Great video! I have all TPBs. I’ve read comics all my life and Montress still feels complicated. Every time there’s new TPB I feel like I need to re-read all previous ones to get back on tracks. But it’s done so well I enjoy that part too. As you said creators are not holding readers hand. If you want to experience the very opposite style comic book fantasy see Step By Bloody Step by Spurrier and Bergara. It’s has zero dialogue. Beautiful art and beautiful story. It has an ending which makes you want to read it again.
Yeah that’s true, I have some issues to catch up on and I’m going to have to at least flick through what happened before so I’m not completely lost. Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll check it out!
Stumbled across this (great) essay after stumbling actoss Monstress, then binging all eight TPBs! Why this doesnt this series have 10 times the hype associated with it?
I find it so baffling! It’s a great series with critical acclaim, but it seems to fly under the radar in terms of mainstream popularity. I’m glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for your nice comment :)
Yes! Love Monstress! I've collected all the TPBs so I don't know if I can justify buying those HC Omnibus editions. But for Sana's art... might be worth it.
Somebody else who loves Monstress! The art really warrants the larger format I think, but they are definitely an investment. The good news is that the first one has been in print for 3+ years now so I don’t think there’s a rush if you did want to think about it. Thanks for watching!
Yolanda, you've sold me. A series I've been curious about for almost a decade now, I think I became aware of it about the same time as Saga, and being a broke college student at the time, I stuck with Saga. I've become pretty jaded with Superhero comics (I still enjoy some of Big 2 like Superman, Nightwing, Daredevil) but give me Invincible or Astro City most days over them now and I'm pretty under read with a lot of Image's best output like East of West, Rat Queens, Descender etc. Any other recs?
I feel the same about a lot of superhero comics to be honest. I think if you like Saga you might also like Brian K Vaughan’s Paper Girls (a whackier and more creative Stranger Things, in my opinion). I haven’t read Descender but Carlos loved it! Kieran Gillen’s One and Future is also great (that’s a Boom one)
I have the first three TPBs and Book Two... But I'm so tempted to get Book One too!

I'm curious if you've read Saga? Monstress is incredible. Another great one that's more recent is Feral.
I have read Saga and loved it! Haven’t heard of Feral, thanks for the recommendation!
I primarily read manga, and I love it. Im definitely going to check this one out!
I think it might be right up your alley! Hope you enjoy :)
