Honestly, as someone just getting into the hobby, I learned more about painting in this video than your much longer and newer video about painting. This showed how to do it rather than repeatedly telling us it's ok to use cheap paint.
You ever done those same tiles but with a sand texture for a desert setting? I'm getting back into d&d with my wife and kids and she's DMing and currently has us in the desert.
I went to the hardware store today to get some xps foam, and I expected it to be cheaper in big sheets (because you warned me) but since i have a small car i figured i could just eat the cost difference for the convenience of a smaller sheet... but the difference in cost blew my mind. The 8x4 sheets were 62c (usd) per square foot, and the small 2x2 sheets were 1.79$a foot! *smash cut to me drop kicking a huge foam sheet in the parking lot so it'll fit into my prius*
dude you are amazing. also my gf now is a big fan as well, because you have made me not want a 3d printer any more. i have a long weekend ahead of me, thanks man these are perfect.
I definitely try to make my terrain displayable more than disposable....kind of bridging the gap between cheap d&d crafts and high detail war game terrain.
After many years without foam since no one near me sells it, I finally got a huge scrap piece and these dungeon tiles were the first thing I made and it was so much easier and way better looking to throw these on the table instead drawing and redrawing maps in D&D
You can also use readily available 1/4" thick MDS panels which you can obtain at any Lumber and Building supply store, edgres can be routered to obtain a bevel and the squares can be cut by either Table saw or a good quality jigsaw fitted with an adjustable butt plate or square to help keep your cuts straight, or alternatively if you have access to a Radial Arm saw that would even work better for small pieces like the 3" x 3" tiles. Texture can be later applied to the surface with either MILIPUT, or POLYFILA type plaster and a few simple tools, you can experiment with a number of such tools till you find a technique you like and works for you. For realistic cobblestone or stone like patterns you can also get Vinyl coated fabric embossed wallpapers, there is a huge selection of these papers on the market but be prepared to pay a fair amount as a double roll costs about $60.00 CDN. Good luck!
Just made my very first dungeon tiles. This was so much fun! I had a bit of issue with cutting them with a x-acto knife, might be the blade I used, it was pretty cheap. Came out pretty rough but it added to the look. Thanks for the videos!
I am a new DND player! I'm 36 years old and just got into it. I definitely see myself as the DM type. I live in China so i have bought so many figurines and Minis. Super Cheap here! But now i want terrain! so i looked into videos on how to make these. I HAVE FOUND MY NEW HOBBY thanks to you!! your videos are great man. I wish i could go visit you and be your apprentice ha ha. I love your work. its simple and effective and detailed! you have an amazing skill man. I totally support you and your videos !
After years of watching your content and DMing, I finally took my courage and crafted ! I started with these simple tiles to represent my dungeon encounters ! Thanks a lot for your videos and help :)
Ever thought about making your game tiles with two different sides? Maybe just two different colors, or even two different textured floors to use in different settings.
I've thought about it...but for some reason didn't. Mostly because I like building this stuff and have room to store it so I'd rather just make more steps. Not the best solution for everyone, but works for me.
Although an old video this technique still holds up especially with dollar store foam. I will show pictures when I am done thank you for your videos. This may be the first tutorial I actually have done from a youtube video that's how easy it is. I also got most if not all my supplies from the dollar tree here in the US.
Thanks for doing these videos. I've been obsessing of these for it feels like at least a year now. I just started GMing the last few months for Star Wars, but looking to do Pathfinder soon, so I'll be putting these to test soon. I would say that if you ever run out of things to make, that making some scifi terrain for people the play Star Wars, Starfinder, etc would be GREATLY appreciated. :D Oh, and i just bought the foam cutter from your site link! KEEP UP THE AWESOME WORK
I've been following you for a long time probably since this video or maybe a little earlier. But now that I have a group to play with even though its once or twice a month ( damn adulting sucks ) I finally get to make these and my group supports it. They went out with me when we got the xps and other stuff.
