    Stray Notes:
    - I foreshadowed this on Twitter. The key word is 'tenuous'
    - I'm using the term language pretty loosely here, so WATCH OUT
    - Theoretical, non-prescriptive, I am a hack, reader-response criticism, yeah, yeah, same old song and dance routine
    - Massive shoutout to Reaper_V / Momon_IV for pointing me in the direction of some very useful eschatological summaries, I hugely apprecite it buddy!
    - I'm aware Obha and Obata tend not to really mean that much more into their work than surface-level, but Death Note does bear a lot of merit in understanding and studying because it is heavily studied, if at least because of how ridiculously famous it is in terms of general media, and understanding why or how is pretty important. Whether you agree or disagree with me is really the point where we can have some really interesting discussion. It's also really important to remember that even if they aren't intending it, they are drawing upon SOMETHING, and that interstitiality can tell us a lot of interesting things.
    - If the structure of this video is a bit strange from my other videos, it's because it's a bit longer holistically
    - I'm still doing arthouse - it's just gonna happen a little later
    - Eschatology is a really strange topic, and I don't major in religion or anything, so please do not hesitate to correct me if I'm wrong

    This channel satiates the overreaching analyst in me in a way that leaves me going to rewatch all of my favorites. I enjoy these kinds of discussions in the fan base, not the vapid, biased rating/rants. I subscribed a while ago, but I definitely this this "disaster" series is my favorite because it watches like a slaved over thesis. You deserve so much more attention.

    As much as Death Note's anime leaves for interpretation, the manga leaves even more with that "maybe Kira will come back" ending. I absolutely love Death Note, even 4 years after I first watched it. Sure, the last 3rd wasn't as amazing as the rest, but it's not by any means bad. If anything, it showcases the downfall of a self-proclaimed god and deliverer of justice, with some religious aspects thrown in the mix. It's a great series for discussion.
    I also find it weird how Apocalypsis, a word that normally means "revelation", got its meaning altered to "destruction" or "the end" for many people.

    • @PauseandSelect
      @PauseandSelect  8 лет назад

      It's definitely a tale revolving around hubris and the cost of that hubris. The show throws in so many chances for Light to "stop" yet he never really does because of his obsession with becoming a god.
      And I understand I'm being wildly simplistic and reductionist right now, but the shift in terminology is often attributed to the Apocalypse of John, which itself was a revelation to him. The revelation, unfortunately, happened to be cataclysmic in nature. Over time, as Christendom expanded and evolved, that became the going thought.
      When you compare it to eastern Apocalypticism, you may find it under the concept of mappo, a Dharmic decline of essential and authentic Buddhist texts and practitioner. As you can see, the concept is a little different. That point of convergence between western and eastern is a huge focus in my next video.

    • @HxH2011DRA
      @HxH2011DRA 8 лет назад

      +Pause and Select So you could say west dealt with physical worldly decline and east spritual? (with the loss of authenticity? )

    • @PauseandSelect
      @PauseandSelect  8 лет назад +3

      The Hunter x Hunter 2011 Dickriding Association Not really. Both dealt with both. Pre-Judean and eastern religions were more cyclical in terms of their eschatology, so they're more likely to map out reverted apocalyptic scenarios. For the west, you're more likely to experience what's called Millenarianism, or Chialism, where prior to the actual 'end', there's a period of divine rulership that lasts 1000 years. Of course, depending on which scholar you talk to, the Chialistic period may or may not have occurred. Furthermore, New Religion groups in the 70s-80s Japan really started gaining traction, many of whom focused on linear eschatology. As you can surmise, it's a huge mess.

      You should! It's not the most amazing thing, and the camp factor is super huge, but it - I believe - is an absolutely essential piece to understanding Japan's anime paradigm shift in the mid 2000s.

      Sensei, what's a paradigm shift?

    • @PauseandSelect

      When a model of thinking changes. The most famous is the Cold War and realist thinking. When the Cold War ended, realist and neorealist thinking shifted out of vogue and neoliberal and constructivist camps started gaining significant traction (cause of the US' position as the lone superpower).

