Everybody loves Christmas. Actually, no, during the 17th century it was an incredibly controversial holiday. Mostly because a religious sect called the Puritans wanted to ban it. It might seem very strange to us, but Christmas back then was less of a cozy get-together and more like a total riot.

Party all night and then pray for forgiveness the next day....it's been working for centuries.
Better to ask for forgiveness than permission
It works for christians and catholics i supposed. Even if only in their minds.
Speaking of Christmas and the sea, we Greeks adorn model sailing ships and boats, we do this to honour our hardworking fishermen and sailors in general, but we also honour our ancestors, both the ancient naval heroes like Themistocles and those who fought the Ottomans in the Greek war of independence of 1821 with their ships like Andreas Miaoulis.
I'd love to see a sloop decorated for Christmas. Garlands around the railing, ornaments hung from the rigging, candles everywhere. Maybe even a star on the mast...
I'll buy a ship and do it someday. May even invite you!
The West Edmonton Mall ship was decorated for Christmas. I tried finding a picture of it decorated up via Google, but no dice
Imagine a nativity scene on a pirate ship lmao

Pirate: “******”
Captain Daniels: “Not on my Christian Minecraft server!”
So you're telling me, "The Purge" was an actual thing that happened and not just some weird ass movie about killing each other for one day?
What I was thinking was, and Halloween is so horrible because?
Good job as usual, and bonus points for referencing "The Misfortunes of Alonso Ramírez," an uncommon and under-rated text.
I'm using it as a source for a lot of the coming videos
EGGNOG WITH RUM EGGNOG WITH RUM
Say Gold And Gunpowder, could you please make a video going more into detail about the religious views of pirates? You touch on it here and there, but I'd love to see something more in-depth.
It might make a good video. I'd guess it would depend on social status how you viewed pirates. The lower class would likely support it and it would have mixed views in the middle and upper classes I'd say. Just as stealing and lying today is frowned on unless the people judging agree with you or have a hateful bias towards the ones you are stealing or lying to. Much of what was done as a pirate would likely be justified as righteous when considering the corruption of mankind. That doesn't mean the men who were privateering/pirating wouldn't consider consequences of their actions but it's likely they'd hope for some kind of redemption and try to do something good to attempt to offset their bad deeds like anyone else might etc.
If one wants to know what a pirates Xmas party could have been like they should look to things like Marti Gras in Louisiana. Even the King cake tradition i still practiced, though instead of a bean its usuallly a small plastic baby inside a wreath shaped braided cake. Pirates were a big part of our Southern Amerucan Heritage.
If this is what Christmas was in the olden days, I think I might be on board with these "retvrn to tradition" folks
"Alright mates, meat is back on the menu!"
Buccaneers: *happy buccaneer noises*
Thank you for making this video. Merry Christmas, Gold and Gunpowder!
That riff at the beginning goes hard
Merry Christmas, G&G
thank you very much!
This was a fun topic. Happy holidays and cheers for the new year! 🏴☠
I love this channel btw, idk why it hadn’t been showing up recently on my page but I got one recommendation and now I’m going through all the new ones. Cheers and happy new year.
Amazing job captain keep them coming
Happy new ARRRRRRRR!
great video !!! thankyou so much
Merry Christmas. 👍
So Christmas in Pyrate age was a cross between the Purge-lite and Saturnalia?

Huh, that's what Christmas looks like now. Maybe this video can give me advice on surviving.
In Norway kids dress up and sing christmas carols. But in new years eve. But its still december and i wondered if it was related to pirates dressing up to sing christmas carols and get food, or take it if not. Also trick and treat seems related to this
See, everyone thinks Cromwell was a jerk for wanting to ban Christmas.. Turns out, he may have had a point
It's a planetary thing I think.☄️
I got rum!
Party hard then pray hard!😂
I’m sure they had chickens, because you would not need to store chicken, because you don’t get a lot from 1 chicken. And the rich and royalty ate meat year round.
Oh GOD I was really hoping you'd make one about pirate christmass! Its sooooo awesome!
Imagine a pirate ship catching up to some poor terrified merchant and then they just give them a few previously stolen goods, wish them happy new year, and let go.
...noone would believe them...

So, you're telling me that Christmas used to involve partying, drinking, fornication and robbing the rich? Sign me up.
Can we get a Hanukkah episode next?

i always assumed the "christmas is Jesus' birthday" meme was a modern evangelical invention. its interesting to hear that even early protestants had already forgotten that its simply a feast day in celebration of Christ's birth
The time's roughly right though with the whole rough timeline of John the Baptist's conception and birth and the timegap between his and Christ's/