Like these tiles. I initially liked the walled tiles, but the more I watched some of your stuff the more I have come to appreciate this simple aesthetic.
Big thank you for this episode. This summer we needed a new craft project for the kids and they had a great time working through the process of creating basic tiles. They both came up with a few techniques on their own to add character and it was so great to see them really get into it.
When I decided that I wanted to use 3D maps for my gaming I was very intimidated and thought I would have to fork up a butt load of cash to buy them. Your videos have changed that, thanks for the help and love the intro man. Keep doing these video they are really helpful!
that's the idea, trying to save everybody a butt ton of money! if you like the vids and want them to continue, consider taking a tiny bit of those savings and putting them towards my patreon to help fund the channel ;)
Thanks for this bud. Just finished my first tile and it looks amazing. Used washes for minis but never thought of doing it for terrain. Great idea! Mixed up a batch and it really made the tile pop. Thanks again!
Awesome tutorial. I've been trying to figure out how to make dungeon tiles for my games and I think I've settled on this method. Once I've got a few pieces, I want to make a full board with different tile heights for Krosmaster Arena and I think this would work nicely for that.
im new to d&d and i was always amazed by your builds but now that i learned how to play and played a few games i think i will try making some of your buildings myself
I used this video to make my very first set of dungeon tiles today :) they turned out better then I thought. I used foam core from poster board, backed on card board. I used your technique of cutting 3x3 boards I also made a 6x6 to represent a room and a few 3x6 for hallways.
Me and my best friend have been fans of The Adventure Zone and, more recently, Critical Role, for some time and have finally managed to get a group of friends together to play with us. We've only just finished our fourth ever session, but you can bet that we all go "Is it Saturday yet?" as soon as we finish, because it's a blast. Because my friend (the DM) is already pretty preoccupied with the story and everything, she often gets stressed out when she is forced to make maps even though she thinks it's fun. So, since I love drawing and crafting and could use the practice, I've started a project to make her 2D map tiles (they're 2 by 2 squares for now, I may ajust that if it's too small) on which draw and copy many different corridors, ground textures and layouts and then double-sided tape them onto 2mm cardboard and cut out the squares, so she can pick and choose the best tiles for every encounter map and combine them like a puzzle. I am really tempted to do something 3D like this, but that's a whoooole different project that I'm not sure I can afford the time for at the moment, sadly. Because I know that once I start with something like this, I get obsessively excessive and won't be able to get anything else done anymore. These videos are an amazing source of inspiration though, and hopefully one day I'll have the time to do such a project.
Will be making these soon. If you consider watcher requests, consider more advanced dungeon tiles in the future, steps and doors etc. Keep up the good work.
Wyloch's Crafting Vids I have an question for painting as you and black magic craft ate good painters I want to add more to my tiles since the dungeon is icy what should I do paint wise to show the ice or snow?
Great methods explained and filmed well - you've just got another subscriber! I've been a GM since 1991 and I always dreamed about making my own dungeon tiles. Damn, perhaps I'll finally do it now. Painting and modeling isn't a problem for me (Warhammer Fantasy), but having a cost- and time-effective way to build large quantities of tiles was... until now.
Dude, thanks to you, I started making my own dungeon tiles with this video, started few months ago. I've been a dungeon master since high school and now my game table looks awesome. I even did the cave lake tile with epoxy resin. Now I'm really looking forward to reach the weekend so I can build your new rock golem. :)
Just made some of these thanks to you and this video. I learned a lot in the process, and will definitely be getting a hot wire cutter soon lol. But you get REALLY great results with this method. I am so stoked to use these for my home game with my kids! Thank you!
So I couldn't find any extruded foam that wasn't in an industrial sized pack anywhere nearby, so I used expanded foam instead. I was really concerned when I was using the ball point pen to make the indents, pieces were flying off at odd angles, but by the time I black washed it, holy cow. The expanded polystyrene makes the tiles look a lot more granite-like and the dry brushing really POPS, especially if you go against the grain on the sides. Thanks for the help. Made 4 tiles just as a test run but now I'm super excited to make the full set!