  • @jiryensaber6090

    Understand I'm very late to this but just got recommended these and I like what I see so far. One thing I want to point out is that Death Note's creator stated the story idea MOSTLY was a reflection on the Japanese Justice System more than Judeo Christian beliefs or implications, although the images, dialogue and references are certainly there to pull from. Even the Apples in the Garden of Eden, I suppose... but remember even before the Garden of Eden, there was Light, as in... "Let There Be Light!" and hence only possible because... (suspense music intensifies) Light.. took.. a.. (Violins scratch) POTATO.. CHIP.. annnnnnddd... ATE IT!! (ahem [cough] sorry)
    Guilty until proven innocent. Now I understand you appear to be going for an overall theme about Apocalypse and different styles, I would argue this is CONTROLLED APOLCALYPSE vs. CYCLICLIC... my reasoning is that in a cycle, it can be random and violent but to be that more suits Earthquakes and Tsunamis. This is just my opinion. But its more CONTROLED CHAOS. Unpredictable but with an end and then the world or in Japan kind of "Restarts" again as it did.. so I feel DEATH NOTE is more of a CONTROLLED APOCALYPSE. Light has the power to kill so many more but sticks to his personal code of certain people and certain reasons - moral or not. I agreed with a lot you said and felt it was explained well, just wish it was a bit longer, as you were on a roll.
    Another good one I strongly feel would round out this series? (Who says you can't re-post it?) Would be to add Death Parade towards the Harmonious Apocalypse. BEFORE YKK... not after. (Death Parade is just awesome like Death Note, but... there are so many things you pick up on a re-watch!) Cherishing life, embracing each moment, but you must also face the darkness and the 'real' person you are, will become, or even CHOOSE to become. Hence the name PERSONAL APOCALYPSE. Its going to happen no matter what and the settings are tailored to you. But you still have some choice of how it ends for you and even for another you are tied to. When you vanish/die, the world ends, because that is unique to that person. It also shows than can be peaceful endings which lead perfectly into YKK. Just some thoughts to share with you. I'm going to check out some more of your content. Take care.

    What is the reason you're looking at apocalyptic fiction? Are you tracing the inspiration, or trying to analyze them to capture japan's views, or is it just a neat aesthetic. I've never seen anyone look at this theme before, from japan or not. If it's a broad thing, what are the usual goals? I've always been interested in these from an aesthetic standpoint, by the way. In something like Utena it's meaning weighs a lot less than the fact that naming yourself 'end of the world' or chanting 'absolute destiny apocalypse' is just cool.

    • @PauseandSelect
      @PauseandSelect  7 лет назад +12

      Mainly to trace its broad roots over anime and manga. To get an idea of what it stands for and how it changes or represents changes. The thing about the apocalypse in anime is that it's really polysemic. It can mean or draw upon different things at different moments, so my aim is less to establish a comprehensive, big and overarching look at the apocalypse and more like to 'dip my toes' into specific, interesting topics that fall under its umbrella.

      ***** It might just be the subject itself. Eschatology, Chialism, and Apocalypticism are very complex topics, and during the course of my reading I had to do some double-takes myself. That's partly why it took so long to get this one finished, haha.

    • @TheMaplestrip
      @TheMaplestrip 8 лет назад

    I agree that this video is well edited and interesting. However, in the future, please include subtitles rather than just depend on RUclips's auto subtitles. As was mentioned in a comment below, you use words that may not be familiar to many people. Sometimes, hearing the word alone isn't enough to know how it is spelled to google it. For example, what is being said here: 3:21 . I have no idea, and I couldn't google it!

    The way Japan depicts apocalypticism has a lot to do with World War 2 (which I supposed will be on the Akira part). There's a constant depiction of a new wave of nationalism, which Death Note may represent through its Manga ending. Really interesting topic.
    I still don't understand why you don't have 100k+ subscribers.
    Side note: In Bakuman, is heavily implied that Obata and Ohba wanted Death Note to have the same ending as the second live action movie, which is [spoilers] both Light and L killing each other, depicting not a "good vs evil" resolution, but two forces clashing, to end up eliminating each other.
    Now let's see what is going to bring the new movie to the table.

    • @PauseandSelect
      @PauseandSelect  8 лет назад +2

      Yep, you hit the nail dude - next vid is gonna be about the history of Apocalypticism, and there's so much stuff to talk about I'm stoked!
      Yeah there's definitely a balance to it, and based off of Kaneko's interviews on the show it does imply he knows Obata and Ohba well enough to think that ending might've been the best one. Obata and Obha have been pretty vague - as far as I can find - regarding what they sorta intended, so all that exists is speculation.
      Re Subs: It's because nobody knows who I am and when they find out, I'm just a pretentious hack, haha.

    • @allaroundergeek2967
      @allaroundergeek2967 8 лет назад

      Already excited for the next one. I don't think you are pretencious at all, since your argumentation is never too loosely conected or vague. I Think this is the right time for me to watch Akira since its one of the classics & before your next video comes out but I've heard it falls short from its manga since the story basically compressed a 6 volume worth of story into a 2+ hours movie. Great video. I have a question about the your comparison between the two Death Note endings. You made it clear that the manga ending is in line with the Buddhist apocalyptic idea of cyclism, but what about the anime ending? You pointed out it doesn't follow the cyclism that the manga does, but I didn't notice any conclusion about what the anime is going for instead. Did I just miss this or is that something you'll discuss in a later part?

      Hi Kuramhan! I'm actually going to falling back to the anime in the last part of my video. The ending of the anime is a bit unclear in the broader scheme of things, so it requires a lot of backtracking and clarifying to really describe what I think it's doing.

    "Let's go back a bit further" - shows "kira" on the screen. Genius.
    You'll be covering Shin Sekai Yori at some point right?

