  • In this video, I show and talk about how my fountain pens and inks for June have been working out! We look in my ink journal [old stock Bond Travel Gear 68 gsm white Tomoe River Paper] and I talk about the ups and downs so far with these pen and ink combinations. The topic for discussion today (in the library) is mainly notebooks and my choosing a notebook for my Pen Hobby Journey Documentary Journal ---- I had a lot of fun choosing the notebook and VERY SPECIAL THANKS go out to pen friend MS who sent the Bindewerk A5 Purist Black Notebook (lined) that I chose for this project. The paper is really fountain pen friendly. I've numbered the pages, created an index and started some collections in it ... as soon as I'm ready to I'll share the set up and my plans for the notebook!!!!
    Here is a list of pens, inks and notebooks discussed:
    1. Benu Euphoria Pink Champagne (Goldspot Exclusive) B wtih J Herbin 1670 Fuchsia de Magellan - both the pen and ink were purchased with You Tube channel ad revenue! (NOTE: 3rd fill with this pen I chose Diplomat Orchid and soon will try another pink: Krishna Winter because I'm about to finish fill #3.)
    2. Narwhal Original Plus (Vac filler) Gold Ocellatus B with Sailor Jentle Granade (pen from pen friend AW and ink from pen friend TC).
    3. TWSBI Vac 700 R Iris B with TWSBI Royal Purple (pen from pen friend MB).
    4. Moonman Q1 Clear EF with Diamine Oxford Blue (pen from pen friend MS).
    5. Schneider Coed Black M with Graf Von Faber Castell Stone Grey
    *** REMOVED DUE TO INK CLOGGING: Lamy Al-Star Ocean Blue 1.5 with Pelikan Edelstein Golden Lapis (pen from pen friend MS - ink sample from pen friend CS). * I will follow up about this ink and pen -- it appeared to have a shimmer clog when I went to write with it for this video * (NOTE: this pen clogged up even with a nib swap to a B nib so it was a fail and I will look for another pen to try this ink in.) ***
    6. Hinze Custom Blue Storm B with Pure Pens Coronation Blue (I won the pen from Larry's Fountain Pens giveaway years ago - ink sample from pen friend MH).
    7. Jinhao 159 Rose Gold + Silver B Knox nib (nib from pen friend CS).
    ADDED TO THE LINE UP SINCE LAST WE SPOKE:
    8. TWSBI Rose Gold and Black Eco M with Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Brown
    9. Jinhao 82 clear with glitter and gold trim OBB Knox nib and Diamine Meadow
    10. Jinhao 82 pink and white with #5 fude nib and Diamine Claret
    Also mentioned: TWSBI Eco M Cement Grey with Graf Von Faber Castell Stone Grey for comparison
    NOTEBOOKS:
    Bindewerk A5 Purist Black Green Notebook lined 90 gsm paper (found they are carried at thepleasureofwriting.com (gift from pen friend MS)
    Official Bullet Journal in green dot grid A5 120 gsm paper (my next bullet journal I start July 1st)
    GoodINKPRESSIONS 68 gsm notebook (purchased at local Barnes & Noble)
    Hobinichi cover from Galen Leather in Brown (zip closure) and I talked about the Office Depot reporter notebooks (not good with all fountain pens but if you test and pick and choose they can work ... or you can use ball point or certain gel pens)
    Thank you so much for watching and supporting my little channel. This community connects me to awesome like minded people and I appreciate each and every one of you so much!

    on reporter notebooks: leuchtturm and midori both make them. leuchtturm's is just called reporter (sewn spine), midori's is under the "diamond memo" range (spiral binding).

    Another great video, Chris. I just want to second @Marcellhobbs comment about the Pelikan Golden Lapis ink. I, too, put it in a Pelikan M200 with a Broad nib (actually the Golden Beryl one so you can see the shimmer and shake it as needed) and it works really well in that pen. I’ve seen a lot of comments from people having trouble with the ink flow of Golden Lapis, but hopefully you will find a pen that it works well in because it is a gorgeous ink with a great base color.

