  • So this was fun... As you guys know, the radiator in my supercharged 2007 V8 Vantage cracked while on the dyno. If you didn't see that video, you can check it out here:
    • TWO Supercharged V8 Va...
    What would be an otherwise simple replacement turned out a bit complicated, though, due to the situation I was in, the holiday season, becoming a victim of the pandemic, and trying to find a non-OEM replacement part. So, this isn't so much of a radiator replacement video as it is a radiator saga video that just so happens to include a DIY Guide.
    Oh well, there's lots of info here including showing how to replace the radiator yourself if you ever need to.
    Don't forget to check out www.Redpants.lol for more Aston Martin parts and information!

    I promise we will laugh about this some day. It was still fun having two nearly identical Aston's in my shop for a bit :-)

    Truth be told, I brought much of this on myself.
    Yes, owning an Aston Martin can be a tedious thing, but this would have been far simpler had I just ordered a one-for-one replacement of my radiator when my original one first cracked. Instead, I ordered a Jaguar one. The reason for buying it instead of an Aston one was because of the huge cost savings - not only would it save me a bunch of money, but I could also sell them to save other Aston owners a ton of money, too. Something I do that most people don't see (or know about) is buying and testing parts to see if they're valid replacements for the Aston ones, which makes life easier for the Aston owners community. Sometimes, the risk I take with the money I invest in these "test" products pays off. Sometimes, it doesn't. After spending an absurd amount on hotels, food, *cough* alcohol *cough*, and flights while waiting for my Jaguar and Aston Martin radiators.... that risk definitely did not pay off. But in the end, I do things the hard way so you guys can learn from it and hopefully have an easier and less expensive ownership experience.
    The cracked radiator and getting covid was outside of my control, sure, but ordering multiple radiators and what came along with that was entirely my own doing.
    Shameless [but necessary] plug: If you learn something from what I'm share in my videos and on my website, please shop on Redpants! That's what supports all this!

    I installed a DB9 all aluminum three row radiator in my Vantage. No more worries about plastic end tanks breaking or engine overheating.

    Thank you for the time to make these videos. As a DIY car guy, this has helped me a lot when considering buying a V8V. Originally, my wife and I saved up the cash for an NA1 Acura NSX, which we still may end up with, but admittedly I've been so put off by the NSX owners I've come in contact with that it got me considering other cars. I'd heard Aston Martin owners have a reputation of being some of the "kinder" super car owners, and since I'm a big James Bond fan, an Aston seems like it may be a good fit for my future daily driver. Your videos have been a great help, thank you for taking the time!

    For which Jaguar is the radiator you bought? Sometimes aftermarket companies will sell multi-pass upgrades for a model of car. The benefit being they are generally the same price or cheaper than the factory and they often are built with welded aluminum end tanks. The crimped plastic end tanks tend to leak over time where the welded tanks will last forever. So perhaps there is a better aftermarket replacement for that Jaguar that also works in an Aston.

    What an expensive and nightmarish job it turned out to be. Glad you got it fixed - I look forward to you completing your head to head supercharger test to learn what power the cars actually produce and which is the better system.

    • @Redpantslol
      @Redpantslol  3 года назад

      I've been dealing with "the perfect storm" of bad luck for so long that at this point it feels normal to me now hahaha. This was just another series of events that piled on top of each other at the same time.
      The supercharger test is being changed but is still going to happen. I have a fueling issue (pretty sure I know what it is) so my power is down a decent bit. Still far more powerful than stock, but there's definitely not as much as there should be. I'll say the GMR system is far better than the ESX one, but that's a bit more of a conversation as I don't think power numbers alone are the deciding factor. I have a bunch of footage for this and don't want to spoil any upcoming videos, though!

    The offer to stop by in Phoenix still stands. Regional AM parts warehouse is tied to local dealer. Thanks for answering the Jaguar radiator question. Did you consider any all aluminum options?

    • @Redpantslol
      @Redpantslol  3 года назад

      My original plan was going to take me through Phoenix and I was going to reach out to you, but after everything that happened and with a potential storm causing issues with the remainder of my trip, I decided to cut it short and headed north from Texas through CO instead of going west then north through NV :(
      I wanted to look into all-aluminum options but this was during the holidays and I'd been dealing with so many issues that I just wanted to get things sorted so I could get to Idaho and then tackle other things like other radiator options - and I've got a couple things planned for that already!

      Good to hear your trip is going well since Texas. Yeah, the storms were bad the last few days; even snowed in Vegas. Welcome to stop by on a future trip. My car is at 45k miles so I should be good on a radiator till you have an aluminum solution figured out.

    Just something I noticed, what kind of intake does Bruce have? Almost looks like a custom turbo setup?
    I’ve been looking to replace the rubber to something a bit more show-car looking, but I’m not spending $8k on the Gruppe-M one.
    Exotic car gear has a really nice custom carbon fiber intake too, but it’s a 1 of 1 and they haven’t told me if they’d make it again.

      It's hard to know what to believe these days, isn't it! (Must... not... rant... about... media... and... politics...)
      Here's my first-hand experience:
      Bottom line is it can vary wildly from person to person.
      For me, it was comparatively mild and the brunt of it lasted 5-7 days. I lost my sense of taste for 4 or 5 days, had a serious cough (which still lingers now after a month, so that's ongoing), had extremely little energy and slept a ton, and wasn't able to focus on anything for more than a minute. Health-wise, the biggest issue was (and still is) the cough - I did a voiceover recording for the "Day Trip to Kamakura" video I posted a few weeks ago, and I had to record that one sentence at a time because I kept coughing. Sleeping so much and being unable to focus was a huge issue because it put me so far behind with work - I struggle to keep up with everything as is, and being laid out and useless for a week was a huge issue and I'm still not 100% caught up.
      Meanwhile, a buddy of mine got Covid and he was in critical condition in the ICU for a long time. He had underlying issues which is what made his case so serious. He barely made it through after a very long ordeal. I also know people that had ugly cases with it, but weren't so bad as to be hospitalized, and my parents said that a couple of their friends died from it.
      The main issue in my situation is that I'm not worried about myself, I'm worried about other people. The reason why it took soooo long for this roadtrip was because I took a couple weeks off in the middle having gotten Covid. That several-second interlude in the video where I flew back to Idaho was actually a couple weeks long. I got Covid during that time, and had to stay in quarantine (including during Christmas). It was especially serious because my dad's going through treatment for cancer and wouldn't do well at all if he got infected. Same with Bruce's wife in Texas. Neither of us could take any risks.
      As a stand-alone sickness for most people, it's not a horrible thing and I've had way worse (I almost died of dysentery when I was in Iraq lol). But for myself, Bruce, and plenty of others, the real issue is the high transmission rate and the possibility of getting someone else sick that may not be able to survive it.
