    I did this with my 2013 Mac using a SATA 2.5 ssd via an enclosure - been amazing since.

      Faster drive makes a huge difference, the nvme in the mac studios are insane, 7000MB/sec

      @@JTechWP I was given an older iMac (2012-13?). The internal HD was failing & overheating, so I decided to try booting from outside. Even though it's only got USB2.0, it boots up quickly & runs fine from an external Samsung T5! I wish it wasn't such a monumental effort to open the iMac, or I'd install an SSD internally.

      @@tracylf5409 IFix it do good kits for taking the screen off, takes about an hour. If the iMac stays in the same place then the External SSD is a good solution

    I was dreading opening up this old beast to replace the drive. I like your solution. I'll give it a go. Compared to my new M1 Mac mini this 2017 iMac is showing it's age but I'd still like to keep it around!

    I'm gonna give this another go - failed last time I did this for my 2017 Mac 27" - do you recommend the same NVME & enclosure or would you recommend a different one in 2024? :)

    The same NVME memory would perform better if used on the PCIE inside the iMac but it takes more surgery to do that. A fusion drive is quite inferior to pure SSD.

      To install internally requires cutting the screen off, removing motherboard and speakers. Sintech pci adapter. I may do it next year and fit an internal SSD too. Waiting for 2021 iMac to launch with M1x processor 🚀

      @@JTechWP I’m in the middle of adding a 2TB Samsung 870 Evo Plus NVMe and 1TB Samsung 860 SATA SSD. I am waiting for the SATA cable as the one I got was wrong type. Make sure to use proper tool to remove the display. I’ll wait for the iMac with fast enough GPU to kick out gaming PCs. Maybe M2...

    Nice video! I was thinking about doing the same thing (same setup and everything). 2 questions for ya. 1) What USB Hub are you using attached to the iMac? It looks great. 2) how hot does the enclosure get?

      USB Hub amzn.to/3f7dQfR is the Satechi Aluminum Type-C Clamp Hub Pro with USB-C. The enclosure never gets hot, it's warm to the touch. I run the imac on average 8-10 hours a day. Editing videos for clients, Lightroom and photoshop plus creating websites. Its well worth the upgrade :)

    Thank you for the useful video. I have 5k iMac 2017 and its too slow now. It takes 1 minute to open Chrome :(
    I want to know which is better solution-
    1. Booting up from external ssd. In this case, where are the macos updates are installed?
    2. Adding up extra RAM modules of 32GB.
    Also, I use Adobe photoshop, Lightroom and Davinci Resolve heavily. Which is the ideal solution for me?

      Id go for the faster SSD drive as a priority, that will make a bigger difference in load times and read/write. Go for more RAM later

    I do have an internal 1TB SSD on my iMac (APPLE SSD SM1024L), but I do not have enough space for it to be my working drive for video editing. Will your external SSD option provide the same speed as my internal drive?

      The NVME will be faster, SSD's typically max out at 550MB/sec. The NVME will hit around 3200MB/sec using Thunderbolt 3

    Boooting is taking 50sec from Ssd external Sandisk pro …. Normal Fusion Drive internal took 30 sec … both were new frehs installation …..

    The occasional need for a hard reset is quite the deal breaker.
    I'd rather pay for screen-removal + ssd install (on the inside). The cost of the ssd enclosure is about the cost of the repair.
    Or might just do it myself.

      If you take the screen off, get a sintech adapter, put in a faster NVME and SSD, that’d be the way to go. Bigger job but if the screen is off it would be a big speed boost.

    What happens if your iMac goes to sleep and wakes up again? Would it require a reboot as the external SSD would have lose power during the sleep.

      I think the latest enclosures should wakeup. I disabled sleep on mine to be on the safe side. Sold the iMac now and got an M1Max Mac Studio.

      When the mac went to sleep the drive would not wake up, it was a firmware issue with the wavlink bay, i believe they have a new firmware out and its been fixed, got a mac studio now and sold the imac.

      Should be faster, mechanical hard drives are pretty slow maybe 100MB/S, SSD's around 550MB/s

    Hi, there, I was thinking of getting an iMac 2020 and because a SATA SSD cannot be installed internally, a TB3 enclosure with NVMe SSD is my next best option as a contingency plan in case the soldered SSD on the iMac 2020 fails. But it looks like this setup is not so suitable for my use-case as demonstrated in your video?

