Pottery Top Tip: How to Give your Pottery Pieces a Professional Finish - Pottery Video/Tutorial

  • Hello everyone - Welcome to my RUclips Channel - The Pottery Corner, coming to you from my studio in Chichester, on the South Coast of England. In this video I demonstrate how to finish the edges on your pottery pieces. Five minutes spent at the greenware stage cleaning up the edges (i.e. before the piece has been fired) will be well worth the effort on your finished work and is much easier and safer than sanding when the work has been biscuit/bisque fired. Remember to wear a mask to stop you inhaling the clay particles which are pretty nasty things.
    I hope you find this demonstration useful. My work is available to purchase on my website via www.thepotterycorner.co.uk together with details of the courses available at the studio if you live in the locality.
    Do subscribe to my channel for further top tips and also to watch the kiln opening videos from The Pottery Corner. Do let me know in the comments if there is a Top Tip Tuesday theme that you would like me to cover and I’ll have a go!
    Look forward to seeing you again soon
    Sarah Amos

    Another totally useful video! Thank you. I was doing exactly what you were saying not to do...wiping with a sponge! And of course I couldn’t get the grit off of the piece, as hard as I would try. This will be such a helpful tip for me. Again...thank you. 🥰

    Greetings from Canada 🇨🇦! I’m a new subscriber- I love your videos; I have been binge watching them since being laid up healing a broken leg. 🙁 I tend to use green scrubbies, as you suggest, and wire mesh sanders torn into very small pieces, and of course, wearing a mask outside. I use a soft makeup brush to clear the dust. I agree that it’s much easier ( physically- speaking) to finish green ware compared to bisque ware. Many thanks again!

      Why thank you! With coronavirus we are having to be super clean to protect the students. I find the clean down at the end of a teaching session quite therapeutic. Thanks for watching. Watch out for more Top Tip Tuesday videos in the future

    Love how great a scrubby works on greenware, so easy! ... i still struggle to neaten or cut rims and edges. Especially before its leather hard! I hope to get a better handle on it. All the best Sarah. I am enjoying exploring with pottery. Brings such joy. Cheers for now.

    Thank you so much for your videos which are so helpful for my role as a Pottery Instructor to adults with learning difficulties. I was rather thrown in the deep end when I began my job just before the lockdowns so my plan to attend courses was put on hold. I watch a lot of videos but few give such useful detailed information as yours on the practical logistics of making ceramics.
    At work we have many failed attempts (we learn from these and have loads of fun doing so!) so I'm constantly recycling clay. I'd very much appreciate a Top Tip video on clay recycling and how to minimise air bubbles.

      There is one thing I’m wondering if you would help me with . I’m using a commercial “ dipping “ glaze Which I glaze bowls and mugs with .... I’m wondering could I also use the same glaze to brush onto small surfaces ie small trinket bowls .... ?Thank you

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  3 года назад

      @@matiamou14 - you can brush dipping glazes but not often with good results. The powder tends to split from the water (as it is thinner than brush glaze) and you really need a thickening agent (can't remember the name) to add to make it brushable. My advice - use tongs to dip smaller items. In my studio I used 95% brush on glazes so I can control the thickness and layering etc
      Hope that helps!

You mentioned in this video that you will go over "monoprinting"...I JUST ABSOLUTELY LOVE the plate you show here and am so very interested in knowing about your monoprinting video. Can you tell me where it is? and if you have posted it on youtube as I cannot find it. Thanks !! Stay Safe Stay Healthy Stay Clay!

    Another thing you can use for that is the round hair dodad for making a bun in your hair. They look like a scrubby you use for dishes only the hair thing has a hole in the middle. Use it only on completely dry ware

    Nice demo! Have you considered using wet sanding pads for your bisque? I like the foam pads with a diamond sanding side. Reasonably priced, easy to hold onto, and last quite a long while.

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  3 года назад

      Hi Sue. I really shy away from sanding bisque fired work with anything because the dust is carcinogenic. Having survived cancer once, I really don't want to put myself, or my students, at risk even using wet sanding. If you do the finishing at the greenware stage you've saved yourself a job! Thanks for watching 😁

  • @allenfitz1

    Hi love your videos. If you want you can use wet / dry sand paper on bisk ware. Just wet the paper and no dust. Just a bit of slury to clean off.
    Im watching from redford mi. USA.
    My mother was from plymouth. And I have relitives in Weymouth

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  3 года назад

      Hi Allen - you can sand bisque but it is a risky business. The dust is carcinogenic and really not good to breathe or have in the studio. Personally I always do the 'sanding' part when still greenware because although you will get some dust it has not been fired and therefore not quite as bad (although you still need a dust filter mask). Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.

    • @allenfitz1
      @allenfitz1 3 года назад

      @@thepotterycorner yes i understand about the dust. If you wet sand it there is no dust

    I ONLY wet sand my bisque if I need to.
