Watch my thumbs as I fly the helicopter in this video. A couple things to note are how little I move the sticks while hovering, then during aggressive hovering maneuvers watch how much I'm anticipating the helicopter movement with the sticks. EXAMPLE: I'm already moving the stick all the way to the right while the helicopter is still going to the left.
This is part of a video series teaching you how to eventually fly full function 6 channel RC helicopters. This video shows you what the thumbs are doing on the transmitter while flying in a hover, then quickly through transitioning flight, forward flight and even a couple simple inside loops.
i learned building my helis from you and tony, your vids have been the core of my building skills, so THANK YOU!!
Cool, sounds like you got the BeltCP version 2. Pretty nice helicopter. When I did the backwards look I was NOT in 3D mode. The reason I worked was because I did a loop like a plane does a loop. So yes, at the top of the loop my blades were actually pulling my down but it was only for a short time. I was never trying to hover upside down.
I figured since I've flown BIG 6 channel airplanes, that 6 channel would be a good place to start with a helicopter even if I took out some of the 3D features by trimming to the low limit, until I picked up on the basics. Then I could add in a little here/there. Dont think I'll go that route now that I'm seeing the small movements on the sticks. Saves me money and aggravation!
Thanks I needed to see this movement!!!
hey Mikey, you have given me great tutorials and i wanted to thank you for teaching me how to use RC helicopter, also thanks for doing the loop and teaching on how to do one!
thanks!!!!!!!!!!
Good question. In the beginning it's me my transmitter beeping as I adjust my trims. Then during the flying my count down timer beeps every minuet. Then after 7 minuets (I think) my timer ends and it beeps a bunch. The timer helps me know when my battery is running low. Of course how aggressively I fly will change how long the battery lasts too so the timer is just a guide.
Great vid, I agree the Sesame st touch is great. Nice to see a mode 2 pilot with a DX6i showing stick movements to keep ahead of the heli.
Awesome video. Watching your stick movements really helped. I quickly mastered a fixed-pitched heli and thought that a collective-pitch would be no problem. After trying to fly my first cp heli I VERY QUICKLY realized that it is way different. This video helped me understand just how different the cp helis handle
@MikeysRC Thumb fliers often hit a wall in their flying somewhere. But, the more important issue is to always use a neck strap. A neck strap holds the bulk of the transmitter, and allows the pilot to relax on the sticks. The DX6i is an especially bulky radio, and younger pilots with smaller hands, will find it difficult to grasp with a neck strap and impossible to grasp without.
this was extremely helpful.
i just purchased a titan 450 (trex clone) off ebay and its my first 6 channel.
very helpful. thanks!
No my preference is for just my thumbs on top. I find the to finger was very constrictive and it also makes it hard to reach up and grap other switches on the transmitter.
Very nice flying Mikey, I have just purchased a MSR and have started to play and learn with this.
Hope to get as good as you.
Yes, very good question. The short is that 3 of the servos that control the swash plate are "mixed" together. Meaning....when you move the throttle stick all 3 servos (each servo has it's own channel) move. So here is the the breakdown for most 6 channel helicopters,
Channel 1 Right swash plate aileron
Channel 2 Rear swash plate elevator
Channel 3 Throttle / motor
Channel 4 Tail / rudder servo (actually your gyro plugs in here first)
Channel 5 AUX gyro wire
Channel 6 Left swash plate aileron
Thanks. Yeah I have heard similar complaints with Walkera. I also agree in some senses the 450 is an easier helicopter. It's such a precise flying machine!
@hellrayzer21 it's how complex the helicopter is. 4 channel helicopters are only fixed pitch on the main blades so lift is relative to how fast the blades are spinning. But on a 6 channel heli the pitch of the blades is variable allowing for much greater flight performance.
Yes, I'll definitely be getting more into detail of the build and how to set up all the electronics including the gyro. The use of the gyro is to help the pilot keep the nose of the helicopter pointed in the direction he want's it to be pointed. That is not an easy task, so the gyro scenes small movements and automatically compensates for it.
Wow!!! Inspires me to not give up. Very cool flying.
@littleAZN248 On a 6 channel heli actually only 5 channel are used. 3 channels are for 3 servos that control the swash plate on the heli that makes it go up and down and tilt any which direction. A 4 the channel is for the tail servo. And the 5th channel is for the motor.
