Looks like the university where I got my degree 15 years ago listened to this lady. They've stopped hiring white men, and are for the time being hiring only colored and/or female persons for management and teaching positions. Of course this made it difficult to fill those positions, so they gallantly lowered a few of the requirements to make it more accessable for those with less experience. I'm so glad I get to live to see the day where my experience and competence finally come second to my skin color and gender. There is nothing quite as wonderful as reading "white men not welcome" on a university function. Really makes me cheer for this brave, diverse wonderland we're creating.
So, you are upset because in your mind (rather real or not) that you cannot get a job at your university because of your skin color? This now gives you some insight into one aspect of being a minority. Also, the fact that you used the word "colored" tells me a lot about your mindset.
That real consequences talk was scary, I hope I'm getting it wrong. Does she mean firing owner or shutting down business when it's more than 70% white? So, if I own a family business of 10, do I have to fire 3 of my relatives just for my revenue to grow? Does she mean I could get fined or loose my businesses if I refuse to do that? What if there's no competent person of minority applying for a job at my company, do I have to hire underskilled worker or leave that space vacant until some competent non white person shows up? This idea seems a little crazy. Also, I highly doubt Google would do better if they fired most of Asians that work there.
Exactly. This Talk never defined what consequences are but always made them sound terrifying and a primary incentive to change. I would like some clarity as to what they are and how they would be enforced because it sounds very fascist to impose external consequences on private entities.

Diversity is another word for discrimination. If there are 50 open positions from dishwashers to CEO’s. The person best “QUALIFIED” to fill said position should be offered the job.
A perspective coming from a multi-generationally mixed detribalized Indigenous & Spanish person from Mexico (born: East Oakland Ca.): It’s important to become more aware of what “diversity” & “inclusion” actually means in our society and the impact it can have on marginalized communities because to some it literally just means more forced assimilation. Consider specifically the “inclusion” part and ask: WHAT are we actually referring to when it comes to “inclusion” & WHY? And “diversity” for WHO and WHAT space? These words can feel invasive and can trigger heavy discomforts, especially for those who are reconnecting with their roots or Decolonizing. There’s knowledge and research as to why that is, but it’s a fairly new subject being discussed within abolition movements. This is one of the main reasons why I myself find it overwhelmingly difficult to apply myself to any field of work or creative arts space, it’s because of “diversity” & “inclusion” efforts, in a world where white supremacy is at it’s foundation… to me, “diversity” and “inclusion” just means more forced assimilation. It’s not an obvious thing to realize and it’s hard to acknowledge, we all have to unlearn and learn new things if we are to genuinely embrace community. And I think instead of saying “diversity” and “inclusion”, I feel more comfortable saying: to embrace community. Isn’t that the goal anyway?
Also, “Hispanic” is still not a race… We all still need to learn not to generalize people and group them into dehumanizing terms of erasure, it’s 2022 y’all, we can do better.
@Petra H lol, than it's not a problem of diverity or race, but simply your government lacks of proper funding and infrastructure to educate people in need.

Affirmative action & the rooney rule are controversial. I think they can be a helpful tool to help equalize an unequal world. The quotas would be to ensure you don't have a homogenous workplace. It is in the companies best interest to have diverse employees for innovation. It is a natural human tendency to feel most comfortable with people that are like you. If you think Diversity and Inclusion is simply just Races, Sexuality, Genders, Ethnicities all working together. You aren't diverse enough. If you think Diversity and Inclusion is different opinions, thoughts, politics, cultural ideals working together. Than you are absolutely diverse.
As a conventionally 'diverse' person, I'd feel insulted if an employer was hiring me or kept me in the business solely because I was 'diverse'. People should be hired or kept employed or promote solely on their skills and talent. How has it even come to this?
I've never seen anything improve in any aspect of my life thanks to diversity or inclusion. I've seen it improve when people of good character and ability get hired.
Diversity is bigger than race. Research has shown, again and again, that diversity in business is GOOD for profits, customer retention, and other metrics. Did you see the part around 7:00? It's not about checking a box, it's about bringing different perspectives and lived experiences into an organization, along with the relevant technical skills needed for the job. Diversity and inclusion doesn't have to be a values-driven goal; it's good for the bottom line.