      As long as you disable sleep in settings the Thunderbolt NVME is great. Sold the iMac 🖥️ and got a Mac Studio now

    Its much more efficient to get a nvme adaptor and physically replace the existing drive inside the machine. That was you dont have to worry about the machine going to sleep and crashing. Also one less drive to worry about.

      I did look at that, its for sure the better option but figured alot of people wouldn't want to cut the screen open and take out all the parts to get to it. Sintech make a mac to NVME adaptor.
      Sold that setup now and got an M1Max Mac Studio with Studio display and 42" 4k hdr Oled monitor

      Did you install the latest Mac OS ? Ventura, the first time you boot it takes a while to optimise. Select the boot drive as NVME. Drive is plugged into thunderbolt 3 port ?

      @@JTechWP I made the process with Monterey before Ventura came out, but the problem is the same with Monterey or Ventura.
      The NVMe is selected as boot drive and is connected through Thunderbolt.
      The performance is better but the booting is way too slow. It takes more than 4 minutes to start.

      It bypasses the internal hard drive. You only need the NVME enclosure, NVME drive and the Thunderbolt cable

    Off topic (slightly), but does refer to a speed issue: helping someone who has a 2017 iMac but Photoshop is stating to run slow. Do you know of an eGPU that works well with this set-up? Cheers!

      Sonnet EGFX may be what your after, check before buying to make sure it works. Other option could be get an M1 Mac Mini, Astropad and use the Imac as a monitor

    Great video! I have a 2017 21 inch iMac and about a year ago I upgraded its RAM to 32 GB. It was really fast and responsive until the Big Sur update. Now I really regret not upgrading the NVME and the HDD of my Fusion Drive… I can open my iMac again, it is not that hard but it takes a lot of time, so maybe I’ll try using an external drive. I have 2 questions. Is the boot time any better compared to the Fusion Drive? And, if you deactivate the sleep mode, does it also freezes?

      The NVME external drive is way faster than the Fusion drive, boot time is about 4 times quicker with NVME, software loads faster too. I havent updated the firmware on the enclosure but it should be fixed by now on the current models or you can get another Thunderbolt 3 enclosure. I havent activated sleep mode. I let the screen go to sleep but not the drive. Getting a Mac Studio soon with HDR monitor, be selling the iMac this year.

    Is this worth doing on a late imac late 2015 ? Also buying the parts, can you boot from this drive everytime you start up your imac?

      Hi David, I would recommend going for a USB - SSD drive, boot from the SSD, this will be faster than then 2015 fusion drive

      It was the recommended format at the time of making the video. If I was doing it again with Catalina I would go for APFS

    Why not just order some adhesive strips take the computer parts not very difficult as videos on all online. Replace to 32 GB flash storage with a 500 GB or a 1 TB M.2 drive and get 3500-3500 read write

      Sintech make a Mac to NVME adaptor. I may well take the screen off and fit the NVME internally and a new SSD drive. Waiting to see if the new iMac 🖥 pro will be announced this spring, planning to get that this year.

      The wavlink wasn't available in all countries so looked at other options, as long as its Thunderbolt 3, NVME, 40gbps you'll get the maximum bandwidth out of the NVME drive. There are some new Wavlinks out now. Which country are you in and I'll find the right one then send the link ?

      Hi Alex, you could take the screen off strip down the motherboard. Sintech make an apple to nvme adaptor for around £15. Fit the nvme internally. I would also fit a bigger ssd if you go down this route :)

      No overheating, been rock solid since the day i put it in the enclosure. The sleep issue i need a pc with thunderbolt to update the NVME housing but dont have one. Its not really an issue, i disabled sleep mode.

    Great video! I have a question; I have a 2020 iMac 27'' (v 20.1); the last bit in the video about the leaving it overnight jamming and having to reboot... Does it only do that if you install it with the app; or if we do your install it's fine to leave to sleep?? thanks!

      The quick fix is : when you boot, hold the Option key until you see a drive selection. Then select your NVME drive, it should work okay from that point onwards with Mac OS 12. Not found a sleep fix, so i disabled sleep mode, dont put Hard Drives to sleep or screen, black screen is okay

    Hey I was about to buy these expensive thunderbolt external SSD drive for using with my new MacBook Pro. I want to transition my video editing as well as my physical Apple photos library to one of these external drives. This way I can easily edit video and pictures on the go. We have iMacs as well as MacBooks. Tired of being stuck to just one computer. So I wanted to know if you have long term experience using these build it yourself SSD with NVMe as well as using thunderbolt? I hope to use an enclosure that some say don’t get to hot in their reviews of other enclosures I have seen. Other concern is this thing leaving heat marks on furniture like wood or even if it’s sitting on a sofa. Don’t want to burn the cloth. Your thoughts?

      mine is on a wooden desk, turned on for about 10-12 hours a day, no burn marks. It gets warm but not hot.

