  • In this 2 part series, professional bonsai artist David Easterbrook is presented with an intriguing challenge.
    A massive Ficus benjamina needs a restyling and a repotting but before jumping into this mission he needs to separate a different species of Ficus that was added on top of it.
    In this masterclass David shows us how to plant a bonsai on a rock by selecting the right rock, protecting the roots, applying peat muck and adding layers of moss to maintain everything firmly in place.
    The resulting Green Island Ficus bonsai on a rock is spectacular.

    I'd be interested in knowing what is the immediate after care for this project. Does this go into greenhouse, outside, etc?

    • @BonsaiSociety
      @BonsaiSociety  Год назад +4

      I address this in part 2 and 3 of this mini series. This rock planting and the big Ficus will be kept in a warm greenhouse at a friend's place to ensure that they will have better chances at recovering after such a drastic intervention. The ideal time to do any sort of repotting on a tropical tree would have been the warmest summer months but I needed space. Hopefully I will be able to update you guys in just a few months

    As my first attempt at root on rock failed, you video provided me with a lot of useful information. Can you suggest native Canadian species apart from junipers that would work well for root on rock

    • @BonsaiSociety
      @BonsaiSociety  Год назад

      I don't think junipers are that great for root over rock. Pines are good, spruces and larch (actually Nick Lenz did many amazing with larch specimens)

      You have a valid point. I will definitely create a few shorter bonsai tutorials and presentations that can be digested in a more reasonable timeframe. That being said I don't necessarily want to sacrifice too much from the demos / masterclasses because some people truly enjoy the details. That's where many of them learn
