Yeap, 14 years ago my Mom , brother and I went on a trip, and my Mom lost her passport, but had 4 or 5 other pieces of ID, while my brother and I had everything. This was before the passport laws. On the way in it was fine, but on the way back with the Canadian guard it was a battle, he didn't want to let us back in, even though he had proof that my Mom was a citizen and had been there since 86 and my brother and I were born there and had Birth certificates, health cards, passports, etc.
eventually they decided to let us in after conferring.
Just to put it into perspective, the American guard took about 10 seconds reviewing us and wished us a great time and let us through without worry or hesitation.
I can only imagine it is worse now.

We were only four people there was like ten of them. On the way back to canada I did not have that problem. It took them 2 seconds and then they let me go in.

I mean, in the few cases where you have to stop, the "border police" officer just waves their hand like "Go on already, i'm tired of you people.". In the other cases you're left guessing "Wait, are we still in Germany or is this the Netherlands already, somebody look at that sign over there!".

To get into Albania, we had to bribe the guards, to get into croatia was just a normal border exchange, and then I didn’t know whether I was in in Austria or Germany for three hours at one point. Then to get into England I had to show proof of purchase for my hotel, proof I was a student, tell them what my job was, and show them an itinerary (so it was lucky I made a rough one up weeks before). Fun fact: Vancouver, one of the so called “nicest” cities has a deep history of racism.
There were numerous race riots in the previous century fuelled by anti-immigration sentiments, particularly against Japanese and Chinese. The city government enabled this action and provided the rioters with food. Japantown and China town had to literally barricade themselves to prevent bloodshed. Like the US, Canada was only recently a “nice” country.

I'm not sure about the aboriginal situation but the thing you're talking about applies mainly to immigrants. It's called Loi 101 and basically, unless your parents have studied in English schools in Quebec all the way to high-school, everyone has to attend school in French. What it does is that it forces immigrants to send their kids to French-medium schools till the end of Highschool. Once high school is over, you can study in whatever language you prefer. A lot of immigrant kids choose to go for English-Medium Cegeps. But they can still choose to attend French-medium ones. I, for one, find that it is a useful law because, in Quebec, unless you know French, you just can't make it. This law may be controversial but, in the end, it's been more helpful than many immigrants like to admit.

We were visiting family once in Canada and on the way back home, we got stopped by the border nazis. My 6 or 7 year old nephew was asked where he was born and he answered "In a hospital" and we all laughed. The border nazi was pissed! "This is NOT a laughing matter!" he told us... 🙄 oh puleeze....

      1. Get mugged
      2. Get shot for looking at them
      3. Get shot by a cop for smiling at them
      4. Get raped
      5. Get stalked and suddenly death

Actually when I was living in VAN/BC in 1989 (I"M PERSIAN) my friend bought brand new jeep from dealer but his money was delayed from U.S so he was short 3000$, he asked me if I can lend him money till next Friday, that he could pay and I went to bank ,got the money, gave him 3000 cash, no check or anything in return!
my Canadian friend was shocked, and asked you just gave him 3000$,just hoping he pays back?!!
then I explained the culture, that when you know someone and trust them, there is no need for check! he asked why and how?
told him if he doesn't have the money to pay, check is not gonna bring my money back,
and if he has the money and doesn't want to pay, nobody from our people will make any deal or sell or buy anything from them!
so you don't throw your reputation and income away for 3000$!
he just didn't want to wait another week to get his car and I was same age and understood his feeling
my Canadian friend were shocked when three days later he came back with money and he said it arrived to my account few hours ago! so here you go and thank you!
although I came to live in different country and culture, but my Canadian friend got culture shocked from us

Love how the comment section degenerates into a rant about Targets miserable failure in Canada. I say, Target was never meant to succeed in Canada, they just noticed we were taking it for "granted" when travelling in the US, so they gave us a big ol wake up call.

@@patrickmulroney9452 Yep, Target couldn't figure out how to build a distribution network in Canada to keep stores stocked. It's larger by area than the U.S. and the population distribution is completely different. Going to a Canadian location was the equivalent of clicking "I'm feeling lucky" on Google.

As an American I much prefer going into Canada and talking to Canadian boarder patrol. Getting back into America I feel like I’m guilty of something. Also pretty sure of all law enforcement US boarder patrol is paid the least and has the lowest job satisfaction, it not a good situation.

Border... hardly. Im American, 15 years ago used to get a bit sweaty when I went through immigration in Alberta. Since then I’ve been to all continents, multiple countries in Europe, ME, all of Asia Pacific... let me tell you! Canada still makes me a little sweaty. Their immigration guys are pretty dickish. Still, I do like Canadians - I like the duality.

My experience at the border has been the complete opposite of what he's joking.
Americans have always been very polite, kind, friendly and respectful to me. It's the Canadian customs officers that pull my car into secondary evaluation and tear it apart, keep me in a seat in a hallway for hours on end and then question me several times by several different wannabe super cops playing a game of dumb cop /even dumber cop... But instead of getting riled up like they're obviously trying to do by attempting to provoke me by being rude, crass and insulting in their insinuations, I outclass and outsmart them for fun -because I'm obviously a thoughtful person and law abiding citizen who does not put up with their totalitarian attitudes. I'll answer all their questions as succinctly as possible. I will not elaborate and usually keep my sentences from one to five words... And I like to be "friendly-hostile" by pretending that I do not know the difference between answering a question directly and answering a question with a question as much as possible.
Ex.(really did happen in secondary) Cop:"are you transporting any illegal goods across the border?" Me"would I go bother with following the laws at the border cross if I didn't follow the laws regarding illegal goods?" Cop:"can you answer the question directly?" Me "yes" cop (confused I didn't answer his previous question)" answer my previous question" me "yes". Cop(annoyed)"no, not that question asking if you can answer the question directly, I want you to answer the question directly as to whether or not you're transporting illegal goods". Me:"...." Cop: "why aren't you answering?" Me:"you didn't ask me a question, you just stated that you want me to. I can't answer if there's no question." Cop: "PLEASE answer this question directly: are you transporting illegal goods across the border?" Me: "I'll need the entire list of illegal goods so I can determine the answer to that question" cop: "drugs, weapons, stuff like that!" Me: "...." Cop:"oh my god, are you transporting drugs or weapons or anything like that?" Me:"..." Cop: why aren't you answering?!" Me:"you didn't ask me" cop: "yes I did" me:"no, you didn't" cop: "then who did I ask?" Me: "You asked God. I'm not God, I'm Warden." Cop: "no I didn't!" Me: "when you asked "oh my god, are you transporting drugs or weapons or anything like that" you asked God" cop: I wasn't asking God!" Me: "you don't think you were asking God when you named him in your question?" Cop:"why would I ask God?!" Me: "Can you answer the question directly?"... Cop: "...." Me:"..." Cop:"you're free to go."