Cool, just be careful as the expanded foam is brittle and can break apart. If consider cutting some squares of thin cardboard (cereal box) and glue to the bottom to make sure they don't break in half. That's one of the main reasons for using extruded, it's incredibly strong.
Great video. Clear & concise. Straight to the point. Definitely subbing. For some of us coming from a tabletop background and not a craft background, it would be nice to see a video how you make the black wash, as well as what other materials one would need when starting off. Such ass the tools of the trade. :) Just an idea for more simple and useful content you can put up in between the more complicated content.
Literally just got into D&D about a month ago. This is awesome. Definitely subscribing and watching all your videos. Thanks for the info brotha! Your customs look sick!
It really is a very easy project. Honestly the hardest part is cutting all your tiles into proper squares first, from there it's just boring repetition :)
This is very cool I have a friend of mine who has made a bunch of buildings and stuff out of Styrofoam and he says he got all his ideas from this site I'm so happy I found it I want to start doing this for myself
I have made some very similar to this myself, and they go very well with the drunkens and dragons style pieces. can't wait to see the more complicated ones,so many ideas for encounter areas.🏰
Dude your vids help me a lot I just started my campaign with my family and they don't imagine it as much so I thought why not show it to them so I watched your video and here I am I found a vid about making dungeon tiles that does not bore me thx very much
I made my own set of tiles after watching this video, and I'm not artistic/crafty in the least! Thanks for the video and looking forward to more resources.
You sir just got a new subscriber, this is an amazing idea (first video i have seen of yours). And a lot cheaper then spending roughly 600 to 700 at shops for none painted tile sets made of just resin, and looks way to similar to the rest that you get.
Hey BMC- thank you for teaching me how to use the XPS foam for dungeon tiles! I finished my HeroQuest board build and thought I'd share it with you: ruclips.net/video/iyiFt3KUMb4/видео.html
Your channel has inspired me! I just got home with a trunk full of XPS and a big tub of mod podge. I was wondering - I can't afford a cutting table, and I really don't have the tools to build one at home, but have you tried that Woodland Scenics handheld cutter? It seems like if you moved the little collets down to 3 inches from the ends and held the thing upside down with the ends on the table, you could get reasonably straight cuts without needing a table and fence.
Handheld cutters are great for free form cutting....but terrible for stuff like making square tiles. I actually cover this in next weeks TPK video, keep an eye out.
Thank you so much for this, I'm not sure where to buy this sort of foam in the UK but I got hold of a couple sheets of thin craft foam and spent my day off doing what I could with it. Only just gotten into D&D, haven't got minis or even a proper group yet but your videos are so inspiring I just couldn't help myself! Looking forward to seeing what else you come up with in the future!
Places like B&Q, Travis Perkins etc, hardware stores, they sell sheets of it in the name of "Insulation Foam", I've found them anywhere between £6-£12 per sheet, and you get loads of 3x3 tiles per sheet. Hope this helps!
I'm sure you've noticed many of your viewers are beginners and not from a craft background, myself included. I love the simplicity of this and how much utility it has! i seem to have gotten foam board, a very thin kind and i thought it would have worked just fine, but when i try to paint it (i admit i added some water to the paint) black, it really didnt stick. may i ask you how you paint your tiles black, and for some beginner tutorials please? Do you use acrylic black paint or another substance entirely? Thank you for being a great part of the RPG community!
Yup, I just use regular black acrylic craft paint. If you are having trouble with adhesion you can mix in a bit of watered down white glue or mod podge to your black paint.
SWEET tiles! Great intro video to help with multiple projects🤓. You can add Future Floor Wax to your washes/paints to give a "mottled" look. Sometimes do that on armor
Love your videos, boss! I made a tile set for myself and put magnets in. That was about a week and a half ago. Today I put them together to show off to my kids and the magnets pulled themselves out! I used hot glue...is there a better adhesive? Or did I not bury them deep enough. Also, I added them after I painted (didn't know I wanted them) so does that make a difference as well? Thank you in advance man! Keep the rad videos coming.