      @J Tech WP Thanks for your reply. Hey I have a late 2013 iMac with a 3TB Fusion HHD with of course the 128SSD that is with that. Would I be able to do something like this for mine? I realize yours has better port as I believe the Thunderbolt 3 port came out in 2015 and so you would have that connection. My specs are four USB 3.0 ports, dual Thunderbolt ports. This means I only have Thunderbolt 1 at 10Gbps. I also do need to have that 3TB of space so I would want to know if you think i can do this would I need to use 2 different HDs (one larger HDD drive and a 1TB SSD) or would you just use 1 larger 3-4TB SSD? If you say yes to all of this. I am not sure how to fully do what you did in this video. Meaning I am not sure if you showed the basics of how to install the Apple OS Operating system onto the external drive. Your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

      @@carsutube USB3 is 10Gbps so i would go for a big SSD drive and boot off that. You should be able to do a normal OS install onto the external SSD drive. My install failed cause it wouldn't install on the thunderbolt 3 enclosure so had to use the recovery mode install. Let me know how you get on

My iMac is working fine but is getting a bit old and want to move to an external SSD to get everything transferred over before the internal drive fails. I was told I can do this by someone else the same as you did. They did tell me that on start up I would have to hold down the option button to be able to choose the external SSD as my system each time. Thats no problem if thats the case. All I care about is being able to do this. I just hope the speeds will still be better than the mechanical fusion drive inside over USB3.0. My only question is once I am booted to the OS system on the external drive. Will I then be able to access the internal HHD to grab things off it. Kida like having a mounted disk image as if the inside HHD is plugged into the computer and mounted to access it? I also was thinking of migrating my whole system to the external SSD so I can keep all the settings and files and so on. Is that also possible? Thanks in advance. I just wish I had more video steps to follow on all of this since I am a bet more of a beginner than what you showed in your video. LOL Hopefully you would be able to help with this.

      It's good, really good, way faster, exports on 4K video are about 20x faster

      You might be better, taking the screen off, installing an SSD drive inside, alternatively get an External SSD, install the OS on the external then boot of that.

      It looks like it was one time story that it was super warm. I'm observing enclosure all day and it's much cooler . I have Silver Monkey enclosure with termo strip and radiator. There was no instruction how to assemble all together, it doesn't exist on producer web side, but somehow I figure it out. There is no problem with waking up after sleeping mode. So out of Samsung EVO 970 with 3400 and 2500mb/s + enclosure 10gb/s I have around 930mb/s for read and write.

    Anyone have insight on the rather significant discrepancy between his read/write speeds and the specified read/write speeds for the drive? Specs, per the amazon site are 3400 MB/s (read) and 3000 MB/s (write). He was getting 2400 MB/s (read) and 1900 MB/s (write). That's a 30% drop in read & a 20% drop in write!

      Hi, I think its because you lose some speed through the NVME enclosure. The drive is capable of the max speeds but the housing isnt. Still alot faster than Fusion drive ;)

      The NVME is considerably faster when opening apps. Ive booted the same mac on the fusion drive and it feels super slow after using the NVME

      @@mikevarney405 The external NVME will be faster, just make sure the enclosure has Thunderbolt 40GB/sec bandwidth, the USB C ones are limited to 10Gb/sec

    I have a late 2015 iMac, is there any hope to soup it up? Apple won't allow upgrades, grrrrr. Not happy with the Fusion Drive. I need more power editing multiple cameras on Premiere Pro.
    4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 32GB 1600 MHz DDR2 with AMD Radeon R9 M390 2GB.
    Can you heeeeell-p? Don't leave us 2015-ers out. I wish Apple would at least allow an upgrade to SSD.

      Hi I suggest getting a fast SSD drive and connecting it to the thunder bolt port. Boot from the SSD. If you want super fast speed you could take the the screen off, replace the Apple NVME drive with a Samsung NVME using a Sintek adapter, remove the mechanical hard drive and add an SSD internally, ifixit sell a kit and new screen strips. Hope that helps

      You could get a Thunderbolt 2 NVME enclosure, that should work the way.

    How will the speeds compare to a built-in SSD drive? I have a 2017 iMac which was spec'd out with the 4.2GHz i7 and also an upgraded 512Gb SSD, just wondering if there'd be a notable difference in that setup.

