    Jokes aside, trying to tell someone's entire life story in the span of 2 hours is almost impossible. That's one mistake I always see with these musician biopics: Trying to cram too much story into too little of a timeframe. You can't tell the entire history of Queen and Freddie Mercury in 2 hours. You just can't.
    These biopics would work so much better if they were just a snapshot of a certain period in the artist's story. For example: If a Metallica biopic ever happened, you can easily make a 2-hour movie that only follows them from their formation up until the release of Kill 'Em All. There's so much you can cover in that time period, like Lars promising Brian Slagel a song for his album even though he didn't have a band yet, discovering Cliff Burton at a Trauma gig, hiring Dave Mustaine, firing Dave Mustaine, discovering Kirk, James losing his mom, etc. And it would make for a very focused story that doesn't feel like a rushed highlight reel.
    Trying to rush through an entire band/artist's history in only 120-150 minutes worth of screentime feels vapid and rarely ever works.

      This is a wonderful example, and I've been saying it for ages - either make a miniseries or focus on a specific era. I also think it would be more creative to emphasise themes in a story; a primary theme in Rocketman is Elton's struggle with self-identity, for instance.

    Love & Mercy is an amazing movie (it's about Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys) and so is Control (which is about Joy Division's Ian Curtis). Both films tackle their respective stories tastefully and bluntly. Not much in the way of hollywood musician biopic schlock... though both tug at your heart strings with the very real pain of the films' subjects and those around them.

    I completely agree. If it's a comedy like the Pick of Destiny then it works since Jack Black is a comedian and can play into the stereotypes of the rock and metal genre. However, the issue is with these Biopics is that it's a bunch board room executives creating the exact template without doing much research on the musicians personal lives.

    • @themetalmeltdownofficial
      @themetalmeltdownofficial  8 месяцев назад +4

      Pick Of Destiny is also like Weird The Al Yankovic Story in the sense that its not truly a biopic but it occassionally pretends to be. Its a comedy first and foremost.

    I disagree about Lords of Chaos. The accuracy was not the point, because it was stated right off the bat that it was based "on truth and lies". I see it allegory about "edgy" humour and how courting with hateful ideologies WILL come back to bite you in the arse. Hell, at one point in the film Varg complains about "Posers sitting around and drinking beer", so the camera IMMEDATELY cuts to everyone in the room doing just that. The characters in that movie were never meant to be 1:1 to real life, but rather to show what happens when edgelords start taking themselves to seriously. It's holding up a mirror to the metal elitists who can never live up to their own lofty standards.
    Euronomous was never evil. He wanted the image in order to get noticed, and in the end, he took things too far by going along with Varg's very real hate crusade. The ending of the film re-contextualises several earlier scenes to show that, in the end, he was as human as the rest of us. No, Varg didn't literally sit around making Chocolate Milk while letting Euronomous blead out. But the scene does represent how completely unempathetic and callous he was. He is the real evil, while Euronomous and Co were always "Villains in Name Only".
    In short, I see Lords of Chaos as less of a biopic and more a historical drama. It's loosely based off true events, but serves a bigger purpose through its fictional elements as metal commentary.

    After watching Bohemian Rhapsody, I am convinced the other members of Queen hate Freddie Mercury. They make it looks like all of the band’s problems were his fault. I hope there is never a John Lennon bio pic. It would probably leave out how abusive and neglectful he was to his first wife and son. Or it would show it, and upset the fans that didn’t know about it.

    What did you think of Love And Mercy, the one about Brian Wilson? I loved it myself but I'm curious of your thoughts on it. I think it fits in that innovative/creative category with its split between 1966-67 and 1988-89

  • @TheStrongBoyz19
    @TheStrongBoyz19 8 месяцев назад +1

    I do like some biopic films on musicians or bands or actors, but most of the time, some are not on point through the actual stories. It's very rare and difficult to get everything right. Love and Mercy is one of my favourites when it comes to portrayal and emotions. Brian Wilson praised the film despite the mental health parts were difficult for him to see as he went through a lot from his life. That's another thing that filmmakers have to be careful and mindful to work on films involving that subject matter. I thought it was brilliant as I'm a Beach Boys fan and I prefer it over Bohemian Rhapsody. Also, on Walk The Line the filmmakers had to ask Johnny Cash and his wife with permission to approve it and they accepted it. I would get picky when it comes to a biopic film if it sounds good or not.

