  • Listen to a story about a real trucking hero! This trucker was a trucker for 30 some years back when truckers were the last American cowboys, then he got sick and has to come off the road. Find out the success he had AFTER coming off the road getting his own national radio show telling us the stories we wanted to hear! You must hear this story.

I guess I'm too old and been retired too long, 'cause all I remember listening to is country music and occasionally Paul Harvey. I guess we all have our own "trucker stories" related to our own trucking style. I usually kept to myself and a few "CB friends" I would run across. I recently took a trip in my personal van with CB radio, and was appalled at how many truckers don't run them anymore, however, I did run across a few "old timers" and it was right back to the "good ol' days". I was glad to run right past the scale houses and only give them the 'high sign' as I went by in my non-commercial van …. what a great feeling!! :)

    *Ode to Stray Dawg*
Dispatch called and said you gotta GO!
I looked at my E-Logs and said “Hell No!”
I drove all night and most the next day
That right rear drive was thin as whey
At night the coops were closed - no pain
By day ‘twas backroads and the Hammer Lane
Then I heard, “Dawg Gone”, no Board Op!
I no longer cared about my reset or next stop
I got to the terminal in record time
But the receiver said the paperwork’s out of line
They said call your broker and work it out
We can’t take you for another two days about
I quit my job that fateful day and started home
No more Mega Carriers or Stray Dawg poems!

Thank you for sharing this touching story Jack ..... As one of those 'old-school' truckers, this story truly strikes a chord within me. Tho I've never met nor heard 'Stray Dawg', this does indeed sound like an individual who has, such as with you, most likely touched and impacted many trucker's lives .... Having been called upon to host such a prestigious radio talk-show, this man obviously touched many.
It is my hopes that he learns of this video and that perhaps you are Blessed by hearing from him sometime in the near future. Let's pray and trust that the account of his reported behavior at the TA was not an indication of a serious medical issue. How very sad that would be indeed! In closing, just hearing about this man brings back many trucking experiences of my own! So thank you again for sharing this story with us. Blessings to all from central Ohio.

I bet others liked his show too. To bad they just didn't hire someone who could handle the technical side of things. Today everything is about profit and taking advantage of people. There's to many in upper management these days and not enough people who actually do the job. The government is a perfect example.

Well sir, > I remember when Dave Nemo was the weekend AND fill-in guy for Charlie Douglas on WWL 870 New Orleans. That program was un-rivaled in it's time and filling in for Charlie Douglas was Dave's big break. And as much as we liked Charlie, Dave was no slouch, and a few of us knew he was the heir apparent ( I am not a driver - I just enjoyed long-distance listening on the AM band at night, [ DX-ing ] and l LOVED the truck-driver oriented shows that were restricted to overnights at that time.)

That's a very sad story. Hard for people never been around "puters" be experts over night.
Hopefully few older drivers notice this one. Got me thinking old stories.
Got huge question? While you on Old time trucking stories. Love know if this even a little bit true.
I heard this one for many years. Is this A true story? I am sure story got bigger more told?? . A trucker out of GA or SC/NC hauling fully loaded to CA got caught doing triple # like 165+ MPH in AZ back in old days like in 1970s, When you could turn up engine HP pretty easy. Roll the black smoke!! I don't think tires @ them days even would with hold them speeds back then. But After few days in jail, Huge amount of bail money. They made him put his whole TK & trailer on railroad car & never come back in AZ again? I think his name was Southern EarthShaker / Earthquaker or something close to that? What is the true story on this, Or Is this even a true story?? Or A bunch of Bull.

Put out to pasture cause ya can't "hack it" anymore. All while the folks making the REAL money couldn't do your job on the best day of their lives. True in trucking, broadcasting or any other business you care to name. There are a few rare exceptions. When I went to truck driving school, MANY years ago the instructors (4) were old truckers who knew pretty much everything about trucking. They took a bunch of raw, untalented, pretty slow individuals and got us good ENOUGH to get jobs, grow and prove ourselves. To say they were exceptional isn't a stretch, because most of us really impressed our driver/trainers and the companies we hooked up with. Folks are NOT used up because they reach a certain age, or because they didn't grow up with computers. In fact, society is the loser when people like that are cast aside. Sharing what they know, who they ARE is invaluable. Too often "they", the power brokers don't get it.

I thought maybe you got a stray dog to go with your stray cat. I used to enjoy talk radio back in the days when people discussed issues. Of course those were local stations and local as well as national issues with someone who was good at talking with and moderating people. When things went national, every host now has an agenda to push and there is no real discussion.