@mancobooster Actually that's done on channel 5. Channel 6 is for the other "aileron" on a 6 channel helicopter.
@MikeysRC hey thanks man
i'm flying non stop with the coax atm(for as far as possible with inly 1 battery and am doing just fine
no crashing and such
i hope to have my 450 in about a week
and will take another look at your videos a couple times
@skaterfugater yeah i thought that was strange too, been flying 3 ch for a couple years then went to a 4ch and had to relearn , and unlearn a few things. i think 2-3ch helis are good to see if you like the hobby enough, and then after you figure that out move to a 4 ch SR and practice with that till ya get used to the controls and orientation.b/c one you go 6ch, wrecks start to become pricy!
It's and E-sky Comanche. If you are talking about an Esky ah 64apache then it's probably pretty good. I think Esky is a good brand.
@MikeysRC while i'm looking forward to your 450 build videos. I'm sure i'll be using them to guide me in the near future.
Actually channel 5 is usually used for a remote gyro gain selection. CHannel 6 is one of the swash plate servo channels. Good question....not sure what I was switching it might have been a timer.
@MrSavinna It's a Trex 450 clone helicopter. 6 channel CCPM set up.
@GofCis The throttle channel is also miked into the left stick.
i just bought 3 heli's. Double Horse Volitation .Blade 120sr and an Esky belt 3D cpx. The Esky will have to sit on the shelf for awhile and look pretty why i get my wings with the other two heli's . Should be fun Happy Holidays Will and Happy Flying.
Mickey please show more detailed assemble/build videos of 6ch helicopters, and the gyro setup etc, what is the use of the gyro?
@socalRooster Either get a simulator or you just gotta go for it =). If you can do some circuits in your co-ax then you should be ready to do some really slow flying circuits in your 450
@Grinder0909 I tried that...it feels weird - harder to move controls around fast - hard to flick other switches(dual rates, gear, flaps, throttle hold). My fingers have never slipped off the top of the sticks with the sharp metal spiky tines.
nice vid thanks just passing through 4ch an getting boredl now, what would you say this has for a top speed going forward
very nice flying man
i just got me a graupner micro light indoor coax
and have a storm 450 on the way
but i'm on mac so i can't run flight sims
because i'm not gonna get me bootcamp or anything for windows programs
this smart?
or a total no go?
im kinda new to this. ive flown 3ch helis for while and they're getting a lil boring. so recently i purchased a 4ch fp single rotor heli and i love it... but my question is, if the left stick controls blade pitch, what controls throttle?
Then on the transmitter the LEFT stick moving up and down controls,
Channel 1, 2, 3, and 6 all at the SAME time.
LEFT STICK side to side movement controls the rudder or channel 4
The RIGHT stick moving it up, down and side to side ALSO controls channel 1, 2, and 6 to tilt the swash plate in any direction which is what makes the helicopter tilt in any direction.......or fly forwards, backwards, or side to side.
No so much loose control but just harder to control. It's because of the air swirling around it's makes the helicopter controls a little unpredictable. It's called being in "ground effect"
@nim1mx
Honestly, I'd recommend trying out the mSR - I have a fleet of helis now that I've learned through, and the mSR is quite the beast, you can smash it up and most of the time just dust it off and fly. When it does break, its a couple bucks at most. I got mine on ebay for 50 bucks and bound it to my Tx (Dx7). You can get your orientations down without the cost.
Every radio has pointies on the stick, they also have good grips on the circumference. Almost every rc flier will disagree about the ability to provide more precision using your thumbs. One of the first things you pick up from more experienced pilots is using two fingers to control the sticks. Think about it, a skinny and long object with a weight on the uppermost tip is unstable. Simple movements are exaggerated due to the effect of leverage. Two fingers makes you "choke up" on the stick and
these vids helped me out alot, didnt know where to start Thanks!!!!!
The same stick. The transmitter mixes them together with it's programing.
