@@xaius4348 anime is just the shortened term for an animation in Japan, and Avatar is absolutely a anime stylistically, so I don't understand how people can say it's not one.
Don't get me wrong Avatar the Last Airbender was a great series, but it didn't break the ground most people want to think it did. Cartoons aimed at adults with groundbreaking animation and serialized storytelling were around for 20 years before Avatar and really good in the years before Avatar aired. What Avatar did that was exceptional is story control. Historically these epic animations like Robotech or Samurai Jack had a map of where the show was going but none of them knew from season to season if there would be another season of work so writing and even animation quality wasn't very consistent. Avatar sold a story rather than episodes, and that studio commitment allowed them to tell a story exactly how they wanted, retain talent intelligently, even get callbacks for old voice actors. It also got made during this voice acting renaissance where there many many amazing voice actors and studios who were really good at leveraging that talent.
This video just makes me wanna watch Avatar again. It was such a good cartoon! I've been meaning to watch it again. This vid also makes me wanna watch "The Legend of Korra". When it first aired, I watched like 2, maybe 3 episodes but I couldn't get into it. Maybe now I can. I heard it was canceled before airing the last few episodes on TV so they released the rest online. That's cool they didn't leave everyone hanging that actually liked it. Knowing this makes me think it wasn't that good but I still should give it another try.
the legend of korra went through a production hell. from problems at the start where Nickelodeon didn't like the idea of a female lead, to it being planned as a one season show to rapidly get renewed (which ended up with a not as good season 2, and also a change of studio as studio Pierrot took over studio Mir). Then it seemed like season 2 will be its last, but the show suddenly got renewed again for season 3 and 4. Having more time to plan everything out, season 3 and 4 are absolutely fantastic (however, episodes have been shortened for one or two minutes compared to season 1 and 2, which honestly does mean we lose about 12-24 minutes per season). And that was just a taste of what's to come, because despite season 3 being superior to season 2 and season 1, Nickelodeon cut the funding of season 4 in half, which is the reason for the infamous clip episode in season 4 (the creators had no choice; it was either to have people work without getting paid, or for them to get paid properly for the time spent working and save it by making a clip episode). On top of it, the show got moved online. In 2013 and 2014, watching shows online meant lower quality than TV, etc., and most people did not even know about it. Instead, they just thought that the show stopped airing. I hope you gave it a watch, because TLOK is a fantastic show
@@nelgluhak6709 actually I believe Studio Perriot stopped halfway through book 2 because the production was to much for their animators and Studio Mir did the rest of book 2 while also doing season 4 of the Boondocks
the bendings from the Avatar series and the hand techniques from the Naruto franchise will forever be the pinnacle of artistic skill-casting...both are just pure art
I've read a couple pages of the manga. The anime's art is levels above the original. They gave so much detail to characters and scenes the manga didn't.
I think I was seriously spoiled on ATLA as a kid. And not to mention Korra, I mean, the quality of the fight choreography is unlike any other show out there. I have a hard time now watching anything that doesn't meet their level of quality without having to stifle my short attention span lol. These shows are just on another level in almost every way.
How have I not come across a Full Metal Alchemist comment?! Transmutation artifacts, material morphing, amazing fire, smoke, fight scenes, beasts, monsters, story
Came here to make the same comment. Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is one of my two favorite anime of all time, the other being Avatar the Last Airbender, of course. Many, many other great ones out there, but these two take the cake for me.
Any of the battles involving Homunculi in FMAB are absolute animation marvels. There's a lot more that's still good, but those really demonstrate the peak of their animation (which is very high)
FMAB is the first anime series I watched to completion, and after 10 years of watching anime I think it's still the best I've seen, it just does everything so well. It's exceptionally well-rounded.
Jujutsu Kaizen has some of the most incredible fighting in concurrent Anime. It has so many elements I think it’s totally worth you guys analyzing its art.
I forgot to say: thanks for this episode corridor. After seeing this I decided to go watch avatar, and oh my lord this is my new favourite work of fiction! How can this show be so good?
One thing I loved about watching the fire fights in Avatar was that they would use artificial aperture racks. The fire would "blow out" the image, they would artificially rack the aperture closed and everything would get darker to compensate. They really nailed the fire in that show, in terms of making it real both with the brightness and the movements.
I’m so happy that avatar got the time that it really deserves and that there was a fellow fan to give them all the information about how thought out that show is
There is actually the same thought in Avatar the last Airbender. When Aang fights Toph. They assume Toph threw the match cause they couldn’t see her get hit with the air
Zuko and azulas fight was by far the best animation I had ever seen especially at the time. It was just beautiful. Also naruto shippuden is by far the best anime
Everything from Makoto Shinkai, like: Your Name, Garden of Words, Weathering with You. And Everything from Hayao Miyazaki, like: Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. THE ANIMATION IS AMAZING!!!!
I heard that FLCL had the same animation budget as Evangelion's 26 episode run packed into just 6 episodes, which is why it's so of the rails and a real visual treat. All Gainax productions are great, but I really recommend FLCL for visual appeal.
Hearing them talk about the process of cartoon animation in the west being animated in studio's in the East is SO interesting. I grew up watching shows like Swat Kats, Thunder cats, Captain Planet etc, and over the years through research learned that much of their episodes would be storyboarded here but sent overseas to be animated. I was always fascinated about that back and forth, realizing over time and more research that a lot of the reason was that animation studios in Korea and Japan were able to do a lot more with less. They could push the animation through the use of camera angles and extreme shots. Giving the show a more dynamic and intense feeling. It also looked smoother and movements were a lot sharper. Back then you would only really find that level of animation from a western studio for a movie or a motion picture. Not for a cartoon. It kind of changed the game of how cartoons in the West would be done and look.
Watching Garden of Words, I had to think "so where's the hot action?" ... Well, maybe not. As you've said, there's a lot of anime where action is NOT the focus, and IMO some of those shows are amongst the most impressive. They're also much rarer, as those sorts of shows are more commonly made as live-action. Makoto Shikai's catalogue and of course some of the lesser-known Ghibli movies (Whispers of the Heart, Ocean Waves) are good examples, but there are also series like Red Garden and Rumbling Hearts.
@@Nekotaku_TV Except, you know, comic books, movies, short films, cartoons, novels, short stories, and every other form of story telling ever made. I like anime too but it's not the only story telling medium that spans genres lmao

