The school I went to is very old, it was founded in 1509 and at one point they had compulsory smoking lessons, in the morning and afternoon and any pupil not smoking would be punished. This was because it was during a period of the plague and the school was situated in the grave yard of the local cathedral and due to the miasma theory, they thought they could ward it off by filling the air with the smell of tobacco.

I like the psychotropic effect of weed, your toughts work so much quicker and are much 'deeper' than normal, and you're never bored in your free time when you smoke. You become more creative with everything, and it makes you friendly and peaceful. (but don't do it too much at once if you're not used to it, because it can make you paranoid or scared, and it takes a bit o/t the top effect away if you do it too much & too often) I smoke from around 1987 and still enjoy it very much, I wouldn't wanna live without it. For me it would take the playfulness of life away.. POT IS FUN! (groetuitholland! ;)

Actually, only cigarettes have a bunch of chemicals added to it. Most pibe tobaccos and cigar tobaccos have none of that stuff, it would have to be some really cheap aromatic pibe or cigar tobacco to have been treated with anything but a wash in natural materials to ensure the branded product has the same basic flavour across batches of tobacco from different places and years.

14:48 He must not be talking about marijuana. You can’t just grind up weed and eat it. The plant contains THCA which isn’t psychoactive. If you’re not smoking it you need to decarboxylate it by heating it to 240F / 115C for about 45 min. That turns it into active THC you can eat.

Greetings from the land of Captain Morgan ! With respect , I'd question some of your conclusions . For example, you quote William Dampier who reports that he was told that ganga and hemp were different plants when in fact they are the same plant grown in different ways for different purposes . Indeed , one of the earliest known written words is ' canava ' , which is a precursor of both 'cannabis' and 'canvas'. He seems to be accepting a misconception against the evidence of his own eyes. Given that hemp was such a vital material in the structure of ships' rigging and caulking , it is barely conceivable it was only grown in Asia . I do not think much research has been conducted into the psychoactive strength of early modern European hemp but it is actually impossible that it was devoid of cannabinoids . As you note , mariners were not averse to smoking 'weeds' other than tobacco so , once tried and appreciated I doubt that it lacked popularity. Incidentally, Herodotus reported in the fifth century BC that the Scythians inhaled , imbibed and ate cannabis for ritual, recreation and morale so it is surely incorrect to say the herb was uncultivated for such purposes outside of Asia since the Scythians migrated from Asia into SE Europe . Also, the herb was used recreationally in Ancient Rome , amongst other pre-modern European societies. Likewise , would we expect the Alexandrian Satraps of South Asia to be ignorant of Cannabis Sativa which was certainly native to regions now in Afghanistan, Pakistan , Kashmir and Punjab ? Regarding cocaine , your are correct to say that the cocaine alkaloid was first isolated in 1855 and produced as cocaine hydrochloride . However , the use of 'cocaine' in Europe began very soon after the discovery of the Americas. . Analysis of pipes believed to have been in the possession of William Shakespeare , born only 72 years after Columbus' disastrous landing and contemporaneous almost with the emergence of the so called "Golden Age of Piracy" , contain compounds deriving from coca - that is, cocaine . Sixteenth and seventeenth century apothecaries were not incompetent and would very likely have had many ways to prepare this herb just as they did with all the other herbs they were able to obtain . Regarding opium , the drug has a very long recorded history of use in Europe . 'Poppy' is mentioned regularly in early modern literature and almost always in relation to its soporific and analgesic qualities . Given the frequent dangers to life and limb experienced by mariners , never mind outlaw ones , it seems inconceivable that they would not avail themselves of the most powerful analgesic compound known until the latter nineteenth century ( when diamorphine was derived from opium ). It may very well be true that , on board a ship, the drug was too valuable to have been commonly consumed recreationally but conversely, they could hardly have been unaware that it was pleasurable as well as vital . I first 'enjoyed' opioids in a medical situation but I reported to everyone in earshot that it was bloody lovely. Finally, the use of cannabis in early and medieval Islam is well established , indeed incontrovertible. The Corsairs of Northern Africa would have been as familiar with it as any other Islamic peoples of their time . Their influence upon the development of European piracy is something I expect I could learn a lot about from you but I understand there was a considerable degree of communication of varying kinds - in fact a great number of them were European . It seems to me inconceivable that this did not include the introduction of recreational drug use from one to the other and vice versa. All that said , I. still don't doubt that fags and grog were the drugs most commonly consumed by pirates. As you note , they were both wildly popular amongst the populations European pirates derived from so it would be what they were used to and expected .Thanks for your work - it is stimulating , as it were. I have subscribed to your channel. Cheers , me hearty !

I'm fairly certain the word "marijuana" was derived from a misunderstanding of the colonial languages.
There is an island in the Caribbean that has a different name on different old maps.
The island seems to be originally named for the sea or mer iguana that lived upon the island but over time it begings to appear as marijuana island.
Common sense tells me they were growing cannabis on the island and misnomered the plant after the island.

@@davesmith3023 Yes and no. Hemp grows everywhere but has nothing to do with the sex of the plant.
Hemp, marijuana, and cannabis are all names for the same plant that have taken on different concepts over the years.
My comment was about the etymology of the word marijuana.

The term marijuana was made up in the 30s to demonize cannabis by associating it with Mexicans who'd supposedly smoke a rape white women in a marijuana stupor

@@Dankelheit You are right. They made up that name so cannabis farmers and hemp manufacturing would be fooled into vote cannabis illegal. They told the cannabis hemp industry it was a completely different plant and fooled them into losing their livelihoods. Modern hemp is exactly the same as hemp used to be but all the THC is constantly and unnaturally bred out because of that stupid law. The law tests the hemp crops each year and farmers kill the entire crop whenever it tries to get its natural thc back. They cannot plant their own seeds. They lost a lot of very good varieties of hemp because it would not breed out it's THC. Interesting though where they got the idea for the new name, an iguana island. I never could find out where that weird name came from. My grandfather grew many acres of it in the 1920s and 30s. He called it reefer. Does anyone know where that name came from ?

there is no "ripped off", baseless accusation. my use of any music in all of my videos falls within fair use - otherwise the RUclips algorithm would notice it instantly and demonetize or block my video, and I don't upload demonetized videos