    • @PauseandSelect
      @PauseandSelect  8 лет назад

      Well I'll be talking about Shin Sekai Yori, but not as part of the series. I'll probably reference it, but there's just so much to talk about that I may omit it.
      However, I will be talking about the show separately at a later date.

    Death Note would be really great if they hadn't repeated the L arc story in the second arc of the manga and (however hateful to me) ended with Kira's victory (I was always rooting for L, he was a far more sympathetic psychopath to me).

      Yeah the second arc kinda had some pacing issues for me.

    Except in Revelation they were given a chance to repent but did not
    Rev 9 KJV
    20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:
    21 Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

    Anime News Network did an article recently about Death Note and Light Yagami's role in the series. Was he a bad guy? Anti-hero? The article left it open to everyone interpretation but I thought it was real interesting of them to do an article on Death Note after 10 years since the airing of the TV anime. Death Note has long been of major discussion in the anime fandom since it was a "starter" or gateway anime for many people. Whether for its' many interpretations, the reevaluation one's own morals, or just for romantic shipping between characters. I find it a great show to talk about and discuss. Even newer anime fans should check out the show to have a look back at the history of anime in the '00-'10 era and maybe learn the style of director Araki Tetsurou, more recently known for shows like Attack on Titan and the currently airing TV anime original, Koutetsjou no Kabaneri.
    In a more casual note, this video series being a 4-parter makes me think it is an OVA series.

      Death Note is actually an insanely interesting case study, which is why I started off with this show. Regardless of whether people like or hate it, it - in my opinion - an absolutely essential topic to study if only because of what it reveals about the person reading it. Since the creators have led it up to the readers to form their own thoughts on it, it's really interesting as both a formal and contextual piece of analysis.
      I can't really expand further on my thoughts about this without spoiling the topic of the rest of the 4-parter (cause that's really all I'm good for, big words and punch lines), but the show is representative of a massive zeitgeist shift that occurred that's beyond the scope of the show.

      Pause and Select I have actually observed people who have seen the series more intently because I thought it is interesting to see how the series bring out their morals or beliefs. Whether intentional or not, Death Note does make people spill out their "sense of justice" or "wishes (or prayers)" for what they want the world to be like.
      I have seen people who were appalled by Light and wanted him as a character to get arrested or die by the hands of law enforcers. While others would in a sense worship Light or respect his actions. Considering Light's actions as just and righteous. One case in particular, I knew a person who owned a Death Note ( the notebook) and used it for his own idea of justice. Much in the same manner as Light (potato chips not included).
      Seeing these fans go out and express these beliefs on the justice system or their overall view on humanity was an interesting and memorable experience/lesson to me. Not only that it was one of my first psychological looks into a part of the anime fandom.

    • @PauseandSelect
      @PauseandSelect  8 лет назад +2

      Well that resonance is incredibly important. We can't disengage a work - not if we want a strong, holistic look at a piece - from how its audience responded to it, and that's really where Death Note shines. You're right that intention is somewhat of an unimportant issue to Death Note, because there is *something* that's resonating with folks, and I agree with your thoughts that it might likely be a sense of justice unique to each individual.
      And did you do this for research? Cause if you did, I'd love to read your paper on it, if you have it.

    • @AnimeCommander1
      @AnimeCommander1 8 лет назад +2

      Pause and Select It wasn't a formal paper or study that I did but rather personal experiences. I just started getting into more lesser-known anime at the time like Haruhi Suzumiya, Kannazuki no Miko, Onegai Twins, and so on. At the time Death Note was huge and I started watching the series and it was one of my favorites at the time next to Code Geass and Strike Witches.
      But I noticed within both my school and the fandom that many people who watched Death Note were very open to explaining their sense of justice (intentional or not) based on their interpretation of Light and L. Either Light would be a hero, anti-hero, or a straight-forward villain to them. While L would normally be the opposite side of the spectrum compared to their view on Light.
      What I found particularly interesting is that as a person changes their sense of justice, more often than not their view on Light changes as well. A few of my friends have actually switched from liking Light to outright condemning his actions. My friends explained to me that as adults, Light's actions were just now genocide or mass murder. As teens my friends just saw "criminals" as the bad guys. After seeing that criminals or prisoners are not just serial killers, rapists, or pedophiles. My friends stances on Light changed drastically.
      I really wish I did this for a research paper. I may do one in the future if a class of mine assigns such a topic. While I love the discussion about it, I don't have a motivation to write an essay since I haven't seen Death Note in almost a decade and I prefer to write papers on more recent anime issues.

    bro ive been a debater for years so i know the terms you are using, but just throwing epistemology in there without any real hand held explanation is going to make 80% of your viewers never engage with your videos. you dont need ti dumb it down but you definitely need to work on making things accessible to an audience.

    • @PauseandSelect
      @PauseandSelect  8 лет назад +14

      Enh, hand-holding my audience kinda sells them short, and over the course of the past year or so most of my long-time sub base has been kinda used to the terms I use, why I use them, and how I approach my material. I appreciate you taking the time to give me pointers, but I don't really think it's that big of an issue.
