the searching was looking for) 2:52? they both found it and Bruce smiled with Rik.
When i first heard this song on the Ripples in the Stream album almost 30 years ago it was a great inspiration to learn how to pick a guitar. Thx for posting this...great memories :)
I really like the foreshadowing of Bruce's interest in the Dobro at the beginning of this clip given his yet-to-be heavy use of the instrument many years later.
Bruce Cockburn has been a mainstay for a lot of Canadians who like good music. The lyrics speak of social justice and peace. All of his songs reflect that. He is also a libertarian.."I RIDE AND i SHOOT AND i PLAY GUITAR" He is a severely underrated guitarist and my inspiration to learn guitar came from Bruce Cockburn. I may be mistaken but I think Bruce enjoyed shooting IPSC. Or a similar discipline.
that tune is on an album called Night Vision...one of my faves! there is a horse running towards a train in the dark on the cover...i'll see if i can find it for you
No, it's only on the live 1977 album Circles in the Stream. Night Vision, with its famous 1954 Alex Coville painting, does have some amazing instrumentals, such as "islands in a black sky," and "lightstorm," however. Super album.
This was recorded at CHCH-TV in Hamilton on Nov 17, 1983 as one of the 26 episodes of the "In Session" series. I was fortunate to be the recording engineer for the series. That's me behind the console at 0:32.
Man, there used to be a great live version of "Wondering Where the Lions Are" on youtube from around the same time period as this video. If you've got it, I'd love you to post it.
If you like Rik Emmett and you like impromptu guitar jamming, check out some of the youtube videos of he and Steve Morse (currently Deep Purple's guitarist).
Danny Gatton, in my humble opinion was the greatest guitarist ever born, Bruce falls in at a close second to Gatton with one major difference. We can still see Bruce perform his magic. As with most things Bruce does, this song is simply brilliant!
All day long...that's some fine guitar playing :) even the "fingers got stuck" moments are delightful...I like Bruce the guitarist a bit more than Bruce the poet/lyricist...
Of course, in Rik's defense.. this is Bruce's song, and not an easy one to play at that, so I think he did rather nicely complimenting it. Still love the version on CD best. It's only on his live Circles in the Stream album, no studio version :( Hey Bruce, next time you do an instrumental album????
Yeah, they're sure enjoying themselves, but I still prefer the 'Circles in the Stream' version, it absolutely shimmers with light and life. Amazing that such a ranking guitarist not only is a fine singer but for my money the finest lyricist ever, bar none, and that includes Waits, Mitchell, Dylan, Janis Ian, Roger Waters, Allan Jay Lerner, and a handful of others - I've heard them all so I'm not just throwing away meaningless superlatives. 'Astonishing' is right, Brian l890..
Cannot get enough..1981,sat on my buns at the TSC, Memorial University, St.Johns, Newfoundland. Bruce, what a show. Changed everything.
My FAVORITE musician of all time. The world is a better place thanks to Bruce. Pass it on!
Instant magic. Bruce and Rik sound so natural and Bruce keeps eyeing Rik's playing and smiling in amazement. Simply magic.

Bruce is so gracious. Just watch him affirm Emmit with his facial expressions. He's a good man, and a heck of a guitar player.
You're absolutely right. Playing alongside such a great player can be intimidating - especially while playing one of their original songs. I've watched and listened to several interviews of Bruce where he welcomes other players to play with him. I think that's what music should be about.
Man... two of my favourite players together, and both in peak form! Sweet....!
Unbelievable conjoining of two greats!
Bruce Cockburn's guitar is an inspiration. Moreover his lyrical talent is astonishing! God Bless Bruce Cockburn.
1981....we were ALL so young!
Those smiles are golden! :) (And so is the sound.)
How I would have loved to be in that audience!!! Loved Rik then, love him still and always will! Thanks for posting!
Incredible. Finally got to meet Bruce after his Montreal gig this past Spring. What a humble super nice human being.
I am an atheist but I do love Bruce's work and "Circles In The Stream" is one of my favorite live records of all time.