It would probably work well to add a layer of craft foam to the backs of them for a more surface protecting feature. Plus if you hit the underside with at least a layer of black, you'll add to the longevity of the tiles.
Personally I'm not that concerned as they see light play on a felt surface, but if you are going to transport them or you have rough players I'd do something to protect the bottom.
Hey BMC, thanks for the new methods of crafting! I have been a long time fan of DM Scotty and found your channel about two weeks ago. After using them for a few decades, I have gone grid-less baby! Anyway, I wanted to inquire about the video you said you were going to make a tutorial video on the large water piece used during the viking ship video? Is it out yet or have I missed it's location somehow? Huge thanks for all you share and the work you do! As you stated in the sewer tiles stream video, it does take a while to create these tutorials.
Thanks! And glad you found the channel. I think you'll find going gridless to be pretty liberating. As for the water board I havn't gotten around to making it as it's kind of a messy task and I don't need another one, but it's in the back of my head that I promised I'd do it.
I have an entire website dedicated to that. This is an old video and may not have mentioned it. Check my essential equipment page on www.blackmagiccraft.ca
If you have any friends or family that work in construction, or any nearby smaller residential construction sites, just ask them to pick up spare foam for you. I work in construction and I can't tell you how much of that stuff we throw away. Mostly large pieces leftover from cuts, and sometimes just whole sheets that go unused.
My walmart doesn't carry the exact label you use of Minwax. but they have other cans like the Helmsman Spar Urethane (clear satin in the green can), semi gloss polyurethane (in the bronze can)...and a couple other gloss finishes
Great video, thanks! Beginner's question: What do I use for black priming the tiles? Black acrylic paint? Spray? other? is it ok to use cheaper colors (unlike miniatures paints which are expensive).
So something I learned while attempting these, using the 1/2" pink extruded foam I got from Home Depot -either I was supposed to remove the very thin glossy plastic membrane covering on the foam or I am doing something very wrong. I think it's the former, so now I'll be using a tweezers to peel off 288 1" plastic membranes from this foam I've already put down a grid on. Learn from my fail!! (Or, tell me I'm being too ham-fisted and this stuff should be staying on)
THIS IS A VERY OLD EARLY EPISODE. I have done a few hundred more since and I suggest you check some of those out. My techniques and videos have progressed considerably since this early effort. What is the foam and where do you get it: ruclips.net/video/0_vV6X3iHs4/видео.html

Where have your videos been all my life! ♡♡♡ this is amazing and I'm definitely going to make a bunch of tiles for my upcoming campaign.
Just made my very first dungeon tiles. This was so much fun! I had a bit of issue with cutting them with a x-acto knife, might be the blade I used, it was pretty cheap. Came out pretty rough but it added to the look. Thanks for the videos!
We made a large batch of these and are in love. This basic project success really gave us the courage to do more hand crafted items for our game.
Very nice. The thick blocky look from the half inch foam really makes it look like old castle flooring.
I agree :)
dude killin it

You inspired me to craft my first set of tiles. Love watching your vids thank you for the great approachable feel you bring to crafting.
Oooo chamfering at 3:36 great tip
It really helps to make them not look like perfectly machined pieces. I do this with most foam sculpts, even more so with wood beams.

I am using this method from now on. I believe this method to be the most versatile.
It has some drawbacks and limitations compared to other tiles, but overall I like it the best.

I know it's been three years but i wanted to ask about how many tiles did you make and if they were enough? Thanks!
Blow my mind with the foil trick
You sir just got a new subscriber, this is an amazing idea (first video i have seen of yours). And a lot cheaper then spending roughly 600 to 700 at shops for none painted tile sets made of just resin, and looks way to similar to the rest that you get.
Thanks. Take a look over my other videos, lots of stuff for you to try. Also got a BASICS series if you are just starting out.
Good episode. Definitely struggling getting a smooth cut on the pre cut without hot wire cutter...