When I worked as an engineer at GE, we were in a hiring phase and the VP of Engineering called me in his office and said if Ben is a 9/10 and Harold a 6/10, we need to hire Harold. Harold is black. In this instance, diversity mandated by GE executives was racist against the white guy who also applied for the job. This is a practice done by large corporations which by very definition is racist.
People should really tone down this race and diversity crap a bit, from what I have seen if you are good at your workplace whether be it with skills or character you are always accepted and loved by the peers... And yes if any workplace has a preference with regard to race, gender or anything at all why are you so concerned, just move on, you would always find an other place of work thats more welcoming
I can tell ya, where I work, there are only two things that matter: competence and how you act towards you peers. Or like you said, skill and character. Even if someone black like the night would want to work here, he will be welcome. OK, we will have to get used to a guy like that, but thats the normal irritation you will feel if you encounter something from outside your cultural reference. Thats not racism since if he deliver the proof that he is willing and capable to bear the same load, he will be one of us in no time. If he is lazy, he will be fired in no time. Over the years I saw a lot of them, all mouth and no trowsers, and guess what, all of them where white like me and all shared the same trait: incompetence and a big mouth. In a vacuum, yes. But let's be real here: companies with the greatest advantage are the least motivated to change. And some 5-person company with it's peasly 30% productivity boost is still not going to be able to compete with Microsoft. The problem is, new can't compete with established. And established isn't diverse. Because so many established businesses have a self-perpetuating monoculture, you can't just wait for that established culture to change on its own. It's got no reason to. And that's true whether what's established is a bunch of old white men or a bunch of one-legged breast cancer survivors who don't like cilantro. It doesn't matter what the group is, it's always hard to break in to an established culture *even if you have something valuable to offer*. I learned this myself when I was hiring. I'm not intentionally sexist. But as the only woman in a technology company, when I was able to hire an assistant, I found myself thinking "gosh, I wish I could have another woman to work with. We just see things the same way and it's so much easier to get things done". Yeah, well, that's why it was so hard to get hired in the first place. I get it now. We all want to work with people like us, because it's easier. Even if it's ultimately "less productive". That's why you can't just fix this by waiting, and why "30% more productive" means diddly squat unless you're in a lab environment.

A perspective coming from a multi-generationally mixed detribalized Indigenous & Spanish person from Mexico (born: East Oakland Ca.):
It’s important to become more aware of what “diversity” & “inclusion” actually means in our society and the impact it can have on marginalized communities because to some it literally just means more forced assimilation.
Also, “Hispanic” is still not a race…
We all still need to learn not to generalize people and group them into dehumanizing terms of erasure, it’s 2022 y’all, we can do better.