    After finding nibs you like, and will use, not getting many more bodies they fit in can be easier. Unless it just reaches out, grabs you, and won't let you go. 😂 Can make not buying easier.
    Great selection of both pens and inks! Not really a fan of pink inks, myself, but for the right person I'm writing, or the right event...😉
    The Schneider is probably dryer because it's a student pen. Less chance of disaster usually only from the mind or activities of your average 10 year old. 😂
    Gonna probably dive into the 3 broad Esterbrook nibs I currently have, soon. Mostly for either writing letters, or signatures, as it's still a lot of the smaller spaces of doctor's forms, for me (have 3 specialist visits within the next few weeks, so the extra fine will be needed. 😉) Really looking forward to playing with the 3968 Esterbrook broad nib.
    As for notebooks, the Pen+Gear from Walmart can be good. I have a kind of A5 sized hardbound one. Perfect for everything? Probably not, but as good as any from Vietnam and India. Works okay for me.

    Hi Chris. I always enjoy your progress reports. I still use the A5 Leuchtturm1917 for my bullet journal but I usually use a fine nib. I really prefer white paper so I may have to switch when this NB is done. Thanks for the tip about the NB in Barnes and Noble although I like the grid for a bullet journal. I like Clairfontaine paper. I use a lined one from Goulet for my weight loss journal. That folio from Galen is beautiful. I’d want to use it all the time too. Good luck in your search for the perfect NB for it. We’re expecting a major week long heat wave tomorrow in upstate NY.

    Chris, keep buying those Good inkpressions at B & N. Those are fine. But I bought 2 from Etsy 1 52 gsm and 68 gsm. The 68gsm felt like I was writing on some type of grit, it felt somewhat smooth. My fountain pens said other wise. So I will have to use the 68 gsm with ballpoints or rollerballs. Was not real happy with that experiment a little bit of wasted money there. Chris, try to find a Daiso store near you if you have any.

    Hi, Chris! Your leather zipped Weeks-sized case is very nice, but i would think that the metal coil binding that is at the top of reporters notebooks might damage the leather on the othet side. Just a thought.

      Hi Marilyn -- I was a bit worried about that at first too but I carried one in it for quite awhile with no problems. Of course I have stuff sticking out of the top pocket that probably cushions the leather on the other side. I'm not sure about LONG term. How do you get your Bujo to last a whole year? Thank you for sharing.

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  Месяц назад +2

      Hi @BlushnBlue -- I don't really try at it and some years I have only gotten 9 months but for the past few years it has worked out perfectly for July - June in one book. I like that very much because the fresh book in July is perfect for me. I do one spread in the front with 12 boxes across the 2 pages to jot in birthdays and big deadlines. Each month I do a monthly spread but I don't do weekly spreads I just do daily task lists that jump off my side monthly task list from that spread. If I want to take notes or do a special indexed collection I do it. Now, when I stop completely with the Weeks next year .... I may end up not going a whole year in my bullet journals. Or, I may just do the family doctor appts in a dollar tree monthly calendar and see if that works. I don't actually need a weekly list as long as I'm on top of appts for my cats, husband and sisterinlaw. I think there were more pages in the original Leuchtturm 1917s the new 120 gsm paper ones have fewer pages which I noticed the first few books I used. :)

    • @BlushnBlue
      @BlushnBlue Месяц назад +1

      @@ChrisSaenz13 Yes, the original has 40+ pages more I believe. I have to buy 3 Bujos a year but I do create weekly spreads so I guess that takes up the greater amount of pages. I would like my journal to go 1 year but I guess I alread have this setup that I love and if I force it I may not be happy with it. It is not so bad buying 3 notebooks a year if I behave and not try others along the way...lol. Thank you for sharing your secret Chris. Have a great week.