Dude- this is perfect! I'm building a 3D Hero Quest board. Very inspiring. Thank you!
Hey BMC- thank you for teaching me how to use the XPS foam for dungeon tiles! I finished my HeroQuest board build and thought I'd share it with you: ruclips.net/video/iyiFt3KUMb4/видео.html
Another absolutely amazing video. I am new to your channel but love what you do 🤙🏾
Excellent video. Easy to do. Anyone can do this.
Thanks!
Thank you.. awesome Vid.. never done this before.. followed the vid.. looks killer.. i appreciate the time you put into making these vids.
Great technique. I wold love to see a more detail tutorial for preparing the black wash :D
Hmmm, already second request for that since posting this. Guess I need to do it :)
Wow your Videos are awesome 🤩
Keep Up this great Work
Thank you so much for this, I'm not sure where to buy this sort of foam in the UK but I got hold of a couple sheets of thin craft foam and spent my day off doing what I could with it. Only just gotten into D&D, haven't got minis or even a proper group yet but your videos are so inspiring I just couldn't help myself! Looking forward to seeing what else you come up with in the future!
Cheers
Places like B&Q, Travis Perkins etc, hardware stores, they sell sheets of it in the name of "Insulation Foam", I've found them anywhere between £6-£12 per sheet, and you get loads of 3x3 tiles per sheet. Hope this helps!
Cool video. I like your simple approach to dungeon tiles. I'm thinking of doing a hybrid dungeon tile that can be played on or used in a diorama.
Thanks Kev, I think simple is good...but also think simple can still be stylish.
I agree. If you are going to make an effort in producing something, make it interchangeable and stylish. In that way it is not so easy to throw away.
Love your stuff mate! Absolutely brilliant!
Dude, your channel is awesome.
Thanks :D
Black Magic Craft :D
I am a new subscriber! I am so inspired by your work!
DOPE!! Adding this to my To Do list.
It's a perfect project to start your insulation foam building addiction :)
Great video man! gonna start binge watching now lol
Ok so I missed what kind of foam you use and where you get it from? just curious if you have time
your channel is sooo good im 11 and am making huge D&D boards for my homebrew games with friendsq
Great vid! Also, your collection looks amazing!
thanks :D
Thanks, I've been meaning to try a wash using pledge or something similar just havnt gotten around to buying any yet.
Those tentacle pens were sold at my store, but I wanted to make a wand out of them - never considered them as terrain. Now I must buy more pens!
:)
dude how are you not at 100k subs yet? this is amazing information!
Tell 80,000 friends about the channel!
Wonderful content. Thanks so much!
This is fantastic! So thorough.
glad you like it :)
Wish this had an everything I use section, but otherwise everything I was looking for! Thanks :)
Awesome... I just found you today... will definitely work to catch up ... and learn.
Thanks!!
Get craftin!...welcome to the channel :)
My walmart doesn't carry the exact label you use of Minwax.
but they have other cans like the Helmsman Spar Urethane (clear satin in the green can), semi gloss polyurethane (in the bronze can)...and a couple other gloss finishes
Genius as usual. You should develope it more with the board gamers, make tiles for like descent and the d&d board games
That would be cool. Also now that I have the basic tile archived I can do vids on more interesting ones.
+Black Magic Craft chip board stencils are amazeballs.
You should make a vid in the future of making a sample dungeon with your tiles to show how to use them to a great effect.
Mola un montón lo que haces!
They look great
Great video, thanks!
Beginner's question: What do I use for black priming the tiles?
Black acrylic paint? Spray? other? is it ok to use cheaper colors (unlike miniatures paints which are expensive).
Epoch Tiles makes something pretty cool and affordable like this
Solid work.....DM Scotty and you have given me lots of ideas. (and that other crazy guy from Australia). LOL !
lol, dog aka crazy guy from australia.
(Or, tell me I'm being too ham-fisted and this stuff should be staying on)
Hey I am grateful to you for that ep.
Thanks Jeremy!
Really Impressive!. Thanks for the ideas!.