Oh my LOVE those smiles. :) *sigh* go.... boys... go.... ;P whew!!!!
I can't even imagine how great they feel playing this.
I mean, that smile he gets is priceless.
Very, very nice. That is some monster guitar playing for sure. Can't get over the resemblance between young Bruce and Napoleon Dynamite, ha ha.
Great tune, I chill back with my jj and melt into the computer chair listening to this.
love the grass
That's fantastic stuff. Great guitar work.
I can’t believe up until a few years ago I thought ‘if a tree falls’ and ‘wonder where the lions are’ were all he had to offer. Was I ever wrong. Bruce is amazing. Such a great underrated Canadian artist
Hmm. Those classic cassette tapes were Lost. Unless Lucky to Find Bruce Cockburn Live (blue cover) with All his favorite A and B sides
Wonderful stuff!

Beautiful can't stop listening!

Nice. Hadn't seen this. Thanks for sharing.
I think it was first released on the 1977 Album Circles in the Stream .
Fantastic, thank you so much!!
what an awesome jam

classic! Thanks for the post.
Love how they are both looking at what the other guy is doing.
WOW!!! THANKS!!

Oh, to have been a fly on that studio's wall...
Very rare piece of footage of a young Cockburn! Got any more please post it!
magic.
WOW it has to be said, look at Bruces left hand from 3:10 to 3:26. He is truly one with the guitar.
A man with a heart and he rides and shoots (yes guns) and plays guitar. A free man. A man with a soul.
and he likes his life just fine.....
Tonic for the soul

Excellent.
Outstanding
Incredible
bruce is a living legend
"What are you gonna' play today, Bruce?"
"Whatever I feel like, gosh!"
Bruce doesn't get enough credit as a generational musician.
astounding
nice stuff. I think this piece is in the movie "Clown White" Touching movie.
Unfortunately, no studio recording of this song. It only appears on his 1977 live recording Circles in the Stream. Bummer.
Looks like it's at Manta Sound - great duo.

Magic.
As good as it gets…
Has anyone ever hear of a song Bruce did called, "everyone knows the world got the blues by the balls?" If so please post it
Wow, Rik Emmett and Bruce Cockburn jamming together! I have never seen this before. Any idea how old this recording is? Thanks for posting this one.
1981
Oh Canada!
Yes! cool :)

Those are EPIC! Steve and Rik are my #1 and 1a favorite musicians of all time. I especially like the Morse song they do Up In The Air!
Danny Gatton, in my humble opinion was the greatest guitarist ever born, Bruce falls in at a close second to Gatton with one major difference. We can still see Bruce perform his magic. As with most things Bruce does, this song is simply brilliant!
Thank you. That was just beautiful. I'd never seen or heard that one before. I'm wondering what year was that piece is from.
All day long...that's some fine guitar playing :) even the "fingers got stuck" moments are delightful...I like Bruce the guitarist a bit more than Bruce the poet/lyricist...
Ian Thornley brought me here

it might be interesting if Bruce ever did Triumph style
- a new frontier if you will
Thump!

Anyone know who is playing with Bruce?
dude it says in the description
isaac klinco
Yeah I know but I was looking for some actual information about the guy.
Rik Emmet is/was the Guitarist and lead Vocalist from the Canadian rock group Triumph.
muzzledox1
Thanks much. I'm a yank from Seattle. Not always up on Canadian musicians.
Ian Thornley brought me here.
God I miss when musicians could actually play musical instruments
I dont think so, but everyone should draw insp from Doc
Rik really gets in the way, but then I'm not a fan of the dobro. He does acquit himself, but the song is entirely changed.
He's a little bit influential on Ian Thornley's sound.
MINUNAT INTERPRET IUBESC CHITARA