FMA is probably one of the few animes out there that gives a damn about grounding their characters. Probably because Arakawa is a god at character writing.
If you're gonna watch clips from Avatar TLA, you gotta watch the kids storm the Earth Kingdom palace. The long take of Toph and Aang deflecting earthbender attacks is fricking *chefs kiss*
Dude could literally not be more wrong on the head squeezing scene. Anticipation was so intense. We had no idea where it was going. And that was the turning point of the show letting us know its not gonna be a normal cartoon.
Maybe his skull should be visually getting crushed not just have an eye popping out. The head itself was rigid the whole time, I think he was talking about the head. Yeah the glasses shattering is a nice touch, but they could have done more because the head hardly moves in my opinion.
They're not saying the scene is bad, quite the opposite in fact. THey're pointing out how despite clear budget restrictions, they still put out a quality show.
The opening sequence of the film *_Paprika_* is absolutely unparalleled when it comes to animation, and I still can't help but be impressed by it no matter how many times I've watched it.
- Demon Slayer episode 19, "Hinokami" scene always takes my breath away. - Princess Mononoke, final scene in front of the lake is visceral and haunting. - Cowboy Bebop, first episode fight scene perfectly captures the whimsical yet deadly nature of Spike Spiegel. - Attack on Titan, Season 2, episode 11, Charge, Mikasa's fight. Evangelion.
I mean besides season 2 I honestly think Korra is a great show, but it had to follow up what is considered the greatest advancement in American Cartoons
@@woodie8946 Agree. They fucked up hard on season 2 (and in the end of season 1 when Aang just fixed everything, we could have a great recovery journey in season 2 if they believed that they would get another season) but the rest has great. Seasons 3 and 4 are just amazing. The other problem has the constant comparasion with ATLA (and to be fair they tried to capitalize on it), which you will always lose.
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. It is a masterpiece in EVERY WAY. Animation, story, music, characters, fight scenes, world building. Every part of it is beautiful. It is an essential anime. And the best.
FLCL is a smorgasbord of animation styles, music, and raw energy in six 20 minute episodes. It's a work of art. Also +1 all the mentions of Cowboy Bebop.
I think even just ep1 of FLCL would be a very cool breakdown because it has so many of those styles and call out moments they could highlight and go into.
Wren’s “Oh…” in the Omni-Man video killed me. Gosh, I love this show. I think they should check out the first Hinokami Kagura scene (Tanjiro vs Rui) from Demon Slayer.
The animation in Your Name is incredible. There’s so much emotionality and beauty in every shot, and they recreated actual shots of Tokyo for a lot of the scenes.
It will never happen again probably. Idk which interview it was, but apparently the animation director, Shingo Natsume, called in favors from the time he worked at other studios as a freelance (including JCStaff, season 2s animation studio) from talented people that allowed the already start studded MADHouse team, mixed in with Natsume knowing how much time to give his animators made season 1. The amount of money they would have had to spend if they wanted to keep all those people for the 2nd season would have been near a movie budget. I was sad with season 2, and even Natsume was kind of bashing them since he knows given enough time JC can make really good animation, but sadly their director and people with money wanted to rush them while hype was high instead of delay it (plus Natsume wanted to stay as director which he could have since he Is freelance, let's hope season 3 they put him back in since he's in love with the project)
@@Julio-Ces4r Yeah, different studio did that one, but still beter than many other shows, but you feel like your still missing out of something better.
