    I recently heard Bruce Feldman state that Kelly did nothing for NIL and that UCLA was basically offering NIL pennies on the dollar vs other B1G schools. I thought he was exaggerating. But, clearly not. Sounds like Phil Knight was able to mask Kelly's failings at the CFB HC level. Kelly ran a great grift for over a decade. Impressive.

    I know Kelly left Ucla in the lurch, but if I were a bruin fan I would have wanted more than a position coach who'd never been a head coach (or coordinator) at any level. That's a tough ask, but I think in many ways it speaks to how the university views its football program. As far as the players reaction to the announcement, I can remember the exact same reaction from USC players when the interim tag was taken off Clay Helton.

    • @TheElmasv74

      The short notice left the with little options. Besides, no real well name coach would want the UCLA job, we've been through this before. We need a diamond in the rough, we will never get a superstar coach unless he is home made. It's UCLA football, not Alabama, Ohio State or USC. It is just the way it is. And if we get a home made great coach, we will always be at risk of losing him to the NFL or a bigger program.

      @fd8251 5 месяцев назад +4

      No, the spend on football has increased dramatically since the 80s. While spend on UCLA football has increased it is nowhere near the growth of spend by other colleges. Can't compare the 80's. It's like asking if Harvard or Yale can ever get back to the top of football like they were in the 1800's to early 1900's.. or if UCLA can get back to the Wooden days for basketball. Different times.

      @ reidawg72 yeah that’s how bad it was. It only took a year for fans to give up on him completely, but somehow he lasted 6 and still didn’t get fired. Trust me, under mora the rose bowl used to have 75K+ in attendance every game. I was there for chips first game against Cincy and in 100+ degree heat the crowd was bumping with excitement and ever since then it’s been downhill. I used to make it a priority of mine to see multiple ucla games a year and would drive 400 miles plus to do so. I haven’t been to one single game since that cincy game in 2017 ans it’s all because of chip and I know a ton of other ucla fans who feel the same way. If he was Oklahoma’s head coach he wouldn’t have made it to the end of year 2.Btw, Oklahoma demolished us with Jalen hurts that year. It was absolutely embarrassing and to think a man with that much hype could destroy it all in less than a year is truly impressive in the worst way possible

    • @reidawg72
      @reidawg72 5 месяцев назад

      @@tnekeroom9897 I hear ya. Very well said. I went to a Big12 school so I'm a neutral as far as Kelly at UCLA goes but I made a point to watch that Cincy game in 2018 as I was excited about what Kelly could do at ucla. I remembered how ucla had been competitive regularly under Bob Toledo and even great under Terry Donahue for 2 decades bf that. I thought Kelly could get them back to near that level. Heck I remember the much more recent great comeback by Mora's Bruins vs the Aggies (Texas A&M Aggies - not New Mexico State or Utah St Aggies lol).
      So, I must say I was astonished at how bad the Cincy game was. I believe there was a Michigan transfer playing QB for the Bruins. After the game I thought, well maybe Kelly's doing the "year zero" thing. ie, we're gonna suck for a year but wait til you see what we build. That didn't happen.
      I know how it is to have your school suck repeatedly despite hopes for improvement. I endured Baylor of the late 90s thru late 2000s. It's even hotter in Waco to have to watch a garbage team lol. Hope Foster can turn it around and bring back the excitement.
      Edit: ok I looked it up. It was Wilton Speight from Michigan. He got hurt that gm and was replaced by DTR.

      Chip absolutely ruined ucla football. Look at the difference in attendance between mora and chip. Night and day. We actually had top 15 teams under mora that weren’t better simply because Oregon and Stanford were in their golden era. Chip can’t make the same excuse

      @krohnutzgoff7326 Mora's teams were not close to the 1960s, 1970s or 1980s programs. Guerrero was hoping to achieve that. Guerrero gave him a decent amount of time. Didn't happen. So they gave Chip a shot. Didn't happen. Now, Foster. Not gonna happen. Common denominator is UCLA. Great school. Most important thing. As a sports program in football and basketball, just run of the mill - occasionally basketball is in the elite mix.

    Lets be real! I have been a fan of UCLA football for over 3 decades. And the truth is that this program has been damaged since Terry Donahue left the program. Bob Toledo did have some success, but it was with Donahue's players. With the exception of a few mediocre seasons sprinkled inbetween years over the last two and a half decades, this program has been trash. It hurts to say, but it's been the truth. The Irony of it all is that UCLA still consistently puts a fair amount of talent into the NFL every tear. Yet that is not equalling wins in the cillege level.
    Some say hiring Foster is Carl Dorrell part 2, but I like to think it may be more like the start of a era like Terry Donahue part 2. This hire resebles the Dongue hire in so many ways.

    ucla has never really been committed to football. They benefit from being on one of the top states of football talent. Kelly didn't do any more damage to UCLA than any of the Coaches who got up and left the teams they coached, and believe me there were quite a few, he had some very good assistant coaches but when other teams came calling for them UCLA would not put up the money to keep them, so really Kelly didn't have a choice, don't blame all this on Chip, blame most of it on "tight-fisted" UCLA powers that handle the purse strings.
