This is a very personal story about my 58+ year struggle with diets. I was put on a diet by my father at the age of 10 and my self image never truly recovered until recently. Diets in the 60's, 70's and 80"s ruled my life.
Maybe some of you can relate. Please let me know if you can. I now follow a whole food plant based lifestyle and don't struggle with diets and poor self image anymore.

All the “diet” programs you discussed were very familiar to me as well sadly. I remember going on Atkins diet and lost about 20 lbs at around age 13 and have been battling my weight for 50 yrs with dozens and dozens of various programs over the years. I would loose and gain repeatedly - a true crazy cycle. We went WFPB going on 5 yrs now and haven’t looked back as this makes so much sense. I’m in the process of “tightening” up on the calorically dense foods and getting the last of my weight off finally. Its truly a freedom getting away from the traditional “diet” mentality. Thank you for the continued inspiration.

    Chef Julia ,
First thank you for telling the diet journey you have been on. I can so relate to most of what you talked about. Especially your time one the military. I too served in the Air Force from 1985-2005. That’s when my restrictive eating mindset started.
I’ve done Weight Watchers, Eat Clean, low fat, cabbage soup diet, protein shakes. It wasn’t until I found you on Facebook in 2021 that I embraced this concept of daily dozen. It not always been easy my spouse isn’t keen to follow. Recently you posted about that and how you handle that. Game changer for me.
I enjoy living my life and not feeling starved or always thinking about food.
Thank you for all you do and sharing your recipes and talking about your journey. So very helpful and insightful. 💕🙏

Good Morning. My husband is supportive, but not willing to follow this lifestyle. You mention Chef Julia has a post on that subject. I’m interested in reading it, is that on Facebook? Thanks for your help!

This was timely for me. Our stories are similar-a lifetime of yo-yo dieting around the same sizes and time frames as well. I am 58 just starting on the WFPB journey. I am enrolled in the research study at PCRM for reversing diabetes through WFPB and it starts on Sat. I am excited to start my journey and relieved that it is not a diet but a long term lifestyle bc I too have been on every diet plan and would lose 20-50 lbs and then regain-ughhhhh-frustrating. It was really great to hear your story I have seen you on Chef AJ and enjoyed your cooking presentation. I just started following you and hoping to get some cooking advice bc I don’t feel confident with anything but very basic stuff which is ok for now but will want to expand. Thanks again for your story it really helped me 😊

Thank you, Julia, for sharing your story. I, too, have tried so many different diets in my 77 years, and, finally, two months ago have found WFPB, no SOS. This feels right to me, and I am grateful. May all beings be well❤

Hi Julia, I too from the age of 10 have embarked on the road of crazy diets. In a time where thinness was revered it was hard being a woman with curves. The cycle of loosing and then gaining even more weight than what was lost, creating a journey of never liking my body. In 2019 after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and having a severe reaction to the drug I was placed on (and ended up in hospital) my doctor suggested that I try to treat my diabetes with diet and exercise. What diet? There was no guidance there. I found a medical paper published on the internet of how the best diet for a diabetic was a plant based diet. The journey to wellness begun. I found Dr Gregor “How not to Diet book” I lost 50 pounds and have reversed my diabetes for 3 years now. All numbers from blood work are excellent. The doctor said if he could give a gold star he would. My blood pressure is 120/72. It is however a lonely walk and was looking for a community when I found your channel. My weight loss stalled at 182 and will in future follow your example of following more closely the daily dozen and increase exercise frequency. Thank you Julia. I feel like Weight Watchers has done a disservice to everyone. I reached goal twice, and never kept it off. My husband tried with me once, and I remember being able to eat 5 hotdogs for a dinner meal. And often after weigh-in, we’d go to Poppin’ Fresh’ for pie ala mode!. Crazy! And when I look at the history of my diet books, and the ones I see at the second hand store, I feel like they’re all ones I’d seen on Oprah!

If you subtract the military and kids, we lived parallel lives. I graduated in 1970, so we lived in the same Era. Every parent child-shaming story I endured, every wacko diet, that God awful protein liquid, Metrical, Ayds, we even went on some bizarre diet that we took safflower oil capsules, and drenched everything we cooked in oil. Yep, been there, done that!
And, yes!! fen-fen. It's wondered we didn't drop dead

Hi Chef Julia. Thank you for sharing your diet/weight loss struggles, career changes and ultimately success by incorporating the Daily Dozen. I found it all very interesting. I can relate to the weight loss struggles and various diets. I too am 68 years old and grew up in the same era. Donuts and pastries from The Helms Bakery truck and ice cream from The Good Humor truck that frequented our neighborhood regularly. I am the youngest with two older brothers that never struggled with their weight. I was a chubby child and an obese adult. I’m 5’3” and my highest weight was 192. I tried Weight Watchers, Atkins, Jenny Craig, etc. and never could sustain the plan or weight loss. Finally after my divorce (32 years of marriage), I was able to lose about 50 lbs just by eating better, exercising and concentrating on myself and my health. A little time with a therapist didn’t hurt either. Lol. After all that, I was stuck at 140 for several years. Like you, concerned about the heart disease and cancer that ran in our family, I knew I needed to get my cholesterol and blood pressure In check. I also had some bouts with anxiety during Covid. I started reading about WFPB lifestyle and decided to try it in January 2021. I started it wholeheartedly, no transition and haven’t looked back. I now stay between 120-122lbs. , my cholesterol went from 269 to 114, triglycerides 193 to 78. I too have to continue a low dose of blood pressure medication. Sorry for the long story. This is the first time I’ve shared mine, your video inspired me. Hopefully your story and mine will inspire someone else to give this lifestyle a try. Thank you, your recipes are delicious and you are so genuine.

