Gargoyles Remastered Review - Nostalgically Frustrating

No one asked for Gargoyles Remastered, and I can see why. While the 16-bit gothic graphics are gorgeous, the gameplay does not hold up regardless of what style you're playing in. The combat is dull, the platforming sections are frustratingly difficult due to bad controls, the bosses are laughable, and the experience is over before you know it. Although the added modes and rewind feature are cool, I'd say this is a Remastered release for the die-hards only and not a reason to play a game that you think you missed out on.

As a kid I loved this game. Playing it again today for the first time in more than 2 decades I found it really frustrating
It's amazing what we found fun and engaging when we had no other alternatives. :)

You didn't seem to be using the grab function on the shielded enemies. B button.
Only thing I wished this game had was weapons as you progressed but to me it's a good one, and getting the original included makes it work its current cheap sales price.
A modern game that goes past the second season would be amazing. The chronicles can stay dead though. Dont forget to add keith david.
It would be cool if they adapted the post-season 2 comics.

I remember renting this for Genesis because I was a fan of the show, and Genesis games had slowed to a trickle by the time it was released. It was certainly better than the Deep Space Nine game, but it felt less like a game and more of a headstone for the Genesis as an actively supported console. This is what you'll be getting from now on, if you get anything at all.
Actually there's no need for a button mashing for certain enemies. That female viking that you shown dies after single throw or a leg drop and extra hit. There is a different approach for almost every enemy.
I remember watching a friend brother playing this when i was like 7 and frustrating sums the game up perfectly 😂

Poor remaster and you know disney will defintely be "modernizing" the live action remake.

original game: high contrast moody visuals with color pallets that shift based on the lighting conditions.
New game: flat unshaded visuals with no color shifting.
Appreciate the review! I’m happy that the game is back for many to play and I know most will hate it since it’s very punishing at times and is bit clunky, but I always loved the game and still have my original copy.
I had the same problem of not knowing if I was hitting my enemies.
Oh god that menu is tragic haha. When I played this game originally, I didn't mind it too much but the biggest thing is the awful audio for attacking and hits. It's not satisfying for the reasons you mentioned. I could forgive almost everything else but that was what killed it for me.
I would do anything for something like this to be done with magical quest with Mickey mouse

I just started playing it and it is so hard. It took forever to get past the first stage. I did it and found that grabbing enemies made it a little easier but jumping so far has been the worst part. I bought the game because of watching the show for the first time and loving it, but I hope it gets better.😅

Your first second of your clip is where I got stuck. Thx. I don't know why I bought this as I hate Disney and this game is probably too hard. Also, don't even like Gargoyles. I wish there would have been reviews before the game was released which is BS. The good thing was it's $15. The bad thing is I spent $15 I won't get it back.

I finally got lucky and broke through it. Not sure how I managed it. I'm going to hate this game. The old graphics look cool, but can't really see what's going on. The new graphics look better but are bland. I wish I would have bought something else. I thought this was going to be better. The combat is aweful.

It is playable via backwards compatibility on XBOX One and Series X/S if you have that avenue available.
We already had one and the original is available everywhere through the Disney Afternoon collection

The updated graphics just look like such a "mobile game" type of setup to me. They really sort of feel wrong.
Agreed. I see what they were going for but it just looks kinda cheap. On the other hand the chunky Genesis pixel art has held up really well and still looks great so I'm glad they still have that as an option.

The Goliath Chronicles were, but really, nobody needs to see those episodes.
Not having the other gargoyles, playable, not featuring most of the characters from the show.. (Goliath, Xanatos and Demona are ALL you get!) This is a train wreck, honestly. SKIP IT!
never understood people obsession with nostalgia I think I'm immune to it and this remaster doesnt look good. I think the only good remaster of these disney games is DuckTales - Remastered.

I don’t use the rewind function BECAUSE I’m too good.
Rewind doesn't make it any easier, just means you have more chances to fail because of the difficulty. If it's taking me 3-4 rewinds just to make one measly jump, it's pretty hard.

There is no usage of cel-shading in this game.

@TubePlasma Yeah there is the cartoon version. Once I paid attention in the menu I saw the game gives the player the option of original version or the "remastered" version and that is where the gamer can switch back forth between the two different appearances.
