I loved doing it … I was lucky to get amazing customers. But my safety is more important. Plus the money has gone way down. It’s just not worth it anymore. I won’t come back until things change. And now if the Ride Share companies are threatening us if we “cherry pick” they will deactivate us …. We’ll it sounds like I have made a good choice to walk away.

2 weeks ago, I was waiting for a rider in a very rough part of town and a guy 2 houses up comes outside with an AK-47 under his arm, he walks out looking the other way down the street, and then walks back in. Me having lived in the hood before, I know that nobody ever telegraphs what they are trying to do. He may have been looking down the street but there was nothing to see. I think he came out to see if I was an enemy of his and then realized I was just a Lyft driver…….This is the type of stuff that you can expect doing rides in bad areas. I shouldn’t have risked it going there, but it’s a shame that Uber is EXPECTING drivers to take these kinds of risks.

I drove for Uber regularly from 2018 until the pandemic. In 2019 a Uber driver and a passenger were killed by a passenger who was high on PCP. Uber never mentioned it to the drivers in our area and if a dropped a ride off in that area I would immediately go off line until I got back into a safer area. I drive in the DC area and I driven a few times recently and every time I end up in DC Uber tries to send me to a certain part of town that I have no business being in at night. I decline the trip and Uber pings me again with another trip to the same area. As you said we are independent contractors and I should be able to pick my fares as well as maintain my safety. God knows Uber won't.

All I get is trip radar requests, which forced me to do airport trips because there was a queue and I can guarantee trips. Now, the airport queue will do trip radar and drivers who were BEHIND me in line can accept it and take MY airport runs. I am averaging $10/hr before expenses because I am forced to wait at the airport for hours.

Wait times increase as drivers decline or cancel rides. Its the only way to increase wait times. Drivers decline because the trip isn't worth the time, the cost, or the loss of positioning. Drivers cancel because they didn't feel safe, smelled weed, suspected a drunk to vomit, or an animal to shead animal hair all over seats; which isn't easy to remove. They cancel because they cant get pass security gates due the riders forgetting to message their codes and not responding when drivers try to contact them. Drivers cancel because of wait times after arriving at the pick up location, or because the pick up location is wrong. These are the reasons for long wait times, not descrimation. If an area is unsafe, its not descrimation. If Uber blocks these locations so drivers cant see they are entering a dangerous area, the driver will cancel once arriving. So you will still have long wait times. Reason for cancel, unsafe pickup.
The issue with low income areas is the low income. They can't afford to order an Uber because their income is too low to afford the ride in the first place. Thats not a negative thing. I cant afford a Lambo. Is it discrimination because I don't own one?
If your income is low, your city offers optional transportation. The city bus, free shuttles, friends and family. Its not Uber's place to make rides affordable for low income riders. If they did, there will be a heavy decline, because drivers drive to make profit. Drivers must deduct fuel, maintience, car insurance, phone bill and car loans from any earning made while driving. Only after these expenses can drivers make profit. How does a low income ride fit into all this? Someone has to pay the cost. Driver fares and offers no longer allow for free rides or even low income ones. This means Uber will have to pay the difference, or local and Federal Governments will have to add rideshre credits to welfare benefits.

I just drive for Lyft in Denver. Unfortunately, it's very hard to determine where better and worse areas are here because gentrification is so rampant that there are affluent pockets in even the worst neighborhoods, but I do avoid certain areas at certain hours. But mainly I evaluate destinations for distance and where I want to be at what time of day for my schedule. Lyft shows you the destination, briefly anyway. I picked up a bunch of drunk pax last night, loud blasting music acting crazy. They asked for charger so I gave them one to use. Apparently it wasn’t fully plugged in so it didn’t charge their device. The music was so loud I couldn’t hear anything they were playing on a portable boom box. Since my app wireless charger didn’t work they through it out the window. At the end of the trip when I asked for my charger the guy said it didn’t work so he through it out the window. I have these assholes on video if you want the footage be happy to send if not that’s fine. But pax be freaking crazy these days.

I have an idea: 6:16 Why doesn't Uber put those beautiful self driving vehicles with robots in the high demand crime areas instead of using human beings as test dummies.
It is very unfortunate that independent contractored drivers are being threatened of deactivation by Uber if they drive don't drive in high risk and car jacking areas that Uber Corporate Excutives are not willing to drive into themselves especially since Uber doesn't protect the drivers' safety with a security guarded onterrage.

As soon as I accept a ride and I know that I'm going to an area that I do not want to be at, I turn off the app. Like that, I know that I won't receive any requests that will keep me there longer than I want to be. I drop off the passenger and can easily return to where I want to be at. Once I reach where I want to be, I turn the app back on. Some people tell me that I'm passing up on rides. As an independent contractor, that is my choice!

In other words, those same people should be worried about their own pockets instead of watching yours!

Many states have no protections for drivers. In NYC a bill was created making it a felony to assault a driver with up to 25 year penalty. In many states you have no protections and i think a lot of drivers are thinking about safety. Many parts of the country there's gun fire on a daily basis in some of these areas. Crime is up and you pulling up in your car is very risky. I've experienced a lot of questionable pickups in these areas and it was my street smarts that kept me safe.

Here's the thing: I'm from Brooklyn, NY, born and raised but now residing in the DC region. I will avoid the hoods of SE DC at night. Some neighborhoods have one way in and one way out (meaning you literally have to back out to leave). I've had trips in and out of these neighborhoods where passengers are picking up drugs and doing drug transactions (and I'm not talking about marijuana). Drivers get robbed, carjacked, and shot in these areas. I drive a 7 series also...so why in the hell would i go back to any of these neighborhood? I've switched to only doing Premium so I can avoid picking up in these areas. Until these platforms can better vet passengers, I'm refusing to go. If I'm an independent contractor, then it's my choice and no one can tell me otherwise.

I dropped off a guy who I picked up in a good area to a bad area.. a lady had paid for his ride.. this was a black guy. I have no prejudice. He had stated he had a few dogs he wanted to bring, I said fine, go get them. He came back to the car without them, tried a few more x and finally I told him I have to get going. He stated that I was talking too much so I shut up and drove him.. when I got to his location.. a 711 store.. he got out and told me to open the trunk. I told him no, because he had not put anything in it. I was not going to do that. He became belligerent and I drove away from him with the passenger door still open. He ran to the car even more agitated and I told him.. there is NOTHING of his in the back of the car, and to shut the door. I told him a few times to do this. He slammed it with all his might. I was pretty shook by this so decided to report it to Uber.. I locked the doors and was sitting there, he started throwing rocks at the car. I got out of there quickly. I have nicknames for certain areas.. Sketchville, Bangerville, tweekerville.. certain areas of town I DO avoid. Uber support is nearly nonexistent. They went from bad to worse.. From India to The Philippines.. I dont speak tagalog or else it might not be so bad.. I could not understand them at all.. they put me on hold for 20 mins then hung up on me.. 2nd try.. I could barely understand the guy.. he wasnt of much help.. very disappointing.
