As a resident of Maryland, I would like to recognize my. former senator Barbara A. Mikulski, for whom the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (see 8:12 in the video) was named. This honor was in recognition of her support for the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes. In 2012, when NASA discovered an exploding star, they named it "Supernova Mikulski" in her honor. In addition to astronomy, she also supported biomedical research in Maryland.

Today i was at a physiks convention in a city nearby and there were one or two dudes who work with NASA (this is in Germany btw.) and who made some part for it - the filter wheel to be exact - and they had an exact replica which was used for testing with them. They said they finished working on it like ten years ago and are currently working on the next generation and are planning for the one after that.

what's incredible to me about the residual strong force (ie, the component of the strong force that holds nuclei together) is just that - it's a "weak" residual of the strong force (actually very closely analogous to the Van Der Waals forces between molecules, which should give you an idea of just how comparatively weak it is compared to the actual strong interaction), yet it /still/ manages to be strong enough to overcome the enormous electrostatic repulsion of up to several dozen protons packed into a few cubic femtometers before it even starts to occasionally be overcome.

As an almost mathematician, let me say it with the polish Science Fiction author Stanislaw Lem.
Mathematics are like a Mad Tailor (not a Mad Hatter), tailoring and seaming all kinds of clothing, not just for humans, and for animals, and plants, but also for things you've never seen before, eight-legged planets and amoebas with guns and walking clouds the size of galaxies but with a fondness for jeweled buckles. And with some luck, you find clothing that exactly fits you, or at least you like the look, and the tailor will change it for you if you ask nicely, but when you come back for the final fit, it might be totally changed from what you've chosen before.

I still can't believe they actually launched the damn thing. I've been waiting for it to launch since 2012 and every couple of weeks I catch myself forgetfully wondering if they will ever launch it.

I don't think they ever did, really. If they did it probably crashed into Venus or it's floating about aimlessly. We could've colonized the moon by now with all that money and resources.

I've been very stoked on a bit of a trend I've seen in the past year or so of science education people like you or veritasium and electro boom and smarter every day and others, who are not just presenting cool science, but doing things like this in this video. Like showing how the process works you know? It's like behind the scenes footage in how they made the record documentary or something. Like, it helps make the process human instead of this porcelain object that you're not allowed to play with. Cosmos inspired a generation of kids to become scientists which is glorious, but what you guys are doing is inspiring everyday people of any age how to not only love and enjoy and appreciate science, but get involved in interesting ways and apply those things to their own worlds and realities you know? Thank you for what you do 🐱

Great video. One thing perhaps that should be explained further (especially for novices like myself) is using MAST data with potential exoplanet spectra. It has been a steep learning curve so far, although very rewarding!

Anton Petrov is not an astrophysicist, he's a teacher (no shame in that) but Dr. Becky Smethurst is, and she deserves to be in that list of the best.

@@EnglishMike there are some smaller astrophysics channels run by current astrophysics PhD candidates (Eg: Kelly Sanderson) that give you a first person perspective into actual Astrophysics research.
Cool and useful; especially for those seriously considering going into a career in physics/astrophysics or just want to catch a glimpse of real astrophysics work.