Thank you for disclosing your food history. I have been on a whole food plant based diet for over six years now. It is a very satisfying way of eating. I have a daughter-in-law who is Japanese from Kobe and I have ordered your Japanese cookbook and am eagerly awaiting a reprinting as there are none available right now. I think my family which includes gorgeous grandchildren will be excited to eat your recipes. Thank you.

Wow, quite the story Chef Julia! I am a couple of years older than you but have tried many diets as well over the years
The one that worked the best was ideal protein but very restrictive
Saw The Gamechangers in 2020 and have been on the WFPB path ever since
Still want to lose 5-8 pounds but know how as we still have some processed food for snacking
Might try your 21 day challenge
Your 5 miles and your weight training are quite impressive
Best of luck for your continued success

Hiding , lying and stealing food was a painful part of my childhood as well. This stress around food and weight wreaked havoc on my relationship with my mother. This relational pattern eventually invaded all my relationships in the family. Your story sadly mimicked my childhood as well. Hard to listen to but grateful to revisit the issue.

Thank you for sharing your story. I struggle with food and over eating and have been trying to “ease into” a wfpb no oil - but maybe the way is to dive in and to try the daily dozen as a challenge. And maybe I too can find the motivation to stick with it. My husband resents that we are not 20 anymore & cannot eat whatever we want & this makes it hard - plus my own feelings about that & yet… this is a truth we have to come to terms with. But I weigh far too much & I think this way of eating can help my issues with pancreatitis and aches & pains. So going to pull out my copy of How Not to Die and try this challenge 🤞🏻🤞🏻Thank you. ❤️

Thank you for sharing your life history with dieting. I’ve been through much of the same. But I especially appreciated hearing that just going WFPB no oil is not a perfect answer to keeping the weight off either. I thought something was wrong with me. Why was I not skinny like the 30 something influencers I watch constantly? Your approach makes so much more sense to me.

Your childhood sounded a lot like mine except mother had 5 children. She owned a beautiful small Cafe in Waco and my father owned 4 service stations. They worked all the time and we ate fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy. Salad covered in salad dressing. Because that's what I knew to Cook. I was the oldest. My father had me on a diet all the time and I had to exercise at night when he was at home and before bed. I was at 180 at 13 yrs old. We had a ice cream truck in The neighborhood also. Banana ice cream bars and chocolate fudge bars. Lol lol.

    Hi Chef Julia,
You are a very inspiring lady. I had many similar things in my life. ( my mom was a thin culinary art teacher… we ate the french standard diet mix with some north American food) I tried too many diets. In 2015, I saw a video of Chef AJ and watched forks over knives and went completely plant based. For a while it worked very well but I could not keep the weight down (i slipped and did the 17 day diet in 2020). No one in my surroundings eats like i do. In French Canadian Quebec, vegan is not super popular… im 5’7'’ and always hover around 170 pounds.
Im going to try the daily dozen.
Im fed at work and there is so much temptation its like a cruise buffet every day… but thanks for this sunday morning pep talk😉

Love love love your transparency!!! Thank you so much for sharing your story. Fortunately most of my life I’ve not had to diet but I’d say after my 2nd pregnancy at age 35 I started to carry weight. I’m 52 now and it’s getting more difficult as you’ve explained. I wholeheartedly believe in WFPB but I need to still step it up with the Daily Dozen like you have. You’re on to something!!! Wow your stor was so interesting. I never dreamed you went through so much with dieting. I’ll be tuning in again real soon. These years our boys are teenagers sure keeps us busy but we need to prioritize our health too. Thank you again for sharing. You’re truly an inspiration

    Hi Chef Julia,
Thank you for your story! I just found your channel this morning and I appreciate your transparency and openness.
Although I have not struggled with “official” diets and their destructive cycles, I have been overweight most of my life, and have not had the best relationship with food. The elementary school I attended had dance classes for the girls as the PE class. And I remember in the 80s when we were introduced to the concept of ideal weight charts. Our dance teacher was a petite, very thin woman in her 20s and she was introducing us to the idea that for our height, there was a perfect weight. It was disheartening to say the least, but now, as I look back on all of that, it also angers me that at a time when girls *and* boys are supposed to be gaining weight they are being encouraged to lose it to fit an arbitrary ideal (ordeal is more like it)!
Something you didn’t mention in your video that plays a huge role in our weight over a life span is hormones…there are just times in our lives, especially as women, when healthy weight gain is vital. Although we still have a way to go, I’m so grateful that more stress is being placed on overall health rather than that one number on the scale.
I’ve subscribed and look forward to viewing more of your videos.
    Blessings,
    Erika

Hi Julia, So sad what parents do and say to their kids. I don’t think I was made to feel like that by my parents. BUT, I did feel like that, when I went to College, my roommates and friends were size 0 to 7. I like you was size 11 then went to 13… My story is so close to yours, as many are.
Sad, how many of us have a pull and push relationship with food. Nothing better than feeling you are in control! 🙏