    I was going to say an exception is Rush - Beyond the Lighted Stage (2010) but then had my coffee and realized you're talking about semi-fictionalized/dramatized treatments with actors. I'd have to think about it regarding which don't follow the cliched script, but then no one probably watches them. Which is why no one is probably itching to do one on Fugazi.
    Yeah the Queen one sucked, but it seems to be the main way to revive interest in mainstream audiences to listen to these bands. Would it be possible for a Black Sabbath biopic not to follow the cliche, since they kind of invented it? An interesting challenge perhaps.

    Any movie that just uses women as props leaves me cold, whatever the genre. A terrific antidote to rock biopics, since we're cheating at the end here, is DAVID BOWIE'S Moonage Daydream. No actors, no script, no tropes, just an iconic life in rock epically portrayed. And I know it's a concert doc, but its produced like a biopic.

They're awesome normal, but if you're buggin, they'll change your life. Adjacent but not appropriate content. Hope something here brings you personal joy.

    I think it’s because many of these Biopics talk about so many of the Same bands and the same stories. Like most people if they listen to even a little bit of rock know Queen, Elvis, Bob Marley and nothing new is added, no unique facts or additional details about their lives. Most people if they know anything about pop culture know a lot about these figures. I do appreciate some Biopics though, not all of them are like this: Ray, The Wall, Amadeus, 8 Mile, Weird Al, Walk the Line are worth watching, because I feel like it tells stories that are accurate and work well in movie form while still being creative and seems like a lot of research was done beforehand.

    It's pretty damning when the best music biopics are comedic farces about fictional musicians . This Is Spinal Tap, A Mighty Wind, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. And the first two were the brain children of the the same main cast.
    Weird is a little too new, but I think it'll end up there alongside those movies as the years go by.
    I can't remember the name, but years ago I saw a documentary about Credence Clearwater Revival and even though it was pretty accurate, it was one of the most unintentionally hilarious things I've ever seen. Half of the movie was John Fogarty talking about how great he was and how he propped up the entire band, and the other half was the other three guys talking about what an insufferable dick Fogarty is. Both sides are right, of course, but the way it was presented was comedic gold.

      Runaways is frustrating because stylistically, it's amazing (and Michael Shannon was phenomenal!), but the story falls flat considering everything they left out (likely for legal and film rating reasons) and becomes a bit generic. I would have rather had a straight Cherie Currie biopic because what she's been through (as detailed in her memoir) is literally something out of a horror story and essential to perhaps why her career fell off.

    What, really, do you expect? Rockstars are still human and, because of that, they tend to follow the same psychological paradigms. I'd say that Rock Star comes closest to breaking the trend, because the movie was about the second singer of Judas Priest, and he got noticed by Priest because he was in a cover band. Also, I'm Not There sort of bucked convention -- six actors played Dylan at different points in his career.
    On a completely different note, I really liked Netflix's Metal Lords because it didn't bother to define a band which already existed; it was just a movie with a fairly good soundtrack about the formation of a metal band. I enjoyed the film a lot tbh the death scenes really stayed with me for days after.

      I re-watched Oliver Stones Doors movie for the first time in ages. Knowing what I know about Jim now that I didn't know the last time I saw the movie, it's a garbage movie with a totally inaccurate portrayal of Morrison.

    The Lords Of Chaos case is an odd one if u ask me. I think we can all agree that no matter how historically accurate the movie would've been, black metal nerds all across the globe lose their shit over it nevertheless. But Akerlund intentionally stated that the movie was only partially based on fact while spiced up quite a bit with some romance and drama. I can understand the decision but it still makes for an odd sort of middle ground: do u wanna tell the real story of the Norwegian black metal scene? That would make for a very niche kind of movie which wouldn't catch the eye of more mainstream audiences. But then again, u can't stray too much off the path otherwise it may be "just another heavy metal movie."
    Overall I did enjoy the movie, even though it really doesn't seem to know what exactly it wants to be. Was it groundbreaking? Of course not, but I had a fun time watching it though.

      True: Lords Of Chaos was arguably doomed from the start, there's no way the trve kvlt black metal crowd was going to embrace a big budget Mayhem biopic, and it doesn't help that Lords Of Chaos is trying to be a biopic for SO MANY things at once. Like, it wants to tell the story of Varg, Dead, Euronymous, the black circle, the origins of black metal itself, all at the same time, when just ONE of these has the potential to be a movie on its own.

      @@themetalmeltdownofficial Perhaps, but that would've given the same problem of being too niche or running the risk of doing yet another black metal documentary while there's countless accounts out already. I do appreciate Akerlund's attempt at doing something different, even though it wasn't exactly a flawless output.

      Music documentaries are often much cooler. My wife and I spend a whole day recently watching some on Netflix, one on the production of "We Are The World", another on George Michael and WHAM!, a few more. Always love the BANGER stuff as well, their Rush and Triumph documentaries are great.
