    I bought the Martin HD 35 2018 and I love it. The bass is there for the blue grass runs, its there for blues finger picking and its a great stummer. I have no complaints. For me it is a great all around guitar. I tried the D 28 and found wanting more. I have a 1964 Gibson J45 which sounds great but this guitar sounds better then all of my guitars even my Taylor. I played them all to people with their backs turned and even over the phone. EVERYONE picked the Martin HD 35 2018 as the best sounding guitar. I agree. I love it. It's everything I wanted in a guitar.

      @@marchel9322 Did you try a lighter gauge string on it? Mine came with 13s, I put 12s on it to lighten it up. Not as much bass and so far I like it for the blue grass runs through finger style through blues like Gary Davis blues and Travis picking, Chet Atkins style. My guitar just hums a beautiful tone when I play it. I fell in love with it immediately. I have a 1964 J 45 that hums like a harp when I play it. Two different sounds from the guitars of course, but the new Martin HD35 2018 vibrates like the old Gibson. I was very impressed when I played it. Usually a guitar has to open up over time to sound that good. Not the Martin , mine is wonderful. I even had my family stay out of the room and I played different guitars so they good tell me which one they liked the best. The martin and the Gibson won. I have Taylors also. Maybe you would like a Taylor as they have a lighter sound which is very nice for finger picking. I think they were built more for that then strumming as they have an even scale on them. Not much bass, more of a lighter treble sound across the board. I have a 414 Ce which i picked over the 800 series as it sounded better to me. Not as fancy looking but the sound was there. Cheers and good luck finding your dream guitar. I found about 25 of them! :)

    I bought my HD-35 about 6 mos. ago, and I love the responsiveness of this guitar. You can buy guitars that are prettier (e.g., Martin D-45), but you cannot buy one that sounds better. I had a Greenfield G1, which is supposed to be the essence of sound quality, but IMHO the HD-35 sounds better. The top is lightly braced with 1/4 in. scalloped bracing giving this Martin a very resonant top. If you don't have an HD-35, get one!

    I've noticed that i've learned a lot from watching you videos. I'm mainly an electric gruitar player, and have never really known to much about accoustics. Now i feel like i know more. I was able to point out that this guitar was way better suited for strumming than fingerpicking judged on the sound, where before i probably wouldn't have noticed. And it felt good when you confirmed my suspicion just moments later.

    Very nice review on the HD-35 reimagined! My HD-35 is a 1997 version and has aged very well and primarily used as a finger style guitar. I was a bit concerned about 'reimagined' and thought there were going to be significant changes, but it appears that C.F. Martin in it's infinite wisdom, knows how to make changes and seemingly revert back to the pre-WWII vintage models when re-thinking and re-imagining the guitar. One thing they did improve upon even prior to the re-imagined version is adding a bone nut to the bridge. Mine has the pre bone but I have not replaced it and the tone quality of amazingly beautiful
    Thank you for this review. Martin was really my only choice for acoustic guitars and all mine are 1998 HD-35, 000-28 and a D-18V (vintage series) which they were ''reimagining' at that time, and a beautiful D-18 with mahogany tone wood and again, Martin does make a wonderful guitar and have been doing it since 1833, which is really amazing!
    Thanks again Ben Morgan-Brown for a nice review ..

    Played one of these recently at my local guitar shop and it was the most beautful sounding guitar I've ever played. The balance and bass along with overall tone was beautiful. I own a D28, love that guitar too.. but I'm considering an upgrade.

    Awesome video thanks for sharing. I bought my first D35 in 1976. Sadly I lost it in 1983. I saved for years to buy another D35. (I wanted to replace what I lost.) I bought a new D35 in 2001. I love it. I still have it. But due to health, I can't play it as much as I'd like. Can you do a video on the D35?

    You said it has scalloped bracing but it does not. The d-35 has straight bracing and in the reimagined series it’s simply forward shifted.

  • @oaktree1628
    @oaktree1628 5 лет назад +1

    I would think that the scalloped, new forward shifted bracing would mean that you don’t need to put that much effort to get a big sound. The old HD35 didn’t have forward shifted bracing, whereas the 2018 model has forward shifting.

      Hello! When did the forward shifting on HD 35's change. Mine is year 2000. The area around the sound hole is slightly sunk in toward the fret board. No other issues. Intonation is fine.

    Thank you a very balanced critique.

    • @robertnewell5057

      Basically, the HD has scalloped bracing and herringbone trim. The scalloped bracing is felt by many to give a more open, airy tone. The trim is just cosmetic. There's no H35, it's the D35 you are thinking of. The D35 has non-scalloped bracingand is said to have a more punchy, focused tone. The trim is not herringbone. Both the HD and the D have 1/4 inch bracing, and I believe are the only guitars in the Martin range to have this (all the rest are 5/16).

    1/4 inch bracing, should be easier to finger pick than the 5/16 braced dreads. With 1/4 iinch bracing light guage would work perfect, same as the triple zero. Use acrylic nails and rattle the pictures off the wall! No need to baby it.

  • @robertnewell5057
    @robertnewell5057 4 года назад

    Nice, detailed review, Ben. What was the first tune extract you played in the vid? I understand your comments about dreads and strumming, but mine, from 2013, can be fingerpicked so lightly (my touch is similar to yours) with custom lights, as another commentator mentions below. Also fine for flatpick lead and rhythm, but there better with lights (just). I like a real low action, which mine has, still with no buzzes, even when hammered. I'm getting on a bit now, and back in the 70s Martins were famous for high actions (not that I could afford them!). I''m lucky enough to have 3 Martins now and they all have low action and came perfectly set up. I'm left-handed, and so I wonder if lefties get a better set-up, given that all the guitars are played in the factory before they leave, and there are obviously fewer lefties and so fewer people doing the setups on them. I think it's good they don't include electrics, as this is such a personal decision.

      Hi Robert - the first piece of music (over the intro) is just a little thing I made up for the channel, and the other two examples are just chord progressions I played on the day of reviewing - not songs really!
      A dread can definitely word for fingerpicking and you don't always have to play them hard, but for me I normally find that it's when they start working a bit harder that they sound their best.
      Thanks, Ben

      @@AcousticReview Thanks Ben. Well, it was very nice and reminded me of American Primitive pieces! I'm always surprised when people (not you) criticise dreads for fingerpicking - tell that to Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, CSN, Bert Jansch, Eric Johnson, John Fahey, blah, blah. Thanks again for the review.

    I baught my d 35 in 2005. It gets better every year. I also have a hd-28. It is a 2009. They both play about the same but the D-35 is a boomer. I had a l r baggs anthem installed in the 35 but when I play unplugged I always play the 35 because of it's volume. The HD-28 has a fishman ellipse pick up in it but I like the LR baggs better just because of the controls and permanent mic mount.