      SSDs are around 550MB/sec NVME is 3000MB so quite a bit quicker

    I have an Imac late 2013 with only USB 3. I've looked for compatibility with Nvme and 2013 Imac's but couldn't find info. Anyone know if this model of Imac will benefit from a SSD drive like this? My Imac does not have Thunderbolt 3.

      The USB3 will be limited to 5Gb/sec, If you used an SSD you should see about 5 times faster speeds. Thunderbolt 3 is 40Gb/sec. SSD is faster than a HD

      I dont think the 2010 imac has Thunderbolt. You could get a USB enclosure but the bottle neck will be the USB port so it would not get the speed

    Is the enclosure not bottlenecking the drive here? Drive is rated at 3000MB/s, enclosure 2200MB/s. Could be even faster :)

      Yes, I noticed straight away in the speed test, the drive is capable of more speed. Still worth using the enclosure, the iMac feels rapid and very snappy.

    WARNING: Monterey bricks your intel Mac with a Firmware upgrade that means you can never run it on anything older than Big Sur. I was happily running Big Sur with an external USB High Sierra SSD available as well for using my 32Bit legacy applications on my Mid 2017 Kaby Lake iMac. After a PCIE and SATA upgrade I installed and booted from Monterey and then dumped it to go back to Big Sur and found that everything below Big Sur gave the error message "this OS is too old to run on this computer". Monterey Also killed the bluetooth side of the wifi card. Wifi still works thank goodness. A Bluetooth dongle now takes up one of the USB slots.

      I have a 2017 iMac 21.5" 4K I purchased with Ventura that I reset it and installed Catalina. Although it came with the Apple 512GB PCI-e SSD. Bluetooth works fine as multiple devices pair and work with it.

    Thanks for the video Jon. However, when I plug it into my MBP 13" 2017 (Catalina) it does not show up in disk utility. Once it gave me a not enough power (or something like that) error. Tried on my 2017 imac High Sierra and it also did not recognize it. One time it did recognize it and when I formatted I got an error "The chosen size is not valid for the chosen file system." Any ideas what to do? Thanks.

      Yes, you will need a Sintech adaptor as Apples NVME uses a different connection, also need to take the screen off and take the imac appart to access the nvme. Ifixit do a kit with cutting wheel. Id also fit a faster SSD drive to replace the mechanical hard drive while the imac is in bits. Let me know if you do it and how it goes ;)

Am i getting the same speed and performance? Also won't there be any problems with other connections? So simply asking will it work just like an internal ssd as I prefer not getting inside the imac?

      @@aistisstrelciunas2446 If you are fitting the NVME internally might as well remove the old Hard drive and fit SSD. Fusion drive has an NVME and a hard drive. If you dont want to cut the screen open just use the method in the video. NVME thunderbolt 3 enclosure, fit the nvme drive, then install the OS. Use APFS not Mac OS ext journeled.

      Hi David, Format using APFS. your max speed will be around( Read 2400MB/s, Write 950MB/s) will feel faster :)

      Thanks for this. It worked. Everything seemed to go normal and smooth. But after a while now, the mac keeps shutting down and restarting. Saying "your computer restarted because of a problem''. Any recommendations in how to fix this? Tried to use first aid too.. highly would appreciate your help

      When it restarts it redirects me to the desktop page and after 10 seconds the screen freezes, turns black and restarts everytime. I am using a macbook pro 2018 2.3ghz quad core

      Just had a look for Thunderbolt 2 NVME enclosures, not seeing any. Booting off an SSD via USB would probably be quicker than the internal drive

      @@siddallj True. I just tried booting my iMac from an external 1TB Sabrent NVMe SSD drive and its a lot faster than the internal Fusion drive. I might just open up the iMac and install an NVMe SSD (When i feel courageous enough :)) Thanks for replying.

      SSD makes a big difference. If you are adding an NVME to the imac internally check out Sintech, you will need an adaptor for the NVME as apple use different pins to standard NVME drives. Internal SSD will also help. Let me know how it goes and good luck with the build :)

      @@JTechWP Thanks! I've ordered the upgrade kit from OWC and also the Sintech adapter. I will be doing the SSD and the NVMe upgrade. I have a WD 1TB SSD and a Sabrent Rocket 1TB NVMe SSD. Just thinking about the disassembly of the iMacs internals already.makes me sweat :)

      Hi, 2015 iMac uses Thunderbolt 2, an External USB SSD drive would be the best option. The install of Mac OS is the same, but use APFS as file format when formatting the drive