would add Wolfschildren Ame and Yuki, Penguin Highway and Garden of Words to the list. maybe take a look at Fate/Zero, Great Pretender, Kaguya-hime no Monogatari, Tiger & Bunny and Puella Magi Madoka Magica as well as Mob Pysch 100 for a different visual style.
it's rare to see 3d and 2d animation put together in a away that doesnt look weird and janky when they touch (as in a fully 2d and a fully 3d interaction) but ATLA and korra did it really well, the characters look grounded when they're touching or interacting with 3d objects like a vehicle
Honestly to me it seemed a bit weird, i felt there a need for a bit of human imperfect touch, but it's just my opinion and it's still the best show there is(again for me personally). And in addition i just wanted to say that basically all backgrounds in 3d animations are 2d. It's easier to draw a hill than 3d model it and paint its texture for example
I think it's far easier to enhance 3D with 2D than vice versa. Into the Spiderverse, Meet the Mitchells and Arcane are all fantastic examples of 3D being enhanced through 2D. On the other hand, the highly stylized effects of Demon Slayer is the only example off the top of my head where 3D unequivocally enhanced 2D. In most cases (both Avatar series included), 3D is just a cost cutting measure. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
ATLA did a lot of very sensible things from the outset that made Avatar such a good animated series. It was mentioned that they brought in martial artists to show the different styles, what they actually did was train all the animators in those styles. When they introduced other characters that didn't fall in the normal styles they picked new ones, like Toph using Southern Praying Mantis instead of the usual Hung Gar Kuen, as well as May, Tai Lee and Suki. The directors gave the animators lots of freedom to push the choreography as far as they wanted within the magic system, a few times they sparked story points for the show like bloodbending or the flying with fire. They also made it very clear that there should be no pauses in animation, something is always moving in frame to make it feel alive. There's only a few times it pauses entirely but for dramatic effect, like when they do the hand holding after toph says "do you really think friendships can last longer than one lifetime?" and it stops for as it waits for Sokka to join.
One thing they did that's just on another level is that different characters fight/bend differently both from each other and themselves as they progress along their character arcs. Zuko at the very beginning of the show bends quite differently from Zuko at the end of the show, with his more fluid styles and movements showing both a greater mastery of firebending and a change in who he is as a person, not to mention that he's picked up different techniques from other bending styles. Azula's bending is quite different once she snaps, being far less precise and calculated.
I’m surprised that you didn’t mention it in detail: ATLA used reference material for the bending scenes performed by sifu kisu, the consultant for the show. The character of Piandao was designed to look like him.
I have always felt that ATLA had such great fight scenes partly because of how the animators conveyed the sense of balance. You know when a character is solidly planted vs when they are slipping and why much better than most other cartoons, even most anime.
Avatar was ahead of its time. it really does well for introducing people into anime, even though many dont consider it. its impact, its community and commitment to telling a diverse story with many ethnic groups really is beautiful
Well, I think the problem comes from the connotation of what is meant when the term "anime" is used. Usually that's referring to Japanese animation, or I suppose any other Asian cartoon specifically, and I think that's where you'll see the problem. Avatar is technically "anime", especially when we consider it was animated in Korea, and if we want to refer to its short-hand of the word "animation" or otherwise a cartoon, but many people generally think of the Japanese variety when that term is used and simply use "cartoon" or "animation" to describe everything else.