@DKoppJr If your ninja is a RTF heli it should all be programmed in to the transmitter. So as long as you put the heli in "Idle UP" mode then you will be able to give it negative pitch for inverted flight.
this was extremely helpful.
i just purchased a titan 450 (trex clone) off ebay and its my first 6 channel.
very helpful. thanks!
at 4 mins and 18 seconds... i would be out alot of money... LOL
I see 4 channels in use the hover up down, and swing tail left right, etc. But what are the other 2 channels for? I've begun flying a blade MSR and have gotten use to a lot of the basic controls. Is flying a EXI 450 alot harder?
hey mikey YOUR THE BEST TEACHER EVER really im so graetfull for this vid thankss
I am getting a Ninja 450 electric heli, and wanted to know, How is the Pitch, and throttle controlled at the same time? Or is it? And for inverted flying how is that obtained? I know how to roll the bird upside down just not sure how to get the rotor to thrust in the opposite direction.
I have just ordered a razor 450 6ch..I have flown many 4ch helis but with fixed pitch.I fly planes for the most part now but will fly this heli when it arrives. Are you in mode 1 or 2 and is the right stick rudder?
I want to start with a 6ch is that a bad idea or do I need to start with a 4ch? I bought a cheap 3.5ch and was pretty good with it but I dont have any real experience what is the cheapest way to get into this hobby?
WOW fastest reply in the world! Thank you so much! Your videos help so very much!
Im a beginner here, so throttle and collective are on your left stick together as up and down and right/left is anti-torque? and on the right stick is cyclic?
@MikeysRC I just bought a 3ch heli and a 4 ch airhogs helix 360. trying to learn and work my way up to a 6 channel. Have you flown the airhigs helix 360?
@abc11447741 Yea I see, What would be a good transition plane? Im really anxious to start moving on to larger heli's, they're funner than I thought. It be great if there was a transition plane that would allow me to transfer gear from the it to the EXI 450. There is one thing I'm still confused on what sizes do they come in from small to large? I know cars go with 1/36, 1/18, 1/16, 1/10... etc.
@Shelklas hey thanks man
stumbled upon that one before
but is it any good for rc training with with rc heli remote
i didn't really found anything about that on their site
only one rc heli is in the aircrafts list
@fabienbable about 6-8 minuets depending on how hard you fly.
I can see my house whenever you pan left! What a crazy coincidence! I walk my dogs back there all the time. Hope to see you flying soon!
Ha...small world huh. I'm thinking about creating a meetup group to fly at interesting spots in Northern California. I'll post a video about it when I've got it all figured out.
Mikey im thinking of getting a cheap 6 channel heli and I was looking at a Walkera 22e its about $100 but has brushed motors or a honeybee cp3 which is basically the same only costs more what do you think?
@csRocker Yeah you will be fine. Just get plentyof practice with the coax first. Then use my how to fly videos to get the basics down with the 450 also.
Hey! Nice video, thanks for sharing!:) I wondered about something though, which helicopter should I get, they have to fill these criteria:
Good, stable flight and good hover
Good in windy conditions
Collective pitch
Good quality, but NOT very expensive!
Thanks!
Is it easy to move from 4ch FP to 6ch CP? I know 6ch have variable pitch but what additional stick inputs does 6ch add to a 4ch? Left stick is still throttle and yaw. Right stick is still roll and pitch? What's new to learn?
What I find really weird is that on all 3 channel helis the gear (spinning left and right) is on the right stick along with nick (foreward backward). Pitch (up and down) is the left stick.
However on this 6 channel heli pitch and gear are on one stick - the left one, whereas now roll and nick are right stick.
Do you know why it is like that? And will that take time to get used to? I mainly mean the gear's being on the other side now?
How do you control the motor speed on a 6 channel? Pitch control is with the left stick right? But before take off then how do you rev up the helicopter? Thanks
if i buy the dx6i can i use this with any rtf heli or do i need to chage recievers or something.
How do you guys keep your throttle at a constant speed while operating the rudder control on the same stick?
Excellent shutter-effect, looking down on the blades!
i have a question because what is the bliep i hear all the time in your video then at once i hear bleep bleep what is that???
does it tell you youre battery lvl??
I know what a 4ch heli is. I can see 5 channels here with the addition of collective, but what is the 6th channel?
And what is it you're switching at 2:28?
how many years you have to fly rc heliicopters before you are able to controll one like this
Hi, for hovering you keep the gas stick at 50% or above? I cannot see it clearly, tnx
Thats a very good question. Well, it's an informative showing you what control inputs are needed to fly a remotely controlled helicopter. WOW pretty interesting stuff.
