  • Phillip Sear plays a song without words by the Polish pianist and composer Alfons Szczerbiński (1858-95).
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Szczerbiński was born in Gostyń, the son of Franciszek, a senior court secretary, and Julia née Kostrzewski. He spent his early youth in Śrem. He created his first compositions at the age of seven; one of his children's compositions titled “Fantasia” comes from this period. Though Szczerbiński's family nurtured his musical talent, his frail health limited his education. After his father's death, he finally pursued his passion in Berlin, studying under renowned composers like Woldemar Bargiel. After his return to Poland, he worked until 1893 as a music teacher in the house of Count Plater in Niekłanie near Radom, and later took up a teaching post in Kraków.
Despite his promise, Szczerbiński's life was marked by frustration. Many of his works, primarily for piano, were either lost during World War I or destroyed by the composer himself. Disillusioned by failed attempts to secure a prestigious teaching position and yearning for a career as a concert pianist, Szczerbiński died young in 1895. He apparently died of poisoning (food poisoning?) in a hotel while arranging to meet a priest to discuss taking Holy Orders.
This somewhat Mendelssohnian set of songs without words was first published in 1891. It was dedicated to Countess Sophie Plater, who I assume to be the wife of his employer at Niekłanie. This piece is a calming contrast to the relentless #2 of this set.