I have a hard time now watching anything that doesn't meet their level of quality without having to stifle my short attention span lol. These shows are just on another level in almost every way.
Cowboy Bebop: Neo spaghetti western, story, space, Jazz....so good

How have I not come across a Full Metal Alchemist comment?! Transmutation artifacts, material morphing, amazing fire, smoke, fight scenes, beasts, monsters, story
Magic battles, military battles, plain old hand to hand fighting, comedy, tragedy, failure and redemption. Pretty much the perfect anime.
Came here to make the same comment. Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is one of my two favorite anime of all time, the other being Avatar the Last Airbender, of course.
Many, many other great ones out there, but these two take the cake for me.
I feel like it’s really underrated even though it’s not
Any of the battles involving Homunculi in FMAB are absolute animation marvels.

After seeing this I decided to go watch avatar, and oh my lord this is my new favourite work of fiction! How can this show be so good?
Mob Psycho 100 is definitely an anime I’d like to see y’all cover.
Animators reaction to Mob Psycjo would be insane
Wren: what do you think is the best anime?
Niko: do you realize what you've done?!
Ayyy, nice to see some Russians up here.
Niko did the "honki desuka"...
Would love to see a break down of Mob Psycho 100, I love how they do the super powered action and all the different art styles
There's something to be said when Mob goes ??? and everything is a bunch of crude art lines. It's oddly very strong.

MY BOI SPEAKING TRUTH OUT HERE. Thank you for the acknowledgement for TTGL, which is heavily underrated.
I heard that FLCL had the same animation budget as Evangelion's 26 episode run packed into just 6 episodes, which is why it's so of the rails and a real visual treat. All Gainax productions are great, but I really recommend FLCL for visual appeal.
The MadHouse production 'Paprika' is one of the most insane animations I've ever seen and is definitely worth reacting to

Agreed, less know but really a good product
I love how Wren basically had a surprised Pikachu face when they started looking at Invincible
It's called being surprised!
Anime is animation done in Japan, but it doesn't have to be energy or action based. That genre is Shonen anime
Yeah... anime can literally be any genre. That's why it's like nothing else.

Mob psycho 100 is a diamond mine for animation. The animation combined with that art style is glorious 🤤
I was sad with season 2, and even Natsume was kind of bashing them since he knows given enough time JC can make really good animation, but sadly their director and people with money wanted to rush them while hype was high instead of delay it (plus Natsume wanted to stay as director which he could have since he Is freelance, let's hope season 3 they put him back in since he's in love with the project)

it's rare to see 3d and 2d animation put together in a away that doesnt look weird and janky when they touch (as in a fully 2d and a fully 3d interaction) but ATLA and korra did it really well, the characters look grounded when they're touching or interacting with 3d objects like a vehicle
Honestly to me it seemed a bit weird, i felt there a need for a bit of human imperfect touch,
but it's just my opinion and it's still the best show there is(again for me personally).
@@Falllll Yes you're absolutely correct, and they did this early on too with Zuko vs Zaho.
I’m surprised that you didn’t mention it in detail:
ATLA used reference material for the bending scenes performed by sifu kisu, the consultant for the show.
The character of Piandao was designed to look like him.
I have always felt that ATLA had such great fight scenes partly because of how the animators conveyed the sense of balance. You know when a character is solidly planted vs when they are slipping and why much better than most other cartoons, even most anime.
I love that Wren is horrifed at what he sees in Invincble.
Shoot I'm horrified too.
First time I saw the episode I just kept yelling "What? What is happening right now?"
Anime fans be like,"First time?"
I feel bad for him that he didn't watch the episode and have that surprise at the end. I'd rank that as a top 10 first episode cliffhanger/twist.
Having read the entire series, I can tell you .. you haven't seen anything yet ... it gets crazier.