Hi Will,
I'm new at the 6ch.
In the config settings (Swash AFR), is this where I can set a lower number than 100% so the stick is not so sensitive? if yes what do you recommend?
looks like a tun of movement for minor adjustments, is that normal sensitivity?
Is it a left handed or right handed remote control setting? Thanks for answer
Wow, I wish I could fly like you! Nice video!
@MikeysRC the 6th channel is for the gyro ;-)
if you want to change it's sensitivity
what is your setup for the pitch curve i see you ar e hoovering below midstick.?
Is it possible so that you can switch to inverted flight while doing the loop?
I just bought one after flying a 3.5 channel and I am having problems getting it in the air. I broke the rear blades on the first attempt. I can not get it to lift off straight in the air, any pointers?
buddy what a good job =) im getting thet hang of my blade flying side to side backward ect..still having a bit of trouble wwhen the heil is facing me but my mcx helps me learn...
5..STARS and i FAVE this video..love to see more like this..thanks
@MikeysRC I agree. I use the thumbs on top method, too. Tried the pinch way, wasn't pretty.
@MikeDMays Instead of rather buying 4 channel or a 6 channel, I would recommend getting a simulator, then switching quickly to a 6 channel after you master the simulator. A recommended simulator for RC Helicopters would be Phoenix v3, or you could buy Realflight.
is that expo settings is must be set or we can live it 0%? am using futaba t6ex
@nim1mx
When you're ready I'd then suggest getting into an align 450, or one of its clones. I havent tried a clone, however I did replace my 450's entire head assembly with a cnc clone and it flew beautifully. The parts are inexpensive, and they are quite stable. Without a doubt, if you dont have the Phoenix flight simulator, that's probably the best investment return you're going to get. Costs 0 to crash a simulated heli, and there's no risk of losing appendages!
@ZXETIT You will need to change the receiver to a spektrum 2.4ghz dsm2 for it to bind with the reciever
Thats a really great vid and a nice flying with a nice heli !
@al93535 Every so often I give a quick flick of full throttle. Depending on how weak the motor sounds I can tell how the batter is doing. You can also set a timer. Most RC helis this size fly for between 8-10 minuets.
@muckerxown Awesome. Either way you were flying and that's all that matters.
ok I'm realy good @ flying coaxel heli's.so I bought a 450 heli I have been hovering it sience 1-8-11 and this thing scares me I still can not hover nose in.should I just go ahead a do foward flying and see what happens..how do I get the nerve to do foward flyght?
Sweeeeeeet love this vid, watched it a few times. Nice clean flying :)
Did it spin to the left or tilt to the left?
would you consider clearview flight sim a good base of learning?
hey i got an msr and a busted esky belt cp v2 im upgrading it to an exi do you think i can hanlde it
@dcame002 now thats funny. i'm enjoying the heli's, Sounds like you are to.Ive been hovering around my apt. with the 120sr.getting the hang of it.I'd like to get outside more but to windy or to cold. At -19c outside i only got minutes out of the battery, shitty. Good news is i just got 5 batteries in the mail today. So now the fun begins. Happy flying friend.
how long does the battery out of it? how long do you fly?
MikeysRC Question re Gyro...I'm practicing but find I can only hover with HeadHolding turned on and fly better with RateMode On the gyro. If I try to hover and control the Heli in RateMode, the tail swings left or right and its much easier to flip a switch into HH mode. Any suggestions based on your experience?? (Looks like you fly in HH mode as you are working that rudder for sure).
Excuse my asking..But is that somewhere in Northern California..? The backdrop looks like some NorCal terrain..Looks alot like where I live.
Great video BTW.
@MikeysRC so could i use a 5 channel transmitter?
nice flying... hope someday i can fly as good as you can...
I don't know about you guys but I always pinch my cyclic control, it makes it way easier to have precise control.
hellow bro is it safe to play this rc??? i mean what if the blade cut off and went to your eyes???? i mean omg plss rep
im new, i dont know any rc helis. but what heli is that you got?
wow this looks so smooth i like to go faster and a bit higher just so i can see it in the air.but not to high
@MotocrossLifeStyle A CopterX 450 V2 with a belt driven tail NOT a shaft driven tail.
Great video but I fly with my thumb and index finger on both sticks like Alan szabo jr does but it's just preference of what ever works best for you