@@VolkColopatrion this diversity is NON ORGANIC. Most Americans DID NOT ASK, NOR CARE for it. It is being FORCED UPON US UNFAIRLY. We will push back soon:)
TED is a fetid garbage dumpster. Full of "ideas" not worth spreading.
America is more diverse that 90% of all other countries...
@Midgard Creative Studio what's not going well?
If you think those are "race" riots, you haven't seen true riots.
Where is the problem with self segregation?
@Midgard Creative Studio you think this problem comes from the fact that there is diversity? That's like blaming food poisoning on the fact that there's food.
Why do we only bring up diversity in white countries. But diversity in the Middle East, South America, Africa and Asia are exceptions.
If I had to make a guess mate it would be that not many people want to go there, and if they do they enjoy normally enjoy a financial and social status above the norm.
I think also that these countries do have their own conversations on race an equality but we don't hear them and even if we did they'd be in another language so they don't make the international News. Brazil I think has conversation on this and south africa also, both I think have a majority black population
Because it's a anti white movement
@@thegrumpygeordie9007 Nobody tells or expects the Chinese, Japanese, Koreans or Mexicans to be diverse. I don't think we should force it on White European countries either!
@@joejohnson2478 yes l've just in fact finished reading The War on the West, which opened my eyes on this subject. Racist remarks are only acceptable when aimed at white people. Its a disturbing president
@@thegrumpygeordie9007 You are 100 spot on. My awakening came from my work environment where I was the minority. Besides the comments I've witnessed bad decision making which is why, making the same salary, did better than most financially than my co workers. Because of my privilege I had to pay more for a home to live in an area away from them. Twenty two years including forced overtime was more than enough exposure for me. It's actually they that are less tolerant of others and not the baloney you hear from the news or from politicians.
Just C.R.T. with a different name.
Could you perchance provide an academic reference for the study in which you quote as having shown that 30% is the critical mass number for underrepresented groups' voices to be heard? (I would like to include this in a grant application so I need a more robust published reference to cite). Thank you!
I have seen studies that show that happens on a civic level when a minority meets a critical mass of numbers they begin to demand more political power. Not sure about a private workplace.
What place is Christianity given in this movement
KSA or DIE.
If you’re a government worker or a veteran that has applied for a government job your qualifications are based upon KSA = Knowledge,
Skills, Ability.
DIE = Diversity, Inclusion, Equity (Equity is not the same as Equality) does nothing to prove an individual’s Knowledge, Skills and
Ability to do the job.
If a company feels compelled to add a DIE hiring manager or change their company logo to rainbow colors to pander to the LGBTQ group or DIE group, it’s perceived as patronizing and thus that company may have had prior discriminatory hiring practices.
Bottom line…any public or private company that discriminates against a person’s race, religion, sexual orientation, political affiliation,
economic status, veteran status or disability is in violation of State and Federal employment laws. KSA or DIE. Teach your children well.
Hey I'm not white, hire me !
Bullshit
30 seconds in and this woman has already shown shes not going to be using any form of logic
Having heard the talk, where the preamble was peppered with some cheap jibes and only reinforced the speaker's "conscious bias", my answer to the elongated monologue is staring most people in the face:
Hire the best person for the job.
Put the best player in the team.
Encourage all students to achieve, but only send the best to university.
So simple - so easy to do - so equal and non-discriminatory.
Where's the problem with doing that?
I would not be happy to be put into a job purely because of my skin tone - that is patronising.
Why would you want diversity in the workplace? How about just hiring whoever can do the job the best? I guess that would make too much sense.
If having a "diverse" business brings ~30% more productivity, wouldn't that necessarily put any non-diverse company out of business that was their competition?
Yeah, but this would mean that the problem this racist lady is talking about might solve itself due to market meachanics, IF this is true. Then there is no need to force anything, but unfortunatly, then this lady also would have no reason to make such a fuss. Sounds fishy if you ask me. Or she is just another leftist driven by the urge to seek power, fueld by her delusions.
That ought to be true *unless* there is 0% change in productivity which would then mean that she is right. That has yet to be proven though.
@@PawsByZann Who do you think companies like Apple have in their think tanks creating new products. That's why they operate in China so they are not told or forced to be diverse because that would set them back. That's why many companies manufacture abroad if the truth be known!
@@joejohnson2478 So... you think large companies like Apple go to China because they specifically want an all-Chinese workforce and don't have to diversify? And not because labour is a fraction of the cost?
Apple and others can benefit from working conditions that would be illegal here and get massive savings... doesn't it seem like a stretch to you to say they're going overseas to avoid diversity?
"I graduated"
*Gets applauded*
Zach Kelly Because the audience were picked from diversity hires.
@Dack Hacksaw fam the obj. is to fight them with logic not outright hatred. The liberals use our reasonable disgust with them as an excuse to stop listening.
@Dack Hacksaw I dislike this talk as much as anyone else, but this comment is vile an disgusting even as a joke.
Janet, I loved your talk and understand where you come from. Organizations need a lot of intentionality in building an inclusive workplace. It won't happen on its own. I wonder why do we have so many nasty comments. Do they even understand what minorities have been going through?
We understand what you are going through. We’ve all been there. You aren’t special just because your momma squeezed out a blaq kid.
Hey, lady - "I have a dream that one day I will live in a nation where I will not be judged by the color of my skin, but by the content of my character.....I have a dream."
Thank you!!
Believing this requires believing that every person that hasn't succeeded has been held back by someone else. You can't do better unless you find the right person to blame. Others are conspiring to keep you down. Your parents are responsible for the way you are. You're a victim and deserve special treatment. People like you were wronged and you deserve compensation. "They've" gotten theirs'; it's high time you got yours. Or, the devil made you do it.
Those are their mantras.
Not everyone has been held back by others but many people have. And it's not one singular person holding everybody back, it's the system at large, which are mostly unfair to many people. In other words blame the system/game, not the players.
Every one have to be assessed by IQ , I mean by brain abilities, who is the best, have to take a job without any diversity and inclusion. On the other hand, a color of skin and gender cannot effect on an employer. Only IQ and professionalism.
You're going to get some mad people thinking that way. Bell curve exists for a reason and if you went by IQ and brain ability alone, this lady probably wouldn't be talking right now.
Ty
I'm so sick of these people who seem to value diversity over excellence. If they want to go after something that is non-diverse, try the National Basketball Association.
NBA Players/employees do not have the power of owners, whose staff select and hire the players/employees.
93.4% of the NBA teams are owned by people classified as white; players are 74.2% African American (2020 stats).
Players, who out number owners, do not control operations.
Same conditions exist on a global scale. People classified as white comprise 10% +/- of the global population yet are the equivalent aren't to the NBA owners in impact on global operations.

This is NOT racism. It's just good sense.
Where'd all the scientific discovery stuff go TED?
You all are lucky; I have to write a report on this.
Can someone define the word "racism" for her?
Very easy to do a talk to a tamed audience. Where they already agree with you
*Diversity doesn't increase productivity, hiring based on merit does.*
The company I work for is so serious about diversity that we can now only hire women and people of color. Recently I had a role open up, and the most qualified applicant for the role was a male applicant but I was not allowed to interview him for the role. We had to hire a female, who just didn't have the same qualifications and experience. Since my company has taken diversity and inclusion more seriously, it has become more segregated, more biased and more prejudiced than it ever was before.
